8. SOUNDBITE (Spanish): Ramiro Garcia Vazquez, Archaeologist, National Museum of Nicaragua:
This is the most important archaeological find in Nicaragua of antique statues. It is also (the finding) the first to be discovered in its original position, so it has high scientific value. This will allow us to study the find properly.
9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish): Ramiro Garcia Vazquez, Archaeologist, National Museum of Nicaragua:
Evidence from the statues shows them to be dated from some 1200 years ago.
10. SOUNDBITE (Spanish): Ramiro Garcia Vazquez, Archaeologist, National Museum of Nicaragua:
In the context of other finds from the general region, Nicaragua is the least studied in terms of archaeology, even considering that its treasures are many and its culture so incredibly rich.

STORYLINE:
A large cache of tribal statues dating back 1200 years has been discovered by a team of archaeologists in the jungles of Nicaragua.
The archaeologists say the 17 pieces were found near the hamlet of El Salto, in the municipality of Juigalpa, some 135 kilometres (84 miles) from the capital city of Managua.
The pieces, male and female figures, are about a metre high and are decorated with collars.
It is believed the area was once a ceremonial centre.
Six of the statues are intact, but the others have all suffered considerable decay said archaeologist Ramiro Garcia, from the Department of Anthropological Studies at the National Museum of Nicaragua.
The excavation was performed at the end of June after a construction company digging for building material came upon the artefacts.
After more digging, the archaeologists found the human-form statues organised in a semicircle.
Officials from the National Museum say once studies have been completed on the figures, they will be displayed at the Gregorio Aguilar Barea archaeological Museum in Juigalpa.
Although not generally considered part of the ancient Maya Empire, recent excavation is revealing Nicaragua has an increasingly intriguing pre-Colombian history.

All Along the Watchtowers!
All Along the Watchtowers! Balancing Heritage Protection and Development of Castle Sites with Scientific Research Potential of Buried Archaeology
Successive waves of conquest and colonisation throughout the Middle Ages have shaped society and the cultural geography of modern Europe. Castles and their remains are iconic remnants from that period, and as such form an important part of our cultural heritage. Across Europe, only recently is the scientific potential of the buried archaeological deposits within castles being realised, which can be overlooked in favour of the protection and consolidation of standing remains, and developments such as reconstruction and rebuilding projects. This paper reviews the state of archaeological remains within medieval castle sites across Europe (Estonia, France, Latvia, Poland, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands), their scientific value and potential threats to the buried archaeology based on geoarchaeological research. No standing remains survive at Karksi and Elbląg (Estonia and Poland) but both sites contained exceptionally well preserved waterlogged occupation deposits dating to the initial colonisation during Crusades. In Caen, Gien (both in France), Elbląg, and Kessel (The Netherlands), excavations were done ahead of development. They are examples of sites where different heritage perspectives had to be balanced due to development and rebuilding. In the Baltic, Dutch, French and Italian examples, micromorphology was instrumental in discovering that buried deposits contained the remains of (probably wooden) buildings from a first construction phase, or in characterising the changing use, and, following decay, the re-use occupation of structures. Molina de Aragón (Spain) is located in a UNESCO geopark. Geoarchaeological samples were collected recently from profiles created during previous excavations, which were conducted to support the architectural restoration but without a scientific focus on the medieval stratigraphy. These examples highlight the importance of a geoarchaeological perspective for both identifying and conserving cultural deposits within castles. They not only demonstrate the archaeological value of buried archaeological deposits, but also stress the threats to them due to development, rebuilding, and conservation.

Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Albayzin
Places to see in ( Andalusia - Spain ) Albayzin
El Albayzín also Albaicín, is a district of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It retains the narrow winding streets of its Medieval Moorish past dating back to the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. It was declared a world heritage site in 1984, along with the famous Alhambra.
Before the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, in what is now the city of Granada and its surroundings there were three small populations:
Iliberis (Elvira), what was later called Albaicin and Alcazaba
Castilia, near the present town of Atarfe
Garnata, on the opposite hill to the Alcazaba, which was more a neighborhood of Iliberis.
However, after these classic statements, current archaeological research, Madinat Ilbira located in Atarfe until the 11th century when that city was moved to the Albaicin after the fall of the Caliphate and the insecurity it generates. The inhabitants of Ilbira undergo as clients Sinhaya and ziríes and it is decided the transfer of the capital of the Cora de Elvira to Hill Albaicín.
The neighborhood had its greatest influence at the time of the Nasrids. The Albaicín maintains the urban fabric of the Moorish period, with narrow streets, in an intricate network that extends from the top (St. Nicholas) through the course of the river Darro and Calle Elvira, both located in Plaza Nueva.
In the Albaicín there are numerous monuments from different periods, mainly the Nasrid period and the Renaissance:
Ziri wall (11th century), established along the Sacromonte and Albaicín.
New door or door of Weights, the Granadian people call and know it as arc of weights.
Fajalauza door in Cuesta de San Gregorio Alto, part of the wall.
Alhacaba Towers, part of the wall.
Monaita door in Lona Lane, part of the wall.
Puerta de Elvira, at the beginning of Calle Elvira, part of the wall.

Church of San Cristobal and viewpoint with the same name, in Crta. De Murcia
St. Louis. Temple without worship and in ruins.
Church of San Juan de los Reyes, in the street San Juan de los Reyes.
Palace of Dar al-Horra, Aixa's residence, Muley Hacén's wife and the mother of Boabdil.
The Bañuelo.
Minaret of Almorabitun.
Trillo cistern.
House of the Masks, in the street Pagés, what remains of the house of the poet Pedro Soto de Rojas (17th century).
House Yanguas (16th century), at San Buenaventura, hodgepodge of Nasrid and Renaissance architecture. Currently, a Tourist hotel.
Church of Santa Ana, at the beginning of the Carrera del Darro.
Saint Peter and Saint Paul, in the Carrera del Darro.
Hermitage of San Miguel alto, Lane San Miguel ..

Casa del Almirante (Aragon), Calle San José, 16th century.
Castril House (1539) in the Carrera del Darro, Current Archaeological Museum of Granada.
Lona House in Lona Lane, on the site of the former palace of the kings Ziries.
Cordova Palace (16th century) in the Cuesta del Chapiz, current Municipal Archives.
Casa del Chapiz, This was built on the remains of a Moorish palace of the 14th century, which preserves part of the layout of the plant and some elements that were utilized when it was rebuilt in the early 16th century by the Morisco Lorenzo el Chapiz, whose name is preserved in the set and the street where it is located.
Casa de Zafra, 14th Century Spanish-Arab mansion, re-opened as Interpretative Center.

Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida (UNESCO/NHK)
The colony of Augusta Emerita, which became present-day Mérida in Estremadura, was founded in 25 B.C. at the end of the Spanish Campaign and was the capital of Lusitania. The well-preserved remains of the old city include, in particular, a large bridge over the Guadiana, an amphitheatre, a theatre, a vast circus and an exceptional water-supply system. It is an excellent example of a provincial Roman capital during the empire and in ...

Malaga Museum is the exhibition center of two institutions: the Archaeological Museum of Malaga Province with over 15,000 exhibits and the Museum of Fine Arts in Malaga with a collection of 2,000 paintings and sculptures created in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The museum building, the Palacio de la Aduana was built in the eighteenth century, but works were kept in hiding since 1997, while the inhabitants of the city fought for the establishment of the museum and the return of this vast heritage and building for the citizens of Malaga.
The long-awaited inauguration of the Museum of Malaga was held on 12th December 2016. The museum is now the fifth largest museum in Spain and the biggest in Andalusia. The admission is free for residents of the European Union. Tickets 1.50 Euro are available for the citizens of other countries and Great Britain after the Brexit
