A 36 feet long humpback whale has been found dead in the Amazon

The ten-tonne marine mammal (pictured) was discovered in the middle of the undergrowth on the island of Marajo off the Araruna Beach, Brazil, at the mouth of the Amazon River. Scientists believe the creature died at sea and may have landed in the wooded area after rough seas and high tides threw it inland, far from the ocean. A team from Semma went to the region to inspect the remains (top and bottom right), believed to be a 12-month old calf, and to gather information which could help to explain how the aquatic creature crash landed in the jungle. Video taken at the time shows the mammal splayed out in swampy mangrove surrounded by trees, with no visible signs of injury. Biologists from the Bicho D'agua Institute have been called in to collect forensic samples to determine the cause of death. They believe the massive animal, which measures six feet wide, was already dead when it was carried by huge waves to its unnatural resting place.

When local fishermen were walking through a mangrove forest in Brazil, they came across something that shouldn't be there: the carcass of a humpback whale.
The baby whale was likely lost at sea and died of starvation or some other unknown cause, according to nonprofit research group Bicho D'agua.
The tides washed the whale's body to shore at Araruna Beach in the city of Soure, said Bicho D'agua oceanographer Maura Sousa. It's located on the island of Marajó, which sits at the mouth of the Amazon River.
During this season, the tide normally rises twice a day to almost 4 meters (13 feet) and floods the mangrove forest, bringing lots of trash, including trash from ships from a lot of places in the world, Sousa said.

This explains why an inflated carcass, due to the gases of the decomposition, was dragged into the mangrove forest, she said.

Segundo Dirlene Silva, secretária do Meio Ambiente de Soure, o animal foi localizado entre três e quatro metros da margem da praia. A baleia parou na praia e foi levada pela maré para dentro na mata. Um pescador disse que avistou a baleia na praia na quinta-feira à noite, mas não conseguimos ir até o local por conta da maré alta. Tivemos que esperar até sexta à tarde para conseguir chegar lá. Estamos em um período de muita chuva com a maré influenciada pela lua cheia, disse a secretária. Ontem, uma equipe do instituto Bicho D'Água esteve no local para coletar os primeiros materiais para análise que poderão dizer as causas da morte do mamífero.
