Gaziantep
Zeugma Mosaic Museum, in the town of Gaziantep, Turkey, is the biggest mosaic museum on the world, containing 1700m2 of mosaics. It opened to the public on 9 September 2011.
The museum's mosaics are focused on Zeugma, thought to have been founded by a general in Alexander the Great's army. The treasures, including the mosaics, remained relatively unknown until 2000 when artifacts appeared in museums and when plans for new dams on the Euphrates meant that much of Zeugma would be forever flooded.A large number of the mosaics still remain uncovered and teams of researchers continue to work on the project. The 90,000-square-foot museum features a 7,500-square-foot exhibition hall and replaces the Bardo National Museum in Tunis as the world's largest mosaic museum.

Exploring the Antalya Archaeology Museum in Turkey
Not your typical museum - the Antalya Archaeology Museum along the Turkish Riviera showcases a wonderful selection of artifacts, ornate tombs and gorgeous marbles from the middle Roman period (2nd and 3rd century AD).
Perhaps one of the most striking figures is the beautifully displayed statue of Heracles.
Though not shown in this video, the museum also has a mixture of historic pottery and similar artifacts, a collection of ancient coins, and beautifully preserved early Christian artwork in addition to rugs and period clothing.
You can find the museum website here:
You can find my video about the city of Antalya here: and as always see photos from the visit and learn the stories behind it on my blog,

PCHC: Contested Heritage: Archaeology Museums in Turkey
Turkey will soon be home to a series of new, state-of-the-art, archaeology museums. Such buildings are being planned, constructed, remodeled, or expanded in Istanbul, Ankara, Gaziantep, and other places. What kind of cultural heritage will these new museums display? These secular temples of the Turkish Republic have generally emphasized the country's 10,000-year-old past. In this historical narrative, different Turkish cities usually trace their roots back to the Neolithic. But, what other stories are left out of this narrative? How have these new museums attempted to display these silenced stories? In this talk, Dr. Dissard takes Turkey as a specific case-study to argue that contested heritage seldom feels at home in archaeological museums.
2200 Year Old Magnificent Mosaics! ZEUGMA MOSAIC MUSEUM (Gaziantep/Turkey)
The second largest mosaic museum in the world is in Gaziantep, Turkey: Zeugma Mosaic Museum.
Zeugma was a city once home to nearly 80,000 inhabitants.
In terms of the floor area of the museum, as well as the surface area of the mosaics exhibited, it is the second largest of its kind in the world. (The largest mosaic museum also is in Turkey). The outstanding artistic quality of the main exhibits, as well as the collections of Late Antiquity Church Mosaics and Early Chaldean and Christian iconography, attracts visitors to the museum.

Stunning 2200-Year-Old Mosaics Discovered in Ancient Greek City Of Zeugma
Three new mosaics were recently discovered in the ancient Greek city of Zeugma, which is located in the present-day province of Gaziantep in southern Turkey. The incredibly well-preserved mosaics date back to 2nd century BC.
Zeugma was considered one of the most important centers of the Eastern Roman Empire and the ancient city has provided a treasure trove of discoveries with 2000-3000 houses in remarkably good condition. Excavations at Zeugma started in 2007 and continue to this day.
Up until 2000 the ancient city was completely submerged underwater until a project to excavate the area received funding from a number of sources. There are still many areas of Zeugma—a city once home to nearly 80,000 inhabitants—left to excavate, including 25 houses still underwater. It’s exciting to think of what other discoveries remain to be found.

Excavations reveal history in Gaziantep
Archaeological excavations have been ongoing in four different spots in the southeastern province of Gaziantep, which is one of the oldest settlements in the world.
Italian Nicolo Marchetti is the head of the Karkamış excavations while German Engelbert Winter leads the Dülük excavations. Meanwhile, American David Scholen is leading work in Zincirli Höyük and Turkish Ankara University Professor Kutalmış Görkay is the leader of the ancient city of Zeugma’s excavations.
The highlights of the excavations include the Gypsy Girl mosaic, unearthed in Zeugma, which dates back to 300 B.C. and the biggest stela (a stone or wooden slab erected as a commemorative monument) of the Babylon King Nebuchadnezzar, which was found in Karkamış and dates back to 3,300 B.C.
In the ancient city of Dülük, with settlements dating back to 6,000 B.C., stela and temple remains were unearthed. Ruins of historic buildings and the walls and foundation of a palace were among the findings unearthed in the 5,000-year-old Zincirli mound.
The Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Ergun Özuslu said Gaziantep and its vicinity were extremely rich in terms of archaeology.
“Works in environmental arrangement have continued to open these historic places to tourism. The archaeopark work in Karkamış will end this year. Excavations continue non-stop in the temple area of Dülük. These successful excavations reveal the history of the southeastern region,” he said.
Özuslu said they tried to establish new fields to meet the needs of tourists, as all the ancient areas in the city would open to tourism.
He said that they also focused on promotional work, via brochures and websites, where they “promote [Turkey’s] richness in national and international fairs.”
Noting that the number of local and foreign tourists was rising every year, Özuslu said more than 442,000 people visited Gaziantep last year.
“The Gaziantep Mosaic Museum was visited by 206,256 people last year. Thirty thousand more people visited the museum compared to the previous year. We expect this figure to reach 250,000. Our purpose is to promote the richness of the city to more people,” he added.
He said that renovations in the Gaziantep Archaeology Museum would be finished by the end of the year, and the museum would open to tourists again.
