Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida (UNESCO/NHK)
The colony of Augusta Emerita, which became present-day Mérida in Estremadura, was founded in 25 B.C. at the end of the Spanish Campaign and was the capital of Lusitania. The well-preserved remains of the old city include, in particular, a large bridge over the Guadiana, an amphitheatre, a theatre, a vast circus and an exceptional water-supply system. It is an excellent example of a provincial Roman capital during the empire and in ...

Palau de la Música Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau, ... (UNESCO/NHK)
These are two of the finest contributions to Barcelona's architecture by the Catalan art nouveau architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. The Palau de la Música Catalana is an exuberant steel-framed structure full of light and space, and decorated by many of the leading designers of the day. The Hospital de Sant Pau is equally bold in its design and decoration, while at the same time perfectly adapted to the needs of the sick.

Places to see in ( Cantabria - Spain ) Museo de Prehistoria y Arqueologia de Cantabria
The Museum of Prehistory and Archeology of Cantabria , is a museum specialized in prehistoric archeology and also has collections of the ancient and medieval world . It is located in the city of Santander , in Cantabria ( Spain ).
The museum was created in 1926 by the Diputación Provincial de Santander , which commissioned his direction and development to Jesús Carballo García . Its inauguration attended Alfonso XIII . It had its first headquarters in the building of the Institute of Santander, present Institute Santa Clara , happening in 1941 to the low of the Palace of the Provincial Deputation, where it has remained until a few years.
This center, of great international importance for the study and contemplation of prehistory was reformed and redefined deeply at the beginning of the XXI century , showing from December of 2001 rooms that mix old collections with materials found in recent excavations. In it have collaborated both national companies, including Caja Cantabria , and international, highlighting the Japanese Texnai .
At the time, the construction project for the new headquarters of the Government of Cantabria , on the site where the museum and the former headquarters were located, forced the museum to be moved to the lower floors of the reconverted Mercado del Este, awaiting its definitive location. Several venues have been set up for this museum. At first, the future Museum of Cantabria was planned to be built in the trough of Las Llamas de Santander and later it was proposed to condition the former headquarters of the Bank of Spain in the Cantabrian capital. Finally, in 2014 , it was announced that MUPAC would occupy the entire Eastern Market, for which it would be necessary to get an agreement with all the commercial premises located on the first floor and recondition the building for future exhibition spaces. In August of 2016 , it was confirmed that a new building would be built in the parking lot of the Palais des Festivals with Gamazo , where ships were the Chantiers de l' Atlantique .
The strong point of the Museum of Prehistory and Archeology of Cantabria is its furniture collection of the Upper Paleolithic , one of the richest in the world. However, they are not the only pieces present in it. The oldest remains of the museum come from the Cave of El Castillo , more than 100,000 years old. In addition, there are Musterian tools from 100,000 to 40,000 years old, as well as all kinds of pieces from the Epipaleolithic , Chalcolithic or Bronze Age periods . Of course, the history of Cantabria has special importance, highlighting all kinds of objectsCantabrian people , including several stellate giant discoid stelae , such as Zurita stele .

The roman army in NW Hispania: new archaeological data
In the last decades several Roman camps have been discovered in the northernmost territories of the Iberian Peninsula, mainly related to the Augustus' campaings against the indigenous communities called Cantabri and Astures by the Roman ethnographes. Our aim in this paper to divulge deeper into this topic by presenting some sites recently discovered in the Spanish provinces of León, Asturias, Lugo and Coruña, as well as in northern Portugal.
We strongly recommend watching the video on full screen and use the interactive features. In the description of archeological sites, you will find orange buttons with the text Download KMZ file. If you open that in Google Earth, you will have access to location and valuable visual documentation on every single site we speak.

Cantabria is an autonomous region on Spain’s north coast. Santander, the capital, is a port on the Bay of Biscay, known for its long, curving El Sardinero Beach, and Cabo Mayor lighthouse. In the forested Cantabrian Mountains, Picos de Europa National Park has hiking trails and ski areas. The thousands of caves in Cantabria include El Soplao, with unusual stalactites and sheets of calcite hanging from the roof.
Cantabria is a historic Spanish community and autonomous community with Santander as its capital city. Cantabria is bordered on the east by the Basque Autonomous Community (province of Biscay), on the south by Castile and León (provinces of León, Palencia and Burgos), on the west by the Principality of Asturias, and on the north by the Cantabrian Sea (Bay of Biscay).
Cantabria belongs to Green Spain, the name given to the strip of land between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Mountains, so called because of its particularly lush vegetation, due to the wet and moderate oceanic climate. The climate is strongly influenced by Atlantic Ocean winds trapped by the mountains; the average annual precipitation is about 1,200 mm (47 inches). Cantabria has archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic period, although the first signs of human occupation date from the Lower Paleolithic. The most significant site for cave paintings is that in the cave of Altamira, dating from about 37,000 BC and declared, along with nine other Cantabrian caves, as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The modern Province of Cantabria was constituted on 28 July 1778 at Bárcena la Puente, Reocín. The Organic Law of the Autonomy Statute of Cantabria was approved on 30 December 1981, giving the region its own institutions of self-government.
There are 102 municipalities in Cantabria generally comprising several townships, and from these, several districts. The economy of Cantabria has primary industry, now in decline. The most significant consequence of the strong relief of the Cantabrian territory is the existence of topographic barriers that condition decisively the courses of the linking infrastructures, as much in the north-south orientation in the accesses to the Castilian Mesa. The main communications infrastructures of the region are:
