കേരളത്തിലെ ഒരേ ഒരു മുസ്ലിം രാജവംശമായ അറക്കൽ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരമാണ് അറക്കൽ കൊട്ടാരം. ഈ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെ (അറക്കൽകെട്ട് എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു) ദർബാർ ഹാൾ പിന്നീട് കേരള ഗവർമെന്റ് ഒരു മ്യൂസിയം ആയി സംരക്ഷിച്ചു. ഈ മ്യൂസിയം അറയ്ക്കൽ മ്യൂസിയം എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. 90 ലക്ഷം രൂപ മുടക്കി നവീകരിച്ചതിനുശേഷം ജൂലൈ 2005-ന് ആണ് ഈ മ്യൂസിയം പൊതുജനങ്ങൾക്കായി തുറന്ന് കൊടുത്തത്.
ഗവേർമ്മെന്റ് പുനരുദ്ധാരണം നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും ഇപ്പോഴും അറയ്ക്കൽകെട്ടിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥാവകാശം അറയ്ക്കൽ രാജവംശത്തിന്റേതാണ്. രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പുരാവസ്തുഗവേഷണവിഭാഗത്തിനും ഇതിൽ അവകാശമില്ല. ഈ കൊട്ടാരം സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നവരിൽ നിന്നും ചെറിയ ഒരു തുക നടത്തിപ്പിലേയ്ക്കായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു വരുന്നു.
മലബാറിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ സുപ്രധാനമായ പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുള്ളതാണ് ഈ കൊട്ടാരം.
കണ്ണൂർ നഗരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് 2-3 കിലോമീറ്റർ മാറി അയിക്കര എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് ഈ മ്യൂസിയം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്.
Arakkal Kettu was the residence of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas, the only Muslim royal family of Kerala. Protected by the Archaeological and Tourism Department, this palace complex is today a museum, Arakkal Kettu Museum, housing a splendid display of numerous artefacts and heirlooms belonging to the Rajas.

Although renovated by the government, the Arakkalkettu is still owned by the Arakkal Royal Trust and does not fall under the control of the country's archaeology department, the Archaeological Survey of India. The government had taken a keen interest in preserving the heritage of the Arakkal Family, which had played a prominent role in the history of Malabar. A nominal entry fee is charged by the Arakkal Royal Trust from visitors to the museum.

കേരളത്തിലെ ഏക മുസ്ലിം രാജവംശമായ അറക്കൽ രാജവംശത്തിന്റെ കൊട്ടാരമായ അറക്കൽ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെ(അറക്കൽ കെട്ട്, അറക്കൽ കോട്ട എന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നു) ദർബാർ ഹാളാണ് പിന്നീട് സർക്കാറിന്റെ കീഴിൽ മ്യൂസിയം ആയി ഏർപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. ഇതാണ് അറക്കൽ മ്യൂസിയം എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. 2005-ൽ സംസ്ഥാന വിനോദ സഞ്ചാരവകുപ്പിന്റെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ പുരാവസ്തു വകുപ്പ് ഏറ്റെടുത്ത് 90 ലക്ഷം രൂപയോളം മുടക്കി പുനരുദ്ധാരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും നവീകരണ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും നടത്തി .
ഭാഗികമായി സർക്കാർ പുനരുദ്ധാരണം നടത്തിയെങ്കിലും അറക്കൽ കൊട്ടാരത്തിന്റെപൂർണ്ണാവകാശം അറക്കൽ രാജവംശത്തിന്തന്നെയാണ്. മലബാറിന്റെ ചരിത്രത്തിൽ സുപ്രധാനമായ പങ്ക് വഹിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ഈ കൊട്ടാരത്തിൽ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ പുരാവസ്തുഗവേഷണവിഭാഗത്തിനും ഇതിൽ അവകാശമില്ല. ഈ കൊട്ടാരം സന്ദർശിക്കുന്നവരിൽ നിന്നും ചെറിയ ഒരു തുക നടത്തിപ്പിലേയ്ക്കായി സ്വീകരിച്ചു വരുന്നു. കേരളത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ വിദേശികൾ സന്ദർശിക്കുന്ന മ്യൂസിയം കൂടിയാണ് അറക്കൽ മ്യൂസിയം.
അറക്കൽ രാജകുടുംബാംഗങ്ങൾ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിരുന്ന പൈതൃക വസ്തുക്കളാണ് ഇവിടെ മതിയായ സൗകര്യത്തോടെ സംരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ളത്. ഹൈദർ അലി, ടിപ്പു സുൽത്താൻ, ബീജാപൂർ സുൽത്താൻ, ഡച്ചുകാർ, ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർ തുടങ്ങിയ നിരവധി ഭരണകൂടങ്ങളോട് നടത്തിയ കത്തുകൾ, പഴയ ഖുർആൻ, ഖുർആൻ കയ്യെഴുത്തുപ്രതികൾ, വൈവിധ്യമാർന്ന പത്തായങ്ങളും ഫർണീച്ചറുകളും, ആദ്യ കാല ടെലഫോൺ ഉൾപ്പെടെയുള്ള ഉപകരണങ്ങൾ, വാളുകളും വിവിധ യുദ്ധോപകരണങ്ങളും, സ്പടികത്തിലും ലോഹങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുമുള്ള പാത്രങ്ങൾ തുടങ്ങിയ ഒട്ടനവധി പൈതൃക സ്വത്തുക്കൾ ഇവിടെ സംരക്ഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്.

dhanyam creations , anjarakandy. The Royal Arrakkal Family, who ruled parts of Kerala and Lakshadeeps between 16th and 18th century. The elder of the family, irrespective of their gender, was the ruler. Male rulers were known as Ali Raja and female rulers were known as Arrakkal Beevi. .The Arakkal dynasty is believed to have their lineage from a Nair functionary of the Kolathiri Rajas, who later converted to Islam with the name Mammali. A story about Mammali has it that he once saved a girl from the royal family from drowning. Consequently she was declared an outcaste and then, Mammali married her. The King granted her land at Kannur and the palace of Arakkal kettu as dowry.
The Arakkal family were prominent rulers of Kannur and the adjoining areas. They once ruled Malabar and the Lakshadweep Islands as well. One remarkable thing about them was that when it came to ruling and administration, there was no gender difference. They followed a matriarchal system of descent and admitted both male and female members as head of the family and of the state. While the male rulers were called Ali Rajas, the female rulers were known as Arakkal Beevis.
