Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Archaeological Ensemble of Baelo Claudia
Since the 7th century AD, the Bolonia cove had remained almost deserted. Nonetheless, between 1700 and 1900, there was some news from scholars and travellers who pointed out the presence of Roman ruins, which were identified with Baelo Claudia from very early on. Nonetheless, it is from 1917 that archaeological research was fully developed in the city with the four campaigns that the French Hispanicist Pierre Paris carried out. Paris excavated a large part of the basic structure of the city, while George Bonsor did the same in the Eastern necropolis.
It was not until 1966, when thanks to the geophysical surveys directed by professor Pellicer, the importance of the city was established. In the same year, the Casa de Velázquez, a French Institution of Hispanic studies, began some systematic archaeological research which continues to date and which has led to one of the most complete archaeological sites in the peninsula from the Roman period.
Finally, in 1990, the Junta de Andalucía set up the Archaeological Ensemble of Baelo Claudia, which, since this date, has been in charge of permanently ensuring its preservation, diffusion and research.

SPAIN ROAD TRIP: Gibraltar, Cádiz, Tarifa & Mérida
Head to Spain to see the highlights of sunny Andalucía or the historic city of Mérida.
???? Gibraltar 00:01
An Anglo-Dutch force captured Gibraltar from Spain in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession on behalf of the Habsburg claim to the Spanish throne. The sovereignty of Gibraltar is a major point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations as Spain asserts a claim to the territory. Gibraltarians overwhelmingly rejected proposals for Spanish sovereignty in a 1967 referendum and again in 2002.
???? Cádiz 01:50
Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in western Europe, was founded by the Phoenicians.[4] Cádiz has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century.
???? Vejer de la Frontera 02:35
Vejer is located on a hill, around 190 m above sea level
???? Tarifa - Bolonia 03:28
Bolonia is a coastal village and beach in the municipality of Tarifa. The ruins of the Roman town of Baelo Claudia are located near the beach, considered to be the most complete Roman town ruins yet uncovered in Spain.
???? Mérida 04:28
The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. The town was founded in 25 BC, with the name of Emerita Augusta (meaning the veterans – discharged soldiers – of the army of Augustus, who founded the city; the name Mérida is an evolution of this) by order of Emperor Augustus, to protect a pass and a bridge over the Guadiana river

AS QR codes and scanning pens to reveal the archaeological secrets of Cástulo

Archaeologists of Cástulo's Archaeological site use QR codes and scanning pens to speed up the documentation of excavations, what allows them dedicating more time to the field work. The pan transmits everything it writes to the computer and there it is shared with the rest of the archaeologists. Regarding QR codes, these are used to classify the pieces found offering the advantage of providing a lot of information in a tiny space.

House of the Birds at Italica, Spain
The House of the Birds at Italica in Spain (the birthplace of the Emperor Trajan) is said to be one of the most 'Italian'. Entrance is through a small atrium which leads to a peristyle garden occupying the central part of the house, surrounded by the other rooms. It's partly restored. I'm not too sure of the date - but I think it is mainly 2nd century AD. I filmed this in April 2010.
