10 PLACES TO VISIT IN ARAD
Ghidul orașului Arad. Arad City Guide.
I suppose that everyone who is a consumer of Romanian Hub content and studies the Romanian language would eventually like to go to Romania. While I live abroad in Thailand, I do go back home occasionally so I have a good archive of photos and videos which I want to share with you in this new series called Romanian Travel Guides.
Here are 10 places you should visit next time you’re in Arad.
1.
Palatul administrativ
The Administrative Palace
Built between 1872 and 1876, Palatul administrativ has a U-shaped building with a central clock tower that is 54 m heigh. Its overall architecture combines characteristics of new-Renaissance with the style of late medieval town halls.
2.
Malul Mureșului
Mureș River Bank
The northern bank of Mureș River, the second longest river in Romania, is flanked by kilometers long parks where you can jog, cycle, or just go for a walk. It can be easily reached from almost anywhere downtown.
3.
Podul pietonal peste Mureș
Pedestrian Bridge over Mureș
You can cross Mureș River on a fairly new pedestrian bridge and enter Ștrandul Neptun, an open air public swimming pool. During the off-season, when the pool is closed, you can still cross the river and chill out at one of the restaurants on the river bank.
4.
Catedrala Nașterea Sfântului Ioan Botezătorul
Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Catedral
This Ortodox cathedral was built between 1862 and 1865 and it is a beautiful example of classical neo-Baroque style of architecture.
5.
Teatrul Clasic Ioan Slavici
Ioan Slavici Classic Theatre
The theatre is centrally located in the axis of the city’s main boulevard and has a seating capacity of 1,250. The theatre was damaged by fire twice, in 1883 and 1957, but its Neo-Classical architectural style has been preserved.
6.
Monumentul Ostașului Român
The Romanian Soldier Monument
This monument is located behind Teatrul Clasic Ioan Slavici in Piața Avram Inacu, one of the largest public squares in the city. It was build to honor the Romanian soldiers who gave their life to free Romanian from fascist occupation.
7.
Catedrala Sfânta Treime
Holy Trinity Cathedral
This cathedral is a fairly new addition to the cityscape of Arad as it was inaugurated only in 2008. It has four domes and four golden crosses are mounted on each one of the domes. It’a a massive structure facing the city’s major roundabout.
8.
Lacul de la Pădurice
Little Forest Lake
Next to Catedrala Sfânta Treime there’s a quiet little artificial lake which takes its name after an adjoining park full of trees. During the winter, the lake transforms in an outdoor ice-skating rink while in milder weather it gives a nice reflection of the surrounding architecture.
9.
Consiliul Județean Arad
Arad City Council
The glass building of Arad City Council might not have a classical look like most of the architecture downtown Arad, but it’s modern look makes for a good photo opportunity.
10.
Cartierul Podgoria
Podgoria Neighborhood
Cartierul Podgoria is small and quaint neighborhood located right in the center of the city. Its alleys, brick four-story apartment buildings, and green areas make it as the perfect location for a walkabout in your city exploration.
If you’re coming to Romania from Hungary, then Arad must be your first stopover. Or else, make sure you spend one or two days in this great hometown of mine.

Arad is the capital city of Arad County, in western Romania, in the historical region of Crişana, on the river Mureş.
An important industrial center and transportation hub, Arad is also the seat of a Romanian Orthodox archbishop and features two universities, a Romanian Orthodox theological seminary, a training school for teachers, and a music conservatory. The city has a population of approximately 168,000, making it the fourteenth largest city in Romania. Arad is the third largest city in the western part of the country following nearby Timişoara and Oradea.
Arad was first mentioned in documents in the 11th century. The Mongol invasion of the Kingdom of Hungary in 1241 showed the importance of the fortifications on this place, to which were added in the second half of the 13th century more stone fortresses at Soimos (Solymos), Şiria (Világos), and Dezna (Dézna). The Ottoman Empire conquered the region from Hungary in 1551 and kept it until the Peace of Karlowitz of 1699. Arad or Varad became an eyalet center, which comprised the sanjaks of Varad (Arad), Logoş, Kacaş, Beşlek and Yanova from 1660 till 1697, when it was captured by Austrians during Ottoman-Habsburg wars (1683--1699). After 1699, the city was ruled by the Habsburg Monarchy. According to 1720 data, the population of the city was composed of 177 Romanian families, 162 Serbian, and 35 Hungarian.[2]
The new fortress was built between 1763 and 1783. Although it was small, it proved formidable having played a great role in the Hungarian struggle for independence in 1849. The city possesses a museum containing relics of this war of independence.
Bravely defended by the Austrian general Berger until the end of July 1849, it was captured by the Hungarian rebels, who made it their headquarters during the latter part of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It was from Arad that Lajos Kossuth issued his famous proclamation (11 August 1849), and where he handed over the supreme military and civil power to Artúr Görgey.
The fortress was recaptured shortly after the surrender at Világos (now Şiria, Romania), with the surrender of Görgey to the Russians. It became an ammunition depot.
Thirteen rebel generals were executed there on 6 October 1849, by order of the Austrian general Julius Jacob von Haynau. These men are known collectively as the 13 Martyrs of Arad, and since then Arad is considered the Hungarian Golgotha. One of the public squares contains a martyrs' monument, erected in their memory. It consists of a colossal figure of Hungary, with four allegorical groups, and medallions of the executed generals.
Arad enjoyed a great economic development. In 1834 it was declared a free royal town by Emperor Francis I of Austria.
Aradu Nou / Újarad (New Arad), situated on the opposite bank of the Mureş/Maros, is a suburb of Arad, to which it is connected by a bridge. It was founded during the Turkish wars of the 17th century. The works erected by the Turks for the capture of the fortress of Arad formed the nucleus of the new settlement.
In 1910, the town had 63,166 inhabitants: 46,085 (73%) Hungarians, 10,279 (16.2%) Romanians, 4,365 (7%) Germans.[3]

After years consulting business people on the way they should develop their companies in Romania, I have put some of the basic information together in a short serial of 7 videos intending to provide first answers. Also, with the intention of promoting the role of business consultancy before, during and after the implementation of the new company; many companies could have avoided major problems if they had relied in professional advice from the beginning, instead of calling for it when it was too late.
