2019土耳其Turkey之旅 Day 4 [ Part 1 ] 以弗所(愛菲索斯)古城 Ephesus Archaeological Museum 5/11/2019
Ephesus Arcadian Way
Ephesus once had a harbour, but it became silted up. The Arcadian Way was the main street during Roman times and led from the harbour, up to the Great Theatre, which seated 25,000 people. St Paul travelled to Ephesus and preached here in the theatre and he was also the subject of an impromptu trial. The Romans were tolerant of diverse religions, but they would not tolerate agitators, and Paul's teachings about Christianity were winning converts from the cult of Artemis and causing a decline in silver votive items for the pagan cult. This was a place bustling with life, the third largest city in Asia Minor, estimated at 33,600 to 56,000 people. You can imagine people walking along the arcadian way; merchants, children, roman dignitaries, people getting on with their daily lives.

Ephesus, Turkey - Dance
After spending the day at Ephesus, I found this outdoor cafe ... ripe with life.
Ephesus is one of the best preserved classical cities of the Eastern Mediterranean. The place where Paul wrote the bibilical letter to the Ephiesians.
It is also thought that the apostle John and Mary, Jesus mother, settled at Ephesus.
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and was built around 550 BC, it was about four times the size of the Parthenon. Ephesus was part of the kingdom of Pergamum which Attalus III bequeathed to Rome in 133 BC. Ephesus was the most important Roman city of proconsular Asia. Situated at the mouth of the Cayster River on a gulf of the Aegean sea, it flourished as an important commercial and export centre for Asia. By NT times it had grown to at least 250,000 people (Mounce). Gradually the harbour silted up and is now some miles from the sea. In modern day Turkey Ephesus is known as Efes. The Selçuk-Ephesus Museum is a must visit, many of the photos of statues are from the museum.

Ephesus, Turkey
After touring the reconstructed ruins of ancient Ephesus, Turkey, we saw this brief performance with Cleopatra, Mark Antony, some dancers, and a couple of gladiators. For some reason, they let the guy live at the end. Probably union rules or something.
