Archaeological Museum - Sarnath, Varanasi
Visitors at Archaeological Museum in Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.
The oldest, prominent and one of the most important museums of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is the Sarnath Archaeological Museum.
Sarnath Museum is the oldest site museum of Archaeological Survey of India. It houses the findings and excavations at the archaeological site of Sarnath, by the Archaeological Survey of India. Sarnath is located near Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The museum has 6,832 sculptures and artifacts.
In order to keep the antiquities found from the site, a decision was taken in 1904 by the Government to construct a site museum adjacent to the excavated site at Sarnath. It was due to initiative of Sir John Marshall, the then Director General of Archaeology in India, that this museum was created. The plans were prepared by Mr. James Ramson, the then consulting Architect to the Government of India. The building was completed in 1910 to house, display and study the antiquities in their right perspective. The building forms half of a monastery (Sangharam) in plan.
There are five galleries and two verandahs on the museum to display the antiquities ranging from the 3rd century BCE to 12th century AD found at Sarnath.
Sarnath has yielded a rich collection of sculptures, artifacts and edifices comprising numerous Buddha and Bodhisattva images and other ancient remains. Finest specimens of Buddhist art and other important remains have been housed at the museum.
While the single most famous exhibit of this museum is the Lion Capital of Asoka, the Sarnath museum has a small but awe-inspiring collection of Buddhist artifacts. Among the things to see is a beautiful sculpture of the Buddha from the 5th century. The Buddha sits cross-legged, with eyes downcast in deep meditation, and a halo around his head. Also worth exploring are several beautiful figures of the bodhisattvas.
Of other Buddhist remains there is an impressive and amazingly beautiful, life-size standing Bodhisattva and a delicate image of the Bodhisattva with a lotus and yet another bronze sculpture showing the Bodhisattva with multiple arms. The museum at Sarnath also houses an excellent collection of figures and sculptures from the Mauryan, the Kushana and the Gupta periods. Prominent of them is the earliest Buddha image found at Sarnath and many images of Hindu Gods dating from the 9th to 12th centuries.

Varanasi, India: The Important Buddhist Site of Sarnath
It is a short ride from Varanasi to Sarnath located on the outskirts of Varanasi where Lord Buddha is said to have delivered his first sermon after enlightenment; preaching his four noble truths. The Buddha was enlightened in Bodhgaya and then went to Sarnath seeking his five former companions, taught them what he learned and they also became enlightened.
Important sights are: the Dharmekh Stupa (128 feet high, 93 feet in diameter) dating from around 200 BC and said to be the spot on which Buddha preached his first sermon; Mulangandhakuti Vihara where a small cottage once stood that Buddha lived in; and what remains of the Ashokan pillars with two writings on it. A lion capital once topped the Ashoka Pillar and is now on display inside the Sarnath Archaeological Museum; sorry no photos allowed inside and would you believe they didn't even sell a postcard of the exquisite lions?

The Idea Behind the Statue
A joint Indo-Thai project, the idea of construction of the Buddha statue was first conceived in 1970 at the time of formation of society. The founder members of the society, Rasmi Shashan (a Buddhist monk of Indian origin) and Prakash Samadhiguna (monk of Thai origin) decided to build a standing statue of Lord Buddha at Sarnath, where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon.
The construction of statue is said to have started as a gesture to protest the destruction of Buddhist statues in many parts of the world. Located in the confines of the Thai Temple in Sarnath, the statue consists of as many as 815 stones. There is a beautiful garden around the statue that compliments the overall surroundings.
One of the main attractions of Sarnath is the 80 ft high statue of Buddha. It is India’s tallest standing statue of Lord Buddha. It took 14 years to construct this statue. The work on the statue was started in 1997 and it was unveiled in 2011. This standing statue of Buddha is located on the premises of Thai Buddha Vihar in Sarnath.
This 80-ft Buddha statue made from sandstone is a result of joint efforts between India and Thailand. The standing statue of Lord Buddha is built over an area of 2.5 acre inside the premises of Thai Buddha Vihar (earlier known as Mrigdayavan Mahavihar Society).

Visiting Sarnath in Varanasi, the Place of Buddha [Incredible India]
Sarnath, 10km from Varanasi, is one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage centers.
It is believed that after attaining the Enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, it was here that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon, sanctified as Maha Dharm Chakra Parivartan.
The Chaukhandi Stupa is the place where, during his first visit to Sarnath, Lord Buddha met his first five disciples.

Sarnath Varanasi Video Visit Temples Stupas Pillars & Gardens, Indian Food Paneer. India Travel Vlog
India video of Sarnath Varanasi and Indian Food (Paneer). India Travel Vlog from Travel with Simon. Stupas, Pillars, temples and gardens.
Varanasi (also known as Benares, Banaras and/or Kashi) in Uttar Pradesh India is known as the spiritual capital of India, but as a tourist Varanasi city itself it can be a bit intense. Nearby (about 13km from town) and well worth a visit is Sarnath, the holiest of seven sacred cities in Hinduism and Jainism.
Lord Buddha is said to have preached his first sermon at the Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, making it one of the most recognisable sites of Buddhism in India and thronged with followers of Buddhism as well as tourists, but it’s still quiet in comparison to the chaos of Varanasi and international visitors to the area will enjoy the green of the gardens as well as the temples, pillars and stupas.
The archaeological museum at Sarnath is the oldest site museum of Archaeological Survey of India. The Lion Capitol of Ashoka (a sculpture of four lions standing back to back) which forms the basis of the official Emblem of India was originally placed atop the Ashoka Pillar at Sarnath, but is now housed in the Sarnath Museum.
All the temples, shrines and points of interest in Sarnath including the Dhamekh stupa, the ruins of the Mulagandha Kuti, the main shrine where Buddha is said to have sat in meditation, the Chaukhandi stupa and the golden temple at Sarnath are within walking distance of the museum.
After haggling over the cost of a Tuk Tuk to get from Varanasi to Sarnath, and exploring the temples, archaeological sites and gardens of Sarnath, I also get to taste some of my first Indian food, including paneer.
Join me in my next video of India when I return to the holy city of Varanasi to see the ghats and watch the ceremonies on the bank of the Ganges river.

Rare video of India in the 1920's: Dhamek Stupa of Sarnath and nearby excavations
This rare 16 mm black and white film was taken by Americans traveling in India in the late 1920's. Here they visit Sarnath, the location of the famous Deer Park where Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment. King Ashoka built a stupa and pillar to mark the holy site after Buddha's death. The current stupa was rebuilt around 500 CE, and the famous pillar is now in the archaeological museum at Sarnath. The tourists also filmed an excavation site at Sarnath.
