NESSEBAR AND BURGAS TOUR (UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE)
At the crossroads of culture, Nessebar was a starting line for many European concepts we take for granted today. Originally a Thracian settlement, it became a Greek colony at the beginning of the 6th century BC. But the peninsular town possesses more than the remains of an assortment of iconic and historic eras. This hub on the Black Sea changed the world because the very concept of money was invented here.
Nessebar was once an important trading city and part of the Delian League: an alliance of ancient Greek states. During the centuries to follow, it remained a strategic nexus for the cultures and epochs that passed through this pivotal place. Today, you'll find the remnants of these eras in the form of buildings from the Middle Ages and Byzantine Empires. The historic city, located in modern-day Bulgaria, reflects all the stages of development of architectural styles in the Balkans.
Nessebar was also responsible for another key aspect of the region's development—namely the evolution of trade and a monetary system to match.
Nessebar is proud of its churches. The Church of St. Sofia, known as the Old Metropolitan Church, and the Church of Virgin Eleusa, situated on the northern shore, are three-aisled basilicas dating to the early Byzantine period in the 5th and 6th centuires. The Church of St. John the Baptist, from the 11th century, is distinguished by its cylindrical dome. The Church of St. Stephen is remarkable for its frescoes from the 16th century.
Nessebar is also the cultural treasury of Bulgaria. In 1956 it was declared “a museum town, an archaeological, and architectural reserve.” Because of its unique historic value, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1983. Today, the Old Town is an attractive place for romantic walks along the narrow cobbled streets, between boutiques selling interesting handmade goods.
Burgas is one of the largest cities in the country. It is situated on the Black Sea shore, in the Burgas Bay, at a distance of 400 km from Sofia and 130 km from Varna. Burgas is an administrative center of the area with the same name. The city population is more than 230,000 people.
The Burgas port is the largest cargo port in the country. The airport which serves international flights is situated at a distance of 10 km north-east from the city.
Burgas is the cultural center of the region, which is evident by the active work of the Burgas Opera, Dramatic Theater “Adriana Budevska”, and the State Puppet Theater of Burgas. There are also multiple galleries in the city. Many cultural events are also conducted in the renovated Marine Casino. The Marine Park is a suitable place for a walk and relaxation. The summer theater of the city is also situated here. Diverse concerts and performances are conducted in it.
The Burgas forebridge is one of the favorite places for walk of the residents and the visitors of the city. It was constructed in 1936 and is situated near the Casino.

6500-Year-Old Europe's Oldest Town Uncovered
A 6,500 year old town is uncovered, becoming Europe's oldest town.
The oldest town in Europe has been uncovered by archaeologists in Bulgaria.
The prehistoric settlement is believed to be from between 47 hundred and 42 hundred BC.
The residents of the ancient town made salt by boiling water from a local spring and making the salt into bricks. The salt was used to preserve meat, or traded as an important commodity of the time.
The discovery of the town might help scientists understand another find that has remained a mystery. 40 years ago, the oldest collection of gold objects was found at a burial ground about 20 miles away from the town.
The town was fortified and surrounded with stone walls, which may have been in place to protect the salt production efforts and the resulting profits.
Another ancient discovery was found in Jerusalem when a man's dog accidentally fell into a hole and was rescued.
More holes were found in the area, and ancient wine presses were unearthed. Now there are plans to turn the area into a park with reconstructed versions of the wine presses.

Bulgaria HiLites: Nesebar, Black Sea Coast
Nesebar, also transcribed as Nessebar or Nesebur; ancient name: Mesembria) is an ancient city and a major seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, located in Nesebar municipality, Burgas Province. Often referred to as the Pearl of the Black Sea and Bulgaria's Dubrovnik, Nesebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history.
Originally a Thracian settlement known as Menebria, the town became a Greek colony when settled by Dorians from Megara at the beginning of the 6th century BC, and was an important trading centre from then on and a rival of Apollonia (Sozopol). It remained the only Doric colony along the Black Sea coast, as the rest were typical Ionic colonies. Remains from the Hellenistic period include the acropolis, a temple of Apollo, and an agora. A wall which formed part of the fortifications can still be seen on the north side of the peninsula. Bronze and silver coins were minted in the city since the 5th century BC and gold coins since the 3rd century BC.
The town fell under Roman rule in 71 BC, yet continued to enjoy privileges such as the right to mint its own coinage. It was one of the most important strongholds of the Byzantine Empire from the 5th century AD onwards, and was fought over by Byzantines and Bulgarians, being captured and incorporated in the lands of the First Bulgarian Empire in 812 by Khan Krum after a two week siege only to be ceded back to Byzantium by Knyaz Boris I in 864 and reconquered by his son Tsar Simeon the Great. During the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire it was also contested by Bulgarian and Byzantine forces and enjoyed particular prosperity under Bulgarian tsar Ivan Alexander (1331--1371) until it was conquered by Crusaders led by Amadeus VI, Count of Savoy in 1366. The Bulgarian version of the name, Nesebar or Mesebar, has been attested since the 11th century.
Monuments from the Middle Ages include the 5--6th century Stara Mitropoliya (old bishopric; also St Sophia), a basilica without a transept; the 10th century church of the Virgin; and the 11th century Nova Mitropoliya (new bishopric; also St Stephen) which continued to be embellished until the 18th century. In the 13th and 14th century a remarkable series of churches were built: St Theodore, St Paraskeva, St Michael St Gabriel, and St John Aliturgetos.
The capture of the town by the Turks in 1453 marked the start of its decline, but its architectural heritage remained and was enriched in the 19th century by the construction of wooden houses in style typical for the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast during this period. It was a kaza centre in İslimye sanjak of Edirne Province before 1878. After the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule in 1878, Nesebar became part of the autonomous Ottoman province of Eastern Rumelia as a kaza centre in Burgaz sanjak until it united with the Principality of Bulgaria in 1886.
Around the end of the 19th century Nesebar was a small town of Greek fishermen and winegrowers, but developed as a key Bulgarian seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century. After 1925 a new town part was built and the historic Old Town was restored.
Perperikon Bulgaria - the largest megalith ensemble in the Balkans
Where?
Perperikon (also Perpericon) is the largest megalithic archeological site in the Balkans, and currently being unearthed by Prof. Nikolai Ovcharov, known as the Bulgarian Indiana Jones. It sits on a high, rocky hill some 15 kilometers to the north of the city Kardzhali in Bulgaria.
What?
While the first traces of civilization at Perperikon go back to 5000 B.C. what is of most interest to archeologists is the more recent (1500 B.C.), and only known example, of a huge Thracian city called “the European Machu Picchu” or the “Stone Pompeii.” Complete with buildings, rooms, streets, squares and a water supply system, it is unlike anything that anyone had ever associated with the “barbaric” Thracians.
By whom?
Of all the ancient cultures, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Thracians are some of the most mysterious. Seen by the Greeks as great warriors – as well as barbarians – the Thracians had no written language, and left behind little in the way of monumental architecture.
Bulgaria HiLites: The Ulpia Eskus Archeological Reserve
The Ulpia Eskus Archeological Reserve from the 3rd-4th c. is on the municipal territory very close to the village of Gigen. In archeological terms the town has been researched since the beginning of the last century and the excavation, preservation and restoration work continues until nowadays. The municipality is planning to build a museum and an archeological center in order to make best use of its setting and reserves for the development of cultural, hunting, fishing and rural tourism.
After excavations in the village of Gigen the archeologists discovered not only an early-fortress wall of an ancient town, dating from II century AC, but also a lot of findings and information for the lifestyle of the population, that inhabited that region. One of the most remarkable things discovered in the town of Ulpiya Eskus is the mosaic Aheitsi. In the Regional history museum monuments, findings from the Roman town Ulpiya Eskus and the early Byzantine fortress of Storgozia are exposed: architecture details, colored floor mosaics, sculptures of Greek -- Roman pantheon divinities, golden ornaments.
