Chicago ( (listen), locally also ), officially the City of Chicago, is the third most populous city in the United States. As of the 2017 census-estimate, Chicago has a population of 2,716,450, which makes it the most populous city in both the state of Illinois and the Midwestern United States. It is the county seat of Cook County, the second most populous county in the United States. Chicago is the principal city of the Chicago metropolitan area, which is often referred to as Chicagoland. The Chicago metropolitan area has nearly 10 million people, is the third-largest in the United States, the fourth largest in North America, and the third largest metropolitan area in the world by land area.
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed and grew rapidly in the mid-nineteenth century. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, and by 1900 Chicago was one of the five largest cities in the world. During this period, Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, including new construction styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement, and the steel-framed skyscraper.Chicago is an international hub for finance, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It was the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts at the Chicago Board of Trade, which today is the largest and most diverse derivatives market in the world, generating 20% of all volume in commodities and financial futures. O'Hare International Airport is the one of the busiest airports in the world, and the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and railroad freight. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and it ranked seventh in the entire world in the 2017 Global Cities Index. Chicago has the fourth-largest gross metropolitan product in the world—generating about $670.5 billion according to September 2017 estimates—ranking it after the metropolitan areas of Tokyo, New York City, and Los Angeles, and ranking ahead of number five London and number six ...

Chicago has the fourth-largest gross metropolitan product in the world—generating about $670.5 billion according to September 2017 estimates—ranking it after the metropolitan areas of Tokyo, New York City, and Los Angeles, and ranking ahead of number five London and number six Paris. What do Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington have in common? Well, aside from the fact that they were all U.S. Presidents, they were also land surveyors! We'll learn all about that and more at the National Museum of Surveying in downtown Springfield, Illinois. Next, we'll meet Chet Turner from Neoga, Illinois. He's the only person who commercially builds the Y-Flyer sailboat. And in Sadorus, Illinois, the crew visits the National Museum of Ship Models and Sea History.
Rebel Architecture: How to Dismantle Power Through Design
In our cities today, the built environment appears simultaneously immutable and precarious — immutable because it replicates entrenched power structures and precarious because, no matter one’s claim on space, destruction and displacement seem inevitable. Together, we will think through the ways exclusion is inscribed onto urban spaces through planning, design, and architecture. Then we will demonstrate ways we can — and do — counteract these prescribed meanings through alternate, collective, and collaborative forms, as well as through active resistance.

In Practice: Alumni Symposium | A Sydney Gross Symposium
The event brings together alumni from architecture, urban planning and real estate development, to discuss different forms of practice that they are engaging in.
The speakers have all graduated from one of the programs offered at the School of Architecture and Planning in the past 10 years, and each has taken a distinctive path since. The symposium offers current students and other members of the School and community an opportunity to consider modes of practice within the realms of architecture and planning and at the intersection with other disciplines.
Individual presentations by each of the speakers will be followed by a general Q+A session as well as smaller group conversations directed by current students.
Participants
- Gabrielle Printz, Co-founder, feminist architecture collaborative (March '14)
- Maciej Kaczynski, Project Leader, Studio Gang (BS Arch '06)
- Quardean Lewis-Allen, Founder and CEO, Made in Brownsville (BS Arch '09)
- Daniel Crowther, Project Manager, TM Montante Development (MSRED '16, BAED '15)
- Caitlin Donovan, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (MUP '11, BAED '09)
- Rebecca Yanus, Director of Planning and Development, City of Dunkirk, NY (MUP '15, BAED '13)
Sydney Gross Memorial Fund
This symposium is supported by the Sydney Gross Memorial Fund in honor of former UB architecture student Sydney Gross. The fund supports scholarships and an annual special event bringing leading practitioners to the school to speak.
DISCURSIVE PRACTICES presents the work of architects, urban planners, preservationists and historians whose approach to design bridges multiple territories of knowledge to create new work.
Their provocations operate on discourses that simultaneously have long historical traditions and are actively evolving in the present. By acknowledging and engaging with the cultural and institutional basis of inherited knowledge systems, these speakers challenge reductive modes of analysis and reveal openings for expanding the social reach and relevance of contemporary design.
AIA and AICP continuing education credits are available.

Black In Design: Opening Keynote, Hamza Walker
The Black in Design Conference, organized by the Harvard University Graduate School of Design African American Student Union (GSD AASU) recognizes the contributions of the African diaspora to the design fields and promotes discourse around the agency of the design profession to address and dismantle the institutional barriers faced by our communities.
Building upon the Black in Design Conference in 2015, we are framing the upcoming conference across the forms of design, to unearth our agency as designers to envision more radical and equitable futures. We revealed the boundless capacity and power of a network of black and brown designers that we intend to grow through the 2017 Black in Design Conference: Designing Resistance, Building Coalitions.
While the political climate we face today is tenuous, the forces of systemic injustice are not new. We will explore design as resistance and show how designers are advocates and activists. We will highlight the contributions made by leaders across nontraditional fields in creating spaces for actions and representations of resistance. Through this exploration, we will broaden the definition of design, understanding it through the lens of these visionaries in their work.
Design is activism
Design is coalition building
