Sir Paul Smith's architecture tour of Nottingham
This feature was made for BBC East Midlands Today. I shot it with a cameraman between 3 and 4pm and it needed to be on air at 6.30. We shot several scenes with Sir Paul and myself walking and talking. But in the short time I had to edit I realised these scenes were getting in the way of the story. So I edited every out scene with me in, apart from the last one with me running up some steps which I needed. That day I realised that is the story is powerful enough, and shot correctly, there is no need for a presenter. A worrying conclusion for a television presenter to come to!

20101223 Eco-theory and practice in Nottingham
The question of how to build homes that are sustainable and energy-saving has moved to the top of the academic agenda. In the latest in our series of feature reports from the United Kingdom, we visit the experimental low-energy housing estate, in Nottingham University. The collection of houses are designed, built, improved, and lived in by the research team.
( Green home with lab in the roof )
Here in the University of Nottingham, in the east midlands of the United Kingdom, on the attractive campus, you can see a row of ordinary looking houses. But instead of a cosy interior, you will find a laboratory for architecture students.
It shouldn't be, because the one that is leaking is this part, which has... but there is here..
Nottingham University Architecture Dept., Prof. Mark Gillot : This is a lab that we have above the house, so one thing that we're doing is live projects, so, we want people to live in the house so we can see how the house performs, but we don't want to interrupt them and inconvenience them, so we actually do all our monitoring in a different room from the house. This is above the house.
( Ventilation heat recovery )
Because I've reset it three times, because it didn't do that. So which one is this? Is this going up to the... So that actually goes back into the house.
Nottingham University Architecture Dept., Prof. Mark Gillot : One of things we're looking at is ventilation heat recovery, so we're looking at how we can provide energy efficient ventilation, within the house itself, but we have observed that the system could potentially work more efficiently, and so what the students are doing, is trying to understand how efficient the system is, and where it could be made more efficient.
In Britain, architects have to scratch their heads about how ventilate a home, without opening the windows and letting out the warmth in winter.
This clever heat recovery system, sucks in cold air from the outside, and exchanges it with warm air from the inside, through an electric motor, so its heat warms up the incoming cold air. Ventilation is maintained, but the indoor air temperature does not drop too dramatically. Efficient heat recovery cuts energy consumption to a minimum.
( Putting theory into practice )
There's no ... on this one. Is there no insulation there? There's no insulation underneath it. Yeap. So, actually, that's why it's leaking. So it is. Yeap, that's why I used this stuff. Yeah, yeah.
The students keep records, run tests, and make observations and adjustments. In Britain, energy saving and sustainable construction are not just academic pursuits, but real applications to be put into practice - which is what attracted this Italian PhD student to Nottingham.
University of Nottingham student, Vittorino Helpoliti : As a visiting PhD student, actually to practice and to experiment something that in our places we would just study theoretically, so in a way, this is the sweet part of being a PhD student in Nottingham, where there is a lot of experimentation, actually finding out how things do really perform, in terms of ... behaviors.
From building it to living inside it, the students are not just the architects, but the occupants of this low carbon house. The hands-on experience helps them test the feasibility of the latest energy-saving innovations.
University of Nottingham deptartment head, Tim Heath : Sustainability and a consideration of the environment should end up in all of our teaching, and the students then got involved in the design process and the construction process, so they actually got hands-on experience, which meant that they had a much fuller understanding of the sustainable aspects of that particular project.
( Putting theory into practice )
Inside the classroom, the students sit together in group discussions. Outside, they put their theories into practice. Like a factory of ideas, the university is turning out the next generation of low carbon architects.
Phillack Church
Standing on the side of a hill overlooking the town of Hayle, Phillack Church is a very gothic-looking parish church which was largely rebuilt between 1856 and 1857 by English architect William White who was the architect behind the building and rebuilding of many churches in the British Isles, as well as three churches in South Africa and one in Madagascar.
Before the Victorian rebuilding of the church, which is dedicated to SS. Felicitas & Piala, the church building dated from the 12th century with the tower dating from the 15th. However, this site has long been a religious site. This is proven by the rare Chi-Rho Stone, now built in to a porch, which shows that this was an important site in very early Christian times. There are also two Medieval crosses in the churchyard dating from the same date and an inscribed stone which may be a re-used Bronze Age menhir.
Bestwood Lodge, Nottingham. Gothic masterpiece filmed from the air.
One of my regular stopover hotels, Bestwood Lodge is definitely one of the most dramatic in appearance.
History relates that Bestwood Lodge was once a Royal residence, much
used for hunting purposes. King Edward III issued letters patent,
dated “at his Park at Bestwood” in 1364 and earlier still, Henry I
granted to the Priory of Lenton permission to have “the right of
having two carts to fetch deadwood and heath daily out of the Royal
Forest of Bestwood”
In nearly every reign it is possible to find some reference to the
Royal Hunting Lodge at Bestwood. Edward IV stayed at Nottingham
Castle for three weeks from 1st October 1469 and availed himself of
the joys of hunting in Bestwood while in residence at the Castle.
Nottingham Castle was Richard III’s ‘Castle of Care’ and he too
enjoyed hunting at Bestwood whenever he was in residence, his last
visit was on Tuesday August 16th 1485 when he rode out with a few
friends to visit the Lodge.
The original house was demolished in 1860 to make way for a large
house in domestic Gothic style, with red brick and white stone
facings. This Lodge was finished in 1863.
My thanks to Simon and Aprile...
