Vigan Dancing Fountain - Ilocos Sur
Historical Plaza Salcedo Turns into a Spectacle of Lights at Night...
Every seven in the evening, locals and tourists staying in Vigan quickly make their way to the most popular park in the city to visit a lights-and-sound spectacle you would not want to miss– the Dancing Fountain right at the center of Plaza Salcedo in Vigan!
Named after the Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo, Plaza Salcedo is both the city’s central attraction as well as its town center.
Much like any old Spanish settlement, Plaza Salcedo is surrounded by all of the places you’ll need to visit in Vigan: the town hall, regional hall, local shopping center, and the church. Now, it is also surrounded by fast food diners, making it every Vigan visitors’ go-to place.
It was supposed to have 4 sunken gardens which would represent the four seasons experienced in the Western countries: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. The lagoon, where the fountains are located, was built in 1970 and serves as a reservoir in response to what was then a turmoil-filled Vigan City.
One of the most significant events to happen at Plaza Salcedo was the execution of Gabriela Silang by public hanging in September 1973. Gabriela Silang was the first woman leader of the Philippine revolution to fight against Spain.
Moreover, at the middle of the park is the 17th-century monument of Juan de Salcedo, the oldest of its kind in Northern Luzon.
The dancing fountains start at 7 every night, taking place every 30 minutes. On weekends, a second show is held at 8:30 pm.
Photographers also love Plaza Salcedo as it makes a great foreground for when they take photos of the Vigan Cathedral, originally called the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, originally built in 1574 as a chapel, which was then replaced as a church in 1641 and was rebuilt in the 1800s.
The Dancing Lights of Vigan is located at Plaza Salcedo, where they hold it every night. There’s no entrance fee, so better go early as the place is jam packed before the show starts at around 7pm. We were a bit late but still lucky to find a place right at the edge of the fountain area. Scout a higher spot for best viewing experience.
The 30 minute show consists of laser lights, music, led light show and fountains all computer controlled. Don’t miss it and there is no charge. One show at 7:30 pm.
A must on your visit to Vigan City, Luzon, Philippines.
Plaza Salcedo
Filipinos have a tradition of first paying respect in the church of the place they are visiting for the first time to ensure a safe stay and travel back home. In Vigan’s case, visitors may visit the Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Having fulfilled this local tradition, one may now go down to the business of playing tourist just right after literally stepping out of this ancient place of worship.
Right in front of the Saint Paul Cathedral is the Plaza Salcedo, named after the Spanish conqueror, Juan de Salcedo who subdued the early native settlement in Vigan and established upon it Villa Fernandina for the monarchs of Spain in 1572. With this, Juan de Salcedo founded the third of many Hispanic settlements in the Philippines.
To honor this Spanish conquistador, a monument was erected in the city square, surrounded by all the important edifices of the town. From Plaza Salcedo, one can see and walk leisurely to not only the Saint Paul Cathedral but the Arzobispado or Archbishop’s Palace, the Vigan City Hall and the Ilocos Sur Capitol as well. All were seats of power over life and death in the olden times, and now places of tourist interest, too. In Salcedo Plaza, visitors will find the Salcedo Obelisk which was placed in the elevated plaza during the 17th century as the plaza’s centerpiece. It is literally the focal point of the city’s Spanish urban design.
Visitors will also find in Plaza Salcedo a garden where one will see a diorama of the world’s man-made wonders like London’s Big Ben, Moscow’s St. Basil Basilica and Paris’ Eiffel Tower. A miniature of Vigan’s heritage site was also included by Governor Deogracias Savellano in the world diorama to stress upon the viewers the importance of the Heritage Village and its valuable contribution to the cultural heritage of the world.
Salcedo Plaza is best visited early morning or late afternoon to avoid the hot sun at its strongest and to fully enjoy the quieter atmosphere of this elliptical plaza with its cooling fountain display. The plaza’s lagoon was added in the seventies to store water. The city saw this as a creative solution to the need for water during times when fire occurs in the city. Vigan has suffered destructive fires many times in its history.
It is also important to note that Plaza Salcedo was the site of the execution of Gabriela Silang in September of 1763. The first woman leader of the Philippine revolution was publicly hanged there to serve as a warning to the restive populace.

Vigan City Trip 2019
Vigan is a city in the Philippines, on the west coast of Luzon island. It's known for its preserved Spanish colonial and Asian architecture. Calle Crisologo dominates the Mestizo district, with its cobblestone streets, malecón, horse-drawn carriages and rustic mansions. Near the white baroque Vigan Cathedral are Plaza Salcedo, offering fountain light shows, and Plaza Burgos, known for its street-food stalls.
Vigan is the most intact example in Asia of a planned Spanish colonial town, established in the 16th century. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines and from China with those of Europe and Mexico to create a unique culture and townscape without parallels anywhere in East and South-East Asia. An important trading post before the colonial era, Vigan is located at the river delta of Abra River, along the northwestern coastline of the main island of Luzon, in the Province of Ilocos Sur, Philippine Archipelago. The total area of the inscribed property is 17.25 hectares. The traditional Hispanic checkerboard street plan opens up into two adjacent plazas. The Plaza Salcedo is the longer arm of an L-shaped open space, with the Plaza Burgos as the shorter. The two plazas are dominated by the St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the City Hall and the Provincial Capitol Building . The urban plan of the town closely conforms with the Renaissance grid plan specified in the Ley de la Indias for all new towns in the Spanish Empire. There is, however, a noticeable difference between Vigan and contemporary Spanish colonial towns in Latin America in the Historic Core (known as the Mestizo district), where the Latin tradition is tempered by strong Chinese, Ilocano, and Filipino influences. As its name implies, this district was settled by affluent families of mixed Chinese-Ilocano origin. The area contains the historic footprint of the entire town and consists of a total of 233historic buildings tightly strung along a grid of 25 streets.
The two storey structures are built of brick and wood, with a steeply pitched roof reminiscent of traditional Chinese architecture. The exterior walls of the upper storey are enclosed by window panels of kapis shells framed in wood which can be slid back for better ventilation. Most of the existing buildings were probably built in the mid 18th to late 19th centuries. Due to the economic decline of Vigan as an economic center after the World War II, only a few of the historic buildings had internal reorganization for alternative use. The Chinese merchants and traders conducted their business from shops, offices and storerooms on the ground floors of their houses, with the living quarters above. In addition to the domestic and commercial architecture, Vigan possesses a number of significant public buildings, which also show multi-cultural influences.
Vigan is unique for having preserved much of its Hispanic colonial character, particularly its grid street pattern and historic urban lay out. Its significance also lies on how the different architectural influences are blended to create a homogenous townscape.

Inside the palace, the Museo Nueva Segovia contains religious relics from various churches in the region. Formerly the home of the Crisologos, a powerful political family, the Crisologo Museum displays personal memorabilia and period furnishings. A branch of the National Museum, Padre Burgos House features regional artifacts and artworks, including a series of paintings of the 1807 Basi Revolt against the Spanish.
