Longyearbyen | Svalbard | coal on cables, Norwegian Arctic, exploration,
Longyearbyen, (pronounced 'lungyer-byn'), is the largest populated area and the capital of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago.
Understand[edit]
part of a huge system for transporting coal on cables
Longyearbyen is the largest populated area on the territory of Svalbard, located in the high Norwegian Arctic. The settlement is popular as the most easily accessed frontier in the Arctic, and is an ideal base for the greater exploration of Svalbard.
The settlement is named after American entrepreneur John Munro Longyear (1850-1922), who as head of the Arctic Coal Company founded the town and the neighboring coal mine, the first large mine on Svalbard. Mining is still a big business here, with the roadsides and mountainsides littered with mines and their equipment, but tourism is catching up fast.
With over 2000 inhabitants, the town is the de facto capital of the islands, featuring the airport, a school, a shopping center, hotels, restaurants, and more. There are many possibilities for walking and sight-seeing in the immediate Longyearbyen area. Walking out of the settlement into the fjord, you will see the old cemetary and several abandoned mine buildings.

Spitsbergen Airship Museum. Displays materials and ephemera from the era of polar exploration using dirigibles and other aircraft, mainly by Norwegians, Italians and American explorers.
Svalbard Gallery, Nybyen. Permanent and changing exhibitions by artists in Svalbard, entry 45 kr. The adjoining artists' workshops are free to visit.
Inside the museum
Svalbard Museum, Svalbard Science Centre (at the end of the main street). Reopened 2006 in large new premises, it features many displays about the human history of the archipelago, especially whaling and mining, as well as various exhibits about arctic flora and fauna.
Longyearbyen Church
Church, above town. The world's northernmost church. Always open, and has coffee and cookies for the visitors. Also sells postcards, books, etc--just leave the money in a bowl.
Reindeer in the city
Animals. Reindeers roam free in the city. You can also see polar foxes and birds.
24-hour sundial
24-Hour Sundial. Not big (about 1 meter high), but it does 24 hours a day in the summer. It's located about 400 m north-east of the church. From the church, follow the road NE toward the water until the road turns 90° left. The sundial is off on the right side of the road just past the turn. edit

SVALBARD Museum + NORTH POLE Museum = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
Norway on a Budget #4
Longyearbyen world's northernmost town in the Svalbard Islands archipelago has two museums to display an extensive insight into the local geography, history and geology.
The Svalbard Museum showcases how this historically rich area of resources and animal hunting, resulted in the unique 1920 Svalbard Treaty. This international agreement ceded ownership of these islands to Norway though with special migration and taxation provisions.
Across the street, the more specific North Pole Expedition Museum contains many artifacts, newspapers and histories about the early days of Polar expeditions. The museum also details the efforts of the 1928 Search and Rescue that, to date, has been the largest Arctic Search and Rescue mission, even 90 years later.

Each journey is of course marked even in a better scope with the people and stories. So those are what I want to share with you in the channel. Hope it can bring interesting perspective either for you as a traveler or for information.

The Longyear City is the northernmost settlement of 1000+ people on the planet. Located 78 degrees north on the frozen archipelago of Svalbard, this Norwegian town lives comfortably between the high-arctic mountains in nearly complete isolation.

Longyearbyen, Svalbard | Polar Night in the Arctic Circle
Located deep in the arctic circle on the Island of Svalbard, is the city Longyearbyen. At a latitude of 78º N, Longyearbyen is the
northernmost settlement on the planet (with permanent residents). Since our trip took place from 11/27/2015 - 12/1/2015 we experienced 'Polar Night', meaning that at our latitude the sun was always lower than 12° below the horizon...in other words it was ALWAYS dark. (In Longyearbyen this lasts from November through mid-January)
Even though you expect this going in, there is nothing you can do to prepare yourself for the disorienting feeling of complete darkness at noon. Quite an experience.
I wrote up a full day to day blog about the trip...check it out at :

SVALBARD: Hiking in the Arctic city of Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen
Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen) is an archipelago in the arctic ocean. We visited this amazing place during our Scandinavian backpacking trip in the fall of 2016. We stayed in Longyearbyen, the northernmost city in the world! We hiked Sarkofagen and the longyearbeen glacier.

Whole Hurtigruten MS Spitsbergen cruise review: The Ultimate Svalbard Expedition (HD) - Polar Bears!
Video review of the Hurtigruten Expedition Cruise „The ultimate Svalbard Expedition“ with Hurtigruten MS Spitsbergen in July 2018.
In this video you’ll see the daily program onboard of MS Spitsbergen during our expedition cruise around Svalbard. See what kind of activities they offer. Enjoy beautiful pictures of the nature and landscape of Svalbard as well as footage of polar bear families. Unfortunately the polar bears were very far away (between 800 - 1500 meters). Therefore please excuse the picture noise in the video.
You’ll also see all ship areas like restaurant, explorer lounge, bar, jacuzzi, sauna, fitness room, shop, the outdoor explorer deck, the bridge and our room. We had a „O2 Polar Outside Cabin“.
