SANTORINI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM FIRA
A Fine Collection of Exhibits
While many outstanding archaeological finds from Santorini will be found at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, the Historical and Cultural Archaeological Museum of Santorini in Fira contains artifacts from excavations on the island ...
It was built in 1960 by the Ministry of Public Works in order to replace the old museum (built in 1902), that had collapsed during the earthquake of 1956.
Noteworthy are a fine collection of geometric red and black vases from the fifth century BC Inscriptions are plentiful among the displays in the museum and a certain amount of Minoan ware is also on exhibit.
The museum also hosts impressive frescoes as well as sculptures of the Hellenistic period, Byzantine works of art and even some remains of prehistoric times.

Santorini: The Prehistoric Museum at Fira
An eruption dated to 1540 B.C. destroyed Thera (now Santorini) cratering out the island, leaving The Caldera, or cauldron. The Minoan settlement at Akrotiri was covered in pumice. This is where the oldest frescoes in the world were found.
The Large Ship fresco, which was under restoration, depicts a naval battle, city walls, human figures, landscape, fish, and animals. The scene may be a representation of a seasonal maritime festival or even a scene from a lost epic poem.
The wall painting of The Blue Monkeys, showing them climbing rocks in an effort to escape two dogs, is dated from 1700 B.C.
The Fisherman” (1650 BC) has a partially shaved head, dyed blue, giving an offering of fish, likely performing a religious ritual.
These frescoes, along with the three that follow, on display in The National Archaeological Museum in Athens, were also found at Akrotiri.
This fresco is the first example of landscape painting, along with spritely gazelles and well-heeled boxers.

Santorini | The Archaeological Museum
Not many people know that the official name of Santorini is Thera. It's named after an ancient Spartan named Theras who fled here from a family intrigue and decided to set up a colony.
Not surprisingly, ancient Thera flourished in the flat and fertile eastern part of the island, for about a thousand years. You can see the ruins at the foot of a hill that rises out of the plain near the coast.
You might be interested to know that in classical times Thera was contested between the great powers of Athens and Sparta. The museum's exhibits include prehistoric pottery, archaic statuettes and Roman-era glassware.
The Thera museum can be combined with a day at the beach at nearby Kamari, basking on the fine dark volcanic sand, and then after sunset, stroll down to the Nihteri taverna for fish with everything. About the wine -- we'll come back to that.

Oman Archaeological Museum
Oman - a fascinating country full of treasures both revealed and concealed; celebrated and yet to be discovered places, cultures and secrets. Among the world in which we live is another, hidden world, a secret archive waiting to be discovered.
Archaeology reveals this forgotten world, linking our heritage with the present, and providing an outlook on the future: Where past meets future is therefore the guiding principle of all planning and presentation of the new OAM - OMAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM. This offers the opportunity to revive the life and achievements of our ancestors in a personal and exciting way; responding to the current growing public awareness and interest in this field.
Salut Castle is one of the most suitable location to establish a central repository for Omani ancient cultural heritage. The Castle is one of the most significant sites in Omani history, however it is still not accessible to the public -- thus the development of this site into an Archaeological Park allow both the values of the site, as well as Oman's long-standing traditions and successes in archaeological field work to be interpreted to the general public.
To achieve and celebrate this goal the design of the OAM becomes one of Oman's most innovative and sustainability driven architectural projects, making it the most important archaeological museum in the Arabian Peninsula.
The vision to aesthetically blend architecture with the natural landscape is illustrated with dramatic clarity. The design links traditional Islamic architecture with organic forms; connecting the building with Oman's cultural traditions, the surrounding natural landscape and the 'archaeological concept' of discovering and excavating things that are found in the ground.
With unique objects, vivid and emotional pictures and stories, and with cutting edge high tech, the exhibits of the OAM transport visitors on an extraordinary journey into former times. Visitors can experience at close hand, a wide range of periods and themes presented in an innovative way that sets the main focus on real experiences of the past. The generously sized exhibition rooms and adjacent spaces for temporary exhibitions cover an area of about 5,000 sqm. The OAM also accommodates a Science Wing for the aims of scientific research and an auditorium for scientific and public communication.
A key part of the OAM concept is to create an extensive park that embraces and connects the main archaeological features and that can be reached by a variety of personal and guided mobility systems. Its infrastructure and the correct protection of all of these historical elements will be carefully designed to meet the UNESCO World Heritage Guidelines.
The OAM concept and feasibility study has been developed by INTEWO + PARTNERS. More information is available online at intewoandpartners.org.

Santorini | Museum Οf Prehistoric Thera
Santorini is one of the oldest continuously-inhabited islands on the whole Mediterranean Sea, with a history going back to before 3,000 BC. You can view some of the amazingly ancient artifacts at the Thera Prehistoric Museum.
This museum is often confused with the Akrotiti archaeological museum, which also contains finds from prehistoric times. The Thera Prehistoric Museum is conveniently located in Fira, the main town of Santorini, so if you're staying in the town, no special trip is needed.
