Provincial Cities of Australia: Ballarat (1931)
This silent documentary from Efftee Film Productions about Ballarat was produced in 1931.
It opens with with the Victory Arch spanning the Avenue of Honour, a memorial to men who fought in the First World War. We see Sturt Street and trams, the statue of Eureka Rebellion leader Peter Lalor and the obelisk commemorating the Eureka Stockade. It was shot at the start of the Great Depression and includes images of desperate unemployed men scratching for gold in Ballarat’s gutters and creeks around the town.
We also see the elaborate stucco exterior of the 'Old Curiosity Shop’, created by James and Caroline Harwick in the late 1800s, the Ballarat Botanic Gardens and the statue 'Flight from Pompeii' by the sculptor Benzoni. At nearby Lake Wendouree people are shown sailing and rowing, riding on tourist boats, fishing and enjoying the foreshores of the lake.

Ballarat in 1995, skate park civic hall, swimming in Creswick Australia
25 years ago we had a video camera, footage from Delacombe driving towards Wiltshire Lane, notice it is all just paddocks, now it is an estate. Driving down avenue of honor it is single lane under the arch of victory. At Skate park at Civic Hall, which is now gone. Swimming out at Creswick at blue waters as it was called. Some random bloke turned up and jumped off the cliff into the water. We never did the cliff jump instead preferring the tree. There were no mobile phones in this day, this was all recorded onto VHS tape
Ballarat War Heroes - My Home Town.
Some time ago, I went back to my home town of Ballarat and shot images to go with my song 'Can You Hear Australia's Heroes Marching?', which you can see on this video. I was born and raised in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, and spent my first 18 years there. I would say, there is little doubt that the great monuments dedicated to the service of those that went to war, left an impression on me when I was growing up, like the the Arch of Victory and the Avenue of Honour. My schooling also taught me about our ANZAC tradition and Simpson and his donkey. These are great examples of courage, sacrifice and mateship, which we should always hand down to future generations. - comment by Peter Barnes.
The Ballarat Avenue of Honour is the longest avenue of honour in Australia and, composed of trees planted along a road. 3,771 trees were planted in order of the soldiers enlistment in WW1, and stretch some 22km along the Ballarat Burrumbeet Road.
Battle Of Fromelles 100th anniversary 19th July 2016. The author of the song's Great Grandmother's brother died at Fromelles.

Before his death, he was wounded in action in Belgium on the 30th September 1917. He recovered to rejoin the 8th Battallion in November 1917.
His older brother Cedric Charles Newey also served in WW1 – Gallipoli 25th April 1915 to 9th September 1915 with the 2nd Field Ambulance and then on the Western Front with the 14th Field Ambulance. He joined up in August 1914. He sustained gas burns in June 1918. He survived WW1 to return home to Australia.
My Grandfather, James Stewart Hogg served on the Western Front and was wounded. He also enlisted in WW2. My father, James Stanley Hogg enlisted in the RAAF in WW2 (I was born out of wedlock and retained my mother’s maiden name). He was 18 years old when he enlisted in 1944. Australian WW1 casualty rate of 64.93% was the highest of all the allied forces.
The song is timeless and honours the memory of those who have died in the service and defence of Australia in war.
The marching theme of the song is especially powerful and supports the spirit of ANZAC Day.
The song does not glorify war or endorse conflict of any kind. The song simply highlights the sacrifice of many Australians who died in the service and defence of our country in war.
Over 100,000 Australians have lost their lives in the service and defence of our country. Along with their mates, they're marching once again, in the towns and cities, across our great land.
Schools and students frequently ask to use this song in projects and commemorative ceremonies.
Radio stations throughout Australia have broadcast the song leading up to ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The song is also requested to be played at funerals (for veterans).
The song has been used for commemorative purposes across Australia by schools, churches, choirs, bands, councils, retirement homes and RSL branches.

Gold rush in Sovereign Hill still on...
Avenues of Honour
This clip is a tribute to the ANZACs- the Australian and New Zealand Soldiers who fought in the First World War, particularly the Western Front. The ANZACs were the last to return home after the war, because shipping after the war was scarce, and priority was given to the wounded and married men. Accordingly it was sometimes two years or more before some ANZACs made it back to their native lands. While they waited they engaged with the people of France and Belgium and helped rebuild their communities all but destroyed by the Germans. The poppy is a universal symbol of the war in both countries. In Australia, the Anzacs are uniquely remembered by the so called Avenues of Honour where communities planted trees along their streets to remember their fallen. In France the poppyfields have become a focus for the French to remember the ANZACs who fought so bravely to save their country. That bravery is remembered forever when the wild poppies bloom in French fields. This song, The Avenues of Honour also known as As long as poppies dance in Fields of France is the work of Jim Brown and Vince Brophy, and pays tribute to those who served the countries they loved- Australia and France.
