1.1 Cancún and the Mayan Riviera
The area also boasts numerous fun activities such as dolphin and stingray swims, snorkeling among reefs and tropical fish, as well as scuba diving in the world's largest underwater museum, a spectacular collection of sculptures submerged at depths of up to eight meters.
2 Puerto Vallarta
Another of Mexico's increasingly popular beach destinations is the Pacific coastal city of Puerto Vallarta. Often shortened to just Vallarta, the city - many parts of which remain untouched by modern development - first appeared on the vacation radar in the 1960s as a playground for North America's social elite and has since become extremely popular among foreigners looking for second homes in a warmer climate.
3 Cabo San Lucas and the Los Cabos Corridor
At the southern tip of the beautiful Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos - often referred to as simply Cabo - is one of Mexico's top beach destinations. Consisting of a large stretch of coastline that extends from the towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo and known as the Los Cabos Corridor (Corredor Turistico), this 30-kilometer stretch of pristine beaches attracts visitors the world over for its clear waters, diving, snorkeling, and fishing (it also hosts the world's largest marlin contest).
4 Copper Canyon: Mexico's Grand Canyon
Chihuahua, one of Mexico's most northerly states - it shares the border with New Mexico in the US - is home to one of the country's most visited natural attractions, the stunning Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre). In a region known as the Sierra Madre Occidental and consisting of a spectacular group of deep canyons, Copper Canyon is, in fact, larger and deeper than its better-known cousin, the Grand Canyon.
5.Ciudad de México
Mexico City (Ciudad de México) is not only the capital of the country and the seat of government, it is one of the country's most popular alternative travel destinations, thanks to its many world-class museums, art galleries, and attractions.
6Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen or the Yucatán capital of Mérida, the magnificent Mayan city of Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico's most visited archaeological sites, as well as one of the biggest and best restored. Highlights of a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site are numerous, from the massive El Castillo - also known as the Pyramid of Kukulkán
7 Guanajuato
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its many old colonial buildings, winding lanes, and narrow alleys, Guanajuato is a city that just begs to be explored on foot. A particularly pleasurable experience is visiting its many plazas, inc
8 Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo
While there's no denying the appeal of Mexico's larger beach resorts, there's much to be said for paying a visit to any one of the country's many smaller vacation destinations. Two of the very best are the town's of Ixtapa and its neighbor, the much smaller former fishing village of Zihuatanejo on the country's Pacific coast.
9.
Famous as the only fortified Mayan settlement located on the coast, the ancient city of Tulum is one of the Yucatán Peninsula's most visited attractions. In the Mayan Riviera and within easy reach of the beaches of Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, the site's well-preserved ruins can be seen for miles around due to their location atop 12-meter high cliffs overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea.
10 Guadalajara
Second, only to Mexico City in size, Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco, has successfully conserved its unique mix of colonial and native Tapatíos influences. Famous for its broad avenues flanked by picturesque parks and fine old buildings notable for their European flair
11 Mérida: Yucatán's White City
The capital of Yucatán, Mérida is one of Mexico's finest old colonial cities an is perfectly located to serve as a base from which to explore the region's many fine Mayan sites, including Chichén Itzá and Tulum. It's an equally popular day trip or overnight stopover from the resorts of the Mayan Riviera.
12 Oaxaca: A Taste of Real Mexico
The capital of the state of the same name, Oaxaca is one of the most popular city destinations for travelers interested in sampling a taste of the real Mexico. An interesting mix of native Indian and Spanish elements, the city has remained largely untouched by the kind of large developments that have sprung up in some of the country's other popular destinations, and as a consequence

10 Best Places to Visit in Mexico - Travel Video
10 BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN MEXICO
Number 10. Cancún and the Mayan Riviera
Lying along a beautiful stretch of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico are the resort destinations of Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and the island of Cozumel, collectively known as the Mayan Riviera. This magnificent area on the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula attracts some five million visitors each year, in the process generating huge tourist revenues. Despite these numbers, you're unlikely to feel like a part of a crowd due to the Riviera's wide beaches and endless crystal-clear water.
Number 9. Puerto Vallarta
Another of Mexico's increasingly popular beach destinations is the Pacific coastal city of Puerto Vallarta. Often shortened to just Vallarta, the city first appeared on the vacation radar in the 1960s as a playground for North America's social elite and has since become extremely popular among foreigners looking for second homes in a sunny, warmer climate. Many parts of it remain untouched by modern development.
Number 8. Cabo San Lucas and the Los Cabos Corridor
At the southern tip of the beautiful Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos-often referred to simply as Cabo-is one of Mexico's top beach destinations.
Number 7. Copper Canyon: Mexico's Grand Canyon
Chihuahua, one of Mexico's most northerly states-it shares a border with New Mexico in the US-is home to one of the country's most visited natural attractions, the stunning Copper Canyon (Barranca del Cobre). Located in a region known as the Sierra Madre Occidental and consisting of a spectacular group of deep canyons, Copper Canyon is in fact larger and deeper than its better known cousin, the Grand Canyon. Taking its name from the distinctive copper green coloring along its steep canyon walls, these amazing natural structures were formed by six rivers that converge in the Rio Fuerte before draining into the Gulf of California.
Number 6. Mexico City's Historic Center
Mexico City (Ciudad de México) is not only the capital of the country and the seat of government; it is one of the country's most popular alternative travel destinations thanks to its many world-class museums, art galleries, and attractions. Don't be put off by its size. Instead, focus your efforts on the historic city center (Centro Histórico de la Ciudad), a 15-square-kilometer UNESCO World Heritage Site boasting more than 1,400 important colonial buildings from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
Number 5. Chichén Itzá: The Mayan Metropolis
A popular day trip for those visiting Cancún and Playa del Carmen or the Yucatán capital of Mérida, the magnificent Mayan city of Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico's most visited archaeological sites, as well as one of the biggest and best restored. Highlights of a visit to this UNESCO World Heritage Site are numerous. A must-see here is the massive El Castillo, also known as the Pyramid of Kukulkán, and at 30 meters high, the site's tallest structure.
Number 4. Playa Del Carmen
Playa Del Carmen, locally known as Playa, is quickly becoming the hippest place in the Yucatán Peninsula; with lively bars, chic cafés, timeshares, and all inclusive resorts opening up all over the city. Playa’s large expat community that has been growing since 1900’s has a significant influence on the local flavor. This international influence is one of the things that make this town so different from the rest of Mexico.
Number 3. Tulum
Tulum features some of the best beaches in Mexico. But sugar sand beaches and turquoise water, is not all that Tulum has going for itself, it is also home to one of the most picturesque ruins in Mexico. The ruins are situated on a tall cliff, on the coast of the Caribbean Sea and are the only archaeological site to have been built overlooking the ocean.
Number 2. Izamal
The city of Izamal has a uniqueness about it that would resonate in your memory forever. Izamal is nicknamed “Ciudad Amarilla” (Yellow City) because every single building in this city is painted yellow. If seeing this bright colonial city doesn’t turn your frown upside down, maybe the ancient Mayan ruins in the middle of the city will. Regardless, this colonial city deserves a visit even if it’s just a day trip from Merida.
Number 1. Acapulco
In the 1950s, before Cancún and Ixtapa, Acapulco used to be the most famous go-to destinations in Mexico. It was the playground of Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, John F. Kennedy and Elvis Presley until a spree of violence tarnished the city’s reputation. However today, the violence has lessened dramatically and Acapulco’s beautiful beaches are once again safe to visit.
Zihuatanejo
Zihuatanejo, or Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, is the fourth-largest city in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Politically the city belongs to the municipality of Zihuatanejo de Azueta in the western part of Guerrero, but both are commonly referred to as Zihuatanejo. It is on the Pacific Coast, about 240 km northwest of Acapulco, and belongs to a section of the Mexican Pacific Coast known as the Costa Grande. This town has been developed as a tourist attraction along with the modern tourist resort of Ixtapa, 5 km away. However, Zihuatanejo has kept its traditional town feel. The town is located on a well-protected bay which is popular with private boat owners during the winter months.
There are two possible origins for the name Zihuatanejo. One origin might be from the Purépecha language meaning “water of the yellow mountain;” another possible origin might be from Nahuatl meaning place of women. Cihuatlán, or place of women, refers to the western paradise of the Nahuatl universe, the home of the “goddess women.” According to tradition, these women arose in the afternoon to lead the sun at dusk to the realm of the dead, Mictlan, to give a dim light to the dead. De Azueta is in honor of José Azueta, who died fighting a U.S. incursion into the country in Veracruz in 1914.

We make a pilgrimage to the famed oracle of Delphi and tour a beautiful medieval monastery. Then it's off to the Peloponnesian Peninsula, where we scope out Nafplion's charming port and visit the epic ruins of King Agamemnon in the ancient capital of Mycenae. Along the way, we investigate local superstitions and sample tangy specialty treats. Tip: Finding great Greek food, traditional and contemporary.

What's Really Happening In Mexico? Day 7 - Part 5 RIVIERA NAYARIT
Hosted by Scott Sheehan
Directed & Produced by Michael Corbiere
I just love getting to see new places, and as luck would have it, the western leg of our lightning tour of Mexico takes us to no fewer than four distinct regions that are wholly new to us: Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, Ixtapa, and, most mysteriously, the Riviera Nayarit.
Well, it turns out that the name refers to the coastline of the state of Nayarit, and that coastline offers the exceedingly upscale resorts of Punta Mita and Nuevo Vallarta, including the Four Seasons Resort, frequented by the rich and famous; and many golf courses, including no less than two designed by Jack Nicklaus himself! It also boasts the charming bohemian town of Sayulita, thats been attracting surfers and vagabonds for many years.
Natural wonders abound here as well, with many species of sea turtles returning here to lay their eggs. The coast is also renowned in birder circles as being one of the top spots in the Americas to see an astonishing assortment of our feathered friends, including the elusive Blue-Footed Booby!
The tiny island town of Mexcaltitan, found further up the coast in a large lagoon, is thought to be the mythical land of Aztlan, where the Aztecs were shown a vision of an eagle clutching a snake in its talons while perched upon a nopales cactus. 7 tribes set out across the country, searching for this sign that would tell them where to found a new city. One of those tribes did come upon this scene (that is now the coat of arms on Mexicos flag) in the spot that would one day become Mexico City. So the entire Aztec empire was really born here in a vision!
Were off to Ixtapa tomorrow! Come back and see whats going on there
