Trying NANAIMO BARS (Canadian Dessert ????????) + The BIGGEST HOCKEY STICK in the World! ????
Join us as we continue our Vancouver Island road trip south to Victoria, BC with highlights including stopping in Nanaimo to try the famous Nanaimo bars (Canadian dessert) along with a stop in Duncan to see the world's biggest hockey stick!
On a wet, rainy and windy morning we left our apartment in Comox with our first stop at Fanny Bay where I got a glimpse of crashing waves slamming against the shore. After more driving we stopped at Arbutus Grove Provincial Park to do a little hike and eat our picnic lunch.
After making it to Nanaimo we had to stop and grab the classic dessert bar from a couple of different places. First we went to Smokin' George's BBQ Restaurant to grab a nanaimo bar with bacon and dulce de leche. We then went into town and went inside Red's Bakery to grab a classic Nanaimo bar and another one with peanut butter.
En route to Victoria we stopped in Duncan to take a photo beside the world's largest hockey stick. This has been in Duncan for quite some time because I remember growing up on Vancouver Island and marvelling at it in my youth. The 205-foot hockey stick was made from Douglas Fir wooden beams reinforced with steel and weighs an astonishing 28,118 kg.
After arriving in Victoria we cooked up a quick dinner and ate the remaining Nanaimo bars. Stay tuned as a we have a sunny day adventure in the capital city of British Columbia to close off our series.

Trying NANAIMO BARS (Canadian Dessert ????????) + The BIGGEST HOCKEY STICK in the World! ????
Come join us for an epic road trip to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada where partner with Trover to cover the island from the south all the way up to the north. Unlike most Vancouver Island road trips and travel series which focus on the triangle of Vancouver, Nanaimo and Tofino, we branch off and visit lesser-known places such as Gold River, Port Alice and Malcolm Island just to name a few.
Our trip to Vancouver Island starts off with a flight from Toronto to Vancouver, followed by the shortest flight of our lives from Vancouver to Victoria. From Victoria, we head to our base of Mount Washington in the central part of the island, where highlights include spotting black bears, hiking in Mount Washington and visiting vineyards in Comox.
Our journey then continues to Gold River, Sam's hometown, where we board the Uchuck III en route to Friendly Cove. We also go to nearby Campbell River where we walk along a beautiful fishing dock, tour a hatchery and come across a black bear, and hike in Elk Falls which was our favourite hike on this entire journey.
Heading to northern Vancouver Island, we base ourselves in Port Alice and visit the nearby towns of Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Telegraph Cove. For separate day trips, we take the ferry to Malcolm Island where we visit the former Finnish Community of Sointula and take another ferry to Alert Bay where we have the opportunity to appreciate First Nations totem poles, artwork and museums.
Our Vancouver Island road trip concludes with visits to Parksville, Nanaimo and Victoria. Overall, it was one of the best road trips we've ever done focusing mostly on nature, outdoor adventure, wildlife spotting and visiting off-the-beaten-path villages and communities that have a lot to offer but aren't that well known.
If you are thinking of doing a Canada road trip, Vancouver Island should be at the top of your list. For more information and tips on all the places we visited on Vancouver Island, you can check out this Trover list:

Neck Point | Vancouver Island, British Columbia
On what turned out to be a very sunny day in Nanaimo, I decided to go for a drive to check out Neck Point Park where I got to experience some very breathtaking views of the mountains and surrounding town. This was a very peaceful day for me as I was really able to relax and come to terms with a few things in my life that have been bothering me. I hope you enjoy the views xo

This is the most accessible waterfall view on the Island- The main waterfall bridge is wheelchair friendly too. A loop trail travels from the upper to lower bridges through a mature forest overlooking the impressive river canyon where the water boils below, before emptying into a quieter emerald green poo just below the lower bridge.
And Coombs Old Country Market and all of the quirky shops and restaurants is just up the road another 10 minutes, along with Little Qualicum Falls and Cathedral Grove-- make a waterfall and ancient forest day of it!

Horne Lake Caves- Amazing Sites at Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park
Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park is located approximately 26 km west of Qualicum and 60 km north of Nanaimo, and is 12 km from the Horne Lake exit off Highway 19. The park's principal function is to protect, manage, and monitor the recreational use of all the caves collectively known as the Horne Lake Caves. It was established in 1971 and is home to more than 1000 caves, and was established due to caving groups that were concerned about the potential damage of the caves and the crystal formations contained within.
