GREECE, EXPLORING the ancient (6th century BC) TEMPLE of APOLLO ????️, Island of NAXOS
SUBSCRIBE: - The most famous landmark of Greece's Naxos Island is the Portara, a massive 2,500-year-old marble doorway that leads nowhere. The Portara is the entrance to an unfinished temple that faces directly toward Delos, Apollo's birthplace. For this reason most scholars believe it was dedicated to Apollo, but some think it was built in honor of Dionysus, who was worshipped on Naxos Island.

Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

GREECE: Island of NAXOS, EXPLORING the beautiful OLD VENETIAN MARKETS ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the OLD MARKET area which is, in fact, the area within the old castle walls at Naxos town. The streets are typically narrow with stone built walls that are lined with mostly tourist shops. This is probably the best place to go if travelling the island to find gifts for those back home is not your thing.
A very wide variety of stores are to be found here including jewelers with some pretty impressive and original designs. Naturally the height of the tourist season will give you a sense of the hustle and bustle of the island but it gets very pronounced in the narrow streets of the old market and it can be a bother or very exciting depending on what you like. There are a number of bars in the old market and night life is quite lively with a very Greek flavor which I found to be genuine and fun.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. The whitewashed, cubiform houses of its 2 principal towns, Fira and Oia, cling to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). They overlook the sea, small islands to the west and beaches made up of black, red and white lava pebbles.

Panagia Drosiani Naxos - Church Of Drosiani Naxos
Located 2.5km north of Halki, just below Moni, the small, peaceful Panagia Drosiani is among the oldest and most revered churches in Greece. Inside is a series of cavelike chapels. In the darkest chapels, monks and nuns secretly taught Greek language and religion to local children during the Turkish occupation. Several frescoes still grace the walls, and date from the 7th century.

The partially reconstructed part of the site consists of the Temple of Apollo (also, as alternatives Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus) below which is a stadium and a small theatre. It is included in a large park, Monte Smith, named for English Napoleonic admiral William Sidney Smith.

GREECE, EXPLORING ISLAND of NAXOS, the BEST BEACH to visit ????️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go to Naxos which is a Greek island in the South Aegean, the largest of the Cyclades island group. Its fertile landscape spans mountain villages, ancient ruins and long stretches of beach. The namesake capital (also called Hora or Chora) is a port town filled with whitewashed, cube-shaped houses and medieval Venetian mansions.
We are going to visit 5 beaches and we will decide which is the best one: 1) The beach of Agios Georgios or what the tourists call Saint George, is the main tourist area of the island and despite the number of hotels, restaurants, bars and tourist shops it is a very enjoyable place to be, if you like windsurfing, water-sports, people watching and if you have children because the sea is very shallow. 2) and 3) The beaches of Agios Prokopis and Agia Anna are a little quieter but also very popular and there are rows of umbrellas and beach chairs that you can rent. Many hotels provide them for free so ask if you are staying nearby. These beaches though crowded in places are long enough so you can always find somewhere semi-private. These two beaches are considered by many to be the most beautiful in Greece with clear turquoise water that makes every picture you take look like a postcard or an advertisement for a Caribbean holiday. 4) Further on, the beach at Plaka is considered by others to be the best beach on the island with about five kilometers of golden sand. 5) The town of Apollonos (photo), on the far northern tip of the island has a large sandy cove and some restaurants and hotels and the feel of being on another island altogether.

Naxos Portara - Apollo Tample Naxos
Naxos Portara - Apollo Tample Naxos
Naxos Portara, Cyclades: The Portara, or the Great Door, is essentially a massive marble doorway, that stands proudly as teh jewel of Naxos. It lies close to the port, on the islet of Palatia which was once a hill. Back in the ancient times a strip of land connected the north side of Naxos port to the islet of Palatia. Today, the strip of land has been replaced by a causeway.

Temple Of Demeter Naxos - Ancient Greece
Temple Of Demeter Naxos - Ancient Greece
The Temple of Demeter was built in the 6th century BC. The temple was partially dismantled in the 6th century AD when a church was built over it. In later centuries the site was abandoned and plundered for its marble.
Just outside the village of Sangri on Naxos Island in the Cyclades is the attractive ruin of the Temple of Demeter. Demeter is a grain goddess, so it seems only natural to find her temple among the rich fields of Naxos.
Intimate little archaeological site where one can see the first known temple to use some of the optical refinements later used in the Parthenon. Free. Very windy and dry, bring sun protection if you plan to spend much time. Consult a guide or history book as well as there is limited interpretive signage on site.
