A Walk through Ierapetra, the southeast City in Crete
Ierapetra in ancient times was one of the most important cities of Crete. It originally brought the name Kyrva, then Pytna, Kamiros and then Ierapytna.
During the Hellenistic period (4th-1st century BC), the city minted its own coins and had under control more land than any other Cretan city until the 2nd century BC.
In 66 BC was conquered and destroyed by Romans, but was reconstructed gaining back its former glory. It contained two theaters, an amphitheater, temples, aqueduct and numerous statues that adorned the city. During Byzantine period it was Episcopal headquarter that contained Sitia and Merabello area except Ierapetra. The Arab raid in 824 BC caused widespread destruction to the city marking the definitive end.
Very interesting facts of Ierapetra’s historic route though time can be figured out visiting its great archaeological collection that is housed in the Ottoman school.

Crete | Ierapetra Town
Crete | Ierapetra Town. Ierapetra is a sleepy town on the rocky southern coast of Crete, the only town of any consequence facing the Libyan Sea. For that reason it has more of a southern, sun-baked feel than of the big towns of the north coast of Crete.
The city name is derived from the archaeological site east of the town. The place was a centre of Minoan civilization in the long-ago centuries when Crete traded with Egypt.
In later centuries, when Crete came under Venetian control, the city got its Venetian castle, just like many other centres of Crete.
The city gets its fair share of tourists, and also has a market garden centre, where farmers from the adjacent valleys come to sell their produce.
It is noted this area is known for its massive greenhouse production supplying most of Greece and parts of Europe with products.
For a better beach, a half an hour's drive or bus ride away, you get to Makryialos Bay, one of Crete's best-kept secrets, so we'll save that for another time.

Αρχαία πόλη Λατώ - Ancient city of Lato, Crete in 4K (Ultra HD)
The ruins of ancient Lato are located approximately 3km north of Kritsa, scattered between two hills at an altitude of 380m. This site has stunning views over the bay of Mirabello.
The name Lato is taken after the Dorian pronunciation of the goddess Leto, who probably was worshiped here. However, the patron of the city was the goddess of childbirth, Eileithyia, who is depicted on the coins of Lato.
The town existed in the Minoan period, but actually flourished after the Dorian invasion. It as inhabited till the Roman era, when it started to decline. Lato was one of the strongest cities in Crete, as evidenced by the agreements (inscriptions have survived) with other towns. The port of Lato was on the site of today’s Agios Nikolaos and was named Kamara.

Ierapetra, Crete

Agios Nikolaos (HD)
Agios Nikolaos, Lassithi, Crete, Kreta, Greece.
Agios Nikolaos of Agios Nikolaos Lasithiou (Grieks: Άγιος Νικόλαος, vertaald: Sint-Niklaas of Άγιος Νικόλαος Λασιθίου) is sedert 2011 een fusiegemeente (dimos) in de Griekse bestuurlijke regio (perifereia) Kreta.
Neapoli of Neapoli Lasithiou (Νεάπολη of Νεάπολη Λασιθίου)
Vrachasi (Βραχάσι)
Agios Nikolaos (or Aghios Nikolaos, Greek: Άγιος Νικόλαος) is a coastal town on the Greek island of Crete, lying east of the island's capital Heraklion, north of the town of Ierapetra and west of the town of Sitia. In the year 2000, the Municipality of Agios Nikolaos, which takes in part of the surrounding villages, claimed around 19,000 inhabitants. The town is a municipality of Crete region, and sits partially upon the ruins of the ancient city of Lato pros Kamara.
Agios Nikolaos was settled in the late Bronze Age by Dorian occupants of Lato, at a time when the security of the Lato hillfort became a lesser concern and access to the harbour at Agios Nikolaos became sufficiently attractive.[1]
The name Agios Nikolaos means Saint Nicholas, and its stress lies on the second syllable of the word Nikolaos. Agios Nikolaos or Ayios Nikolaos (alternative transliterations of the Greek Άγιος Νικόλαος) is observably a common placename in Greece and Cyprus, since Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors and of all of Greece.
Agios Nikolaos is probably best known as a tourist town that serves as a hub to the twenty or so small villages and farms that make up that part of Lassithi. Tourist attractions include the small lagoon Lake Voulismeni, small beaches in the town, the tiny island Agioi Pantes, the archaeological museum, the local flora exhibition Iris and numerous fairs. Tourism is mainly West European with Greek tourism concentrating in mid August. The lagoon features a small park with a trail, traditional fishing boats, ducks, pigeons, an amphitheatre and many cafès.
Agios Nikolaos is accessible from the mainland and the whole of Europe through Nikos Kazantzakis airport, and the many daily ferry services in Heraklion (64km). You can also travel through Sitia airport boarding onto a domestic or charter flight or through it's harbour (67 km). Recently the town became host to a department of a Technological Educational Institute (TEI), offering tourism-related courses.

Crete Tour: ZARGIANAKIS RAKI DISTILLERY, MUSEUM OF GORTYN & ZAROS LAKE TOUR
ZARGIANAKIS RAKI DISTILLERY, MUSEUM OF GORTYN & ZAROS LAKE TOUR
ZARGIANAKIS RAKI DISTILLERY (1 1/2 HOURS)
When you visit Zargianakis raki distillery you will have the chance to experience the traditional cretan culture which remains true to date, to learn the best way of raki distillation and buy homemade traditional cretan products made by Zargianaki family.
In Crete raki or tsikoudia, the transparent full of aromas drink of cretan land, is the tool of cretan communication. Production of raki is happening every autumn after the crop of grapes. The custom of raki distillers legislated by Eleutherios Venizelos at 1920. In raki distiller the raw material used is the tsikouda, the remains of the grape pressing to eject the must. When the pot begins to boil then begins to flow in the first body of the distillate, the protorako its name, that it is very strong as an alcohol. While distilling raki continues to get the right proportions and degrees.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL COLLECTION OF GORTYN (1 1/2 HOURS)
The ruins of the ancient city of Gortys with its acropolis and necropolis extend in an area of about 1.000 acres, from the hills Ai-Giannis, Volakas and Prophitis Ilias in the north to the villages Agioi Deka and Metropolis in the south.
This is a small museum located at the archaeological site of Gortyn, which was the most important city of the Roman years in Crete.
The museum hosts finds from the archaeological site that are considered of a rather secondary importance, since the majority of the finds, including the most significant among them, are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion. However, it is well worth visiting, along with the archaeological site of Gortyn. These two combined, give one the impression of a visit to a large open-air museum.
ZAROS LAKE (1 HOUR)
The artificial lake of Zaros or Votomos located on the southern slopes of Psiloritis, just 1km north of Zaros and 45km southwest of Iraklion. The area was a small wetland before 1987, which was shaped in the crater of Votomos spring. It took its current form in 1987, when the Forest Service created an artificial lake where the spring water is stored.
The water comes from the 3 springs of “Mati”, some of the many springs of the region. “Zaros” in Greek means a place with a lot of water.
Around the lake there are several restaurants and cafes, where visitors can relax and taste trout and salmon, which are bred in tanks near the lake. The lake is also surrounded by a playground, several benches and tables, where you can picnic. A stroll around the lake is very short.
Finally, the lake is the starting point of the path that leads, through the gorge of St. Nicholas, to the majestic holly-tree forest of Rouvas, 5km northern.

Pellana Ancient Tholos Tombs 2000
The following video depicts my family's visit to Greece in 2000. We visited the Laconia or Lacedaemonia Region of Peloponnese where my father Dimitrios Varoutsos has his city home in Sparti and his horio-home in Pellana.
It was here that a family friend and fellow Pellanioti, Stavros Maheras took my father, stepmother, my wife, myself and my then 5 month old son, John Dimitri on what would amount to a fascinating, unfettered tour of the Ancient Tholos Tombs of Pellana. The tombs are carved from stone, with domed rooftops, in a bee hive shape and are generally found in hillsides.
We experienced, up close, a piece of history possibly dating as far back as 1350 B.C. to the Early Mycenaean period. We toured the largest tholos tomb ever unearthed (discovered in 1983) which has a diameter of over 10 meters, which leads many scholars to believe that this can only mean that the tomb was that of royalty.
Prior to this discovery, the largest tholos tomb ever unearthed measured in at just over 8 meters in diameter. Some scholars believe, and hope, that further archaeological excavations may one day reveal the royal palaces of King Menelaos and his wife Helen of Troy of Homeric legend in both The Iliad and The Odyssey.
This was a truly memorable experience that I would like to share with you.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO NOTE: Though we had this unfettered access to this archaeological site, and later that same day to the Mycenaean cemetery site located atop the Paleokastro, we were respectful in both the archaeological AND humanistic sense and appreciative for having the opportunity to witness sights that perhaps had not been seen by human eyes for thousands of years.
