Museums in Central Asia: The Role of Cultural Institutions in disseminating Information
The countries of Central Asia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, or Uzbekistan have great tourist potential both for foreign visitors and companies who might be interested in investing in tourism. A key factor making the place so attractive for tourists is its history, starting with the Silk Road, which dates back to Roman times (Buyers, 2003), continuing with renowned scientists and scholars of the Medieval world, through the dominance of the nomads, the Russian empire, the Soviet era. If we add the beauty of nature, landscapes, cultural, archaeological and heritage unique attractions, hospitality of people, arts and crafts of the region, it is easy to understand why this region can be considered as a unique and very attractive tourist destination. However, one common denominator in all the studies is that all these countries, to a different degree, lack proper infrastructure and have not developed proper mechanisms to attract more potential visitors and tourists. One of the most often quoted sentences in the literature on the tourism industry is that information is the lifeblood of tourism.. It has been clearly demonstrated in numerous studies that museums have direct impact on a country’s economy. The aim of this paper is to analyse if, and to what extent, the countries of Central Asia are competitive in promoting their national heritage. It aims to verify, to what degree historical and archaeological museums in the countries of Central Asia are able to adopt effective strategies to facilitate access to information for potential tourists in order to attract them. The issue of competitiveness of the museums on the digital level and the issue of digital divide is the most important one. Providing digital access to the exhibitions, information on museums has been analysed. The objects of the present analysis are historical and archaeological museums in five countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. For each country two museums were chosen for the analysis. The criteria of the choice were as follows:
• State museums
• Possessing archaeological, ethnographic or historical collections
• At least one of the museums in every of the country in question is situated in its capital.

STORYLINE
A one-and-a-half metre tall Buddha sitting in the lotus position has been discovered near the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, by a joint Russian-Kyrgyz archaeological expedition lead by the Russian State Hermitage.
In what is believed to be a former temple, archaeologists in their fifth season of digging unearthed the massive statue which they believe to be from the 8th to 10th century.
The top half of the Buddha, in a state of disrepair, was taken away for reconstruction. Currently, only the legs of the Buddha in the lotus position remain.
This large area, in what is now a cow pasture and formerly a Soviet collective farm, is home to three separate structures - one of which, a large Buddhist stupa, stood in what scientists believe to be an ancient monastery.
Such a large statue is an unusual finding in the remote mountainous republic of Kyrgyzstan, an area not known for its pre-Islamic buddha presence.
It is far from an ordinary discovery because a small number of Buddhist religious structures are known in Central asia. They are mostly concentrated in the territory of southern Tajikistan and southern Uzbekistan - the territory of northern Bactria, said a representative from the Hermitage, Asad Targoev.

Burana Tower – Kyrgyzstan
The Burana Tower is located within a large archaeological and architectural complex near Tokmok, 80 km to the east of Bishkek. This is a unique minaret, built in the 11th century in the medieval town Balasagun, the capital of prosperous Karakhanid State. Once near the tower stood a mosque and a minaret which was used to call people to pray.
On the east side of the tower there are the remains of mausoleums. Along the perimeter of the museum complex you can find ancient Turkic stone sculptures.

Mountain Sulaiman-Too in Osh, Kyrgyzstan
The Sulayman Mountain , also known as Sulaiman-Too, Sulayman is the only World Heritage Site located entirely in the country of Kyrgyzstan. It is located in the city of Osh and was once a major place of Muslim and pre-Muslim pilgrimage. The rock rises abruptly from the surrounding plains of the Fergana Valley and is a popular place among locals and visitors, with a splendid view.
This mountain is thought by some researchers and historians to be the famous landmark of antiquity known as the “Stone Tower”, which Claudius Ptolemy wrote about in his famous work Geography. It marked the midpoint on the ancient Silk Road, the overland trade route taken by caravans between Europe and Asia.
Sulayman is a prophet in the Qur'an, and the mountain contains a shrine that supposedly marks his grave. Women who ascend to the shrine on top and crawl though an opening across the holy rock will, according to legend, give birth to healthy children. The trees and bushes on the mountain are draped with numerous prayer flags, small pieces of cloth that are tied to them.
According to the UNESCO, the mountain is the most complete example of a sacred mountain anywhere in Central Asia, worshipped over several millennia. The site is still a popular place for local Muslims, with stairs leading up to the highest peak where there stands a small mosque originally built by Babur in 1510. Much of the mosque was reconstructed in the late 20th century.
The rock also contains the National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulayman that was built during the Soviet era, showing archaeological findings from the area and its history. The lower slope of the mountain is surrounded by a cemetery.

The Mausoleums of Uzgen - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
The mausolea of Uzgen are famous far beyond the town boundaries. The about one thousand years old buildings have survived the storming by Genghis Khan in 1219/1220 and are part of the few, still preserved buildings from that period. The three halls with their domes are built so close to each other that they appear like one single building.
The middle and largest mausoleum was built for the conqueror of Bukhara and Samarkand, Arsian-llek Nasr-ben-Ali, who died in 1013 AD. The northern mausoleum was for Jalal al-Din Ali, a Ghurid leader from Bamiyan (Afghanistan), who died in 1215.
For whom one built the third mausoleum is no longer known today.
All three buildings stand out due to their artistic façades with ornaments from terracotta and alabaster carvings. The southern and smallest mausoleum is artfully decorated with ornaments, arabesques and document friezes. All have impressive portals that emphasize the importance of mausoleums.
The entrances of the buildings face west so that the end face points to the east.
At the end of our guided tour with Mr. Khusniddin, Mr. Avaz Tursunbaev the director of the Uzgen Archaeological-Architectural Museum Complex joined us, to answer any open questions.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills

Found an ancient city under water. 2,500 years. Finds discoveries travel.
Divers of the SKAT club at the Tomsk State University (TSU) returned from the Issyk-Kul lake, where they participated in the archaeological expedition of the National Academy of Sciences of Kyrgyzstan. This year they discovered a previously unknown Scythian city, which existed about 2-2,5 thousand years ago.
The Burana Tower - Kyrgyzstan 4K Travel Channel
The Burana Tower is located about 12 km southwest of the city of Tokmok in the valley of the Chu river. The tower was built in the 10th or 11th century. Its original height was 40 meters. Today, its height is 21.7m. The upper part was destroyed by an earthquake.
Upon arrival on the site, we only notice the massive tower, which has a diameter of almost 10 m at the base.
The tower gets a high significance if one knows that here used to be a town on an area of 20 to 30 km ², as excavations testify. Presumably, it was the city of Balasagun. Balasagun was founded by the Sogdiern who had its roots in Iran. It was first mentioned in 942. Shortly thereafter, the city was conquered by the Turkish Karachanids and declared the capital of the empire. When the empire was divided in the mid-11th century, the city was so weakened that it could be conquered easily by the Mongol Kara-Khitan Khanate. In 1211, the son of the former leader of the Naimans came to power but was in conflict with Genghis Khan. Thus, in 1217 the Mongols of Genghis Khan took over the city, which afterward fell into oblivion.
Today, the municipal area which was surrounded by a double wall can still be recognized. A hill, which originally was a citadel is west of the Burana Tower. The name Burana derived from the Turkish word Murana and means minaret. The minaret is the oldest in Central Asia. There is a similar tower in Ösgön which, also had guard functions. One may suspect similar functions here since the entrance is located at a height of 7 m. In the case of an attack, it was easier to defend.
During the excavations, one also found the remains of religious buildings, such as a mosque and many mausoleums.
A lot of petroglyphs and Balbals (little gravestones) are exhibited in the northern part of the area. One has brought them here from the entire Chu Valley.
A small museum displays artifacts found during excavations. Also, many historical photos and illustrations of reconstructions are on display.
We also take the opportunity to make a small flight with a drone to get an overview of the terrain. Above all, the remains of the excavations are easy to recognize from the air. Unfortunately, the weather is a bit hazy, so that the huge mountain range of the Kyrgyz mountains in the background only partially stands out.

Osh | Kyrgyzstan | Ош, O'sh, Fergana Valley , capital of the south, Great Silk Road
Osh (Kyrgyz: Ош, Russian: Ош, Uzbek: O'sh) is the second largest city in Kyrgyzstan, located in the Fergana Valley in the south of the country and often referred to as the capital of the south. It is the oldest city in the country (estimated to be more than 3000 years old), and has served as the administrative center of Osh Region since 1939. The city has an ethnically mixed population of about 255,800 in 2012, comprising Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Russians, Tajiks, and other smaller ethnic groups. At least 24 people are feared dead after a massive landslide buried a village in southern Kyrgyzstan, according to government sources of the central Asian republic.
The landslide happened at around 7am (local time) on Saturday when about one million cubic metres of mud buried the village of Ayu, in the Uzgen district, Osh region, which buried seven inhabited houses.
Kyrgyzstan's President Almazbek Atambayev has instructed to take all necessary measures to remedy the disaster and assist the victims' families, according to a statement released by the presidential spokesman.
However, the spokesman for the Ministry of Emergency Situations also pointed out that last March the inhabitants of 11 houses in Ayu were warned they had to abandon their homes and move to safer ground due to the elevated risk of landslide.
Four of the 11 forewarned families did heed the authorities' advice and abandoned their homes which also ended buried under the landslide. The landslide, caused by heavy rains, destroyed eleven houses in the village in Uzgen district of Osh region at around 0120 GMT on Saturday. The exact number of people hit by the landslide was unclear, the Emergency Ministry said.

The city's industrial base, established during the Soviet period, largely collapsed after the break-up of the Soviet Union and has recently only started to revive. The proximity of the Uzbekistan border, which cuts through historically linked territories and settlements, deprives Osh of much of its former hinterland and presents a serious obstacle to trade and economic development. Daily flights from Osh Airport link Osh - and hence the southern part of Kyrgyzstan - to Bishkek and the north. Osh has two railway stations and a railway connection to Andijan in neighbouring Uzbekistan, but no passenger traffic and only sporadic freight traffic. Most transport is by road. The recent upgrading of the long and arduous road through the mountains to Bishkek has greatly improved communications.
The city has several monuments, including one to the southern Kyrgyz queen Kurmanjan Datka and one of the few remaining statues of Lenin. A Russian Orthodox church, reopened after the rk of antiquity known as the “Stone Tower”, which Claudius Ptolemy wrote about in his famous work Geography (Ptolemy). It marked the midpoint on the ancient Silk Road, the overland trade route taken by caravans between Europe and Asia.[3] The National Historical and Archaeological Museum Complex Sulayman is carved in the mountain, containing a collection of archaeological, geological and historical finds and information about local flora and fauna.
Its first western-style supermarket Narodnyj opened in March 2007.[4]
Administration[edit]
Osh city (Ош шаар - Osh shaar) covers 182.5 square kilometres (70.5 square miles)[1] and like the capital city Bishkek, is administered separately and not part of any region, although it is the seat of Osh Region. Besides the city proper, 11 villages are administered by the city: Almalyk, Arek, Gulbaar-Toloykon, Japalak, Kengesh, Kerme-Too, Orke, Pyatiletka, Teeke and parts of Ozgur and Tölöykön.[1]
