'Off Grid' in Arctic Sweden: The Dag Hammarskjöldleden, Nikkaluokta to Abisko
Read our blog of this trek here:
The Dag Hammarskjöldleden (Dag Hammarskjöld Way) is a 105 kilometre trekking route in Arctic Sweden. Named after Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld, a Swedish diplomat and philosopher who tragically died in a plane crash in 1961, it begins at Abisko and ends at Nikkaluokta. The Abisko to Singi section follows the same route as the very popular Kungsleden (The King's Way). We did this trail in reverse beginning at Nikkaloukta and ending at Abisko, as this tallied well with our public transport plans to and from Kiruna. Going this way carrying heavy packs meant a less punishing gradient up to the highest point on the route at the Tjäktja Pass (1,150 m). Dag Hammarskjöldleden is well-served with mountain huts and there are endless opportunities for truly excellent wild camping. The scenery of glaciated mountains, lakes, alpine tundra, rushing rivers and birch forest is utterly epic, making this one of the best easily accessible multi-day routes in Arctic Sweden.

Aurora peeking through the clouds at the Aurora Sky Station. Opening weekend for 2013-20014 season was just spectacular. More than often when clouds and fog appear from the base the sky station can still provide a great show.
Arctic Sweden - June, 2016
This was nice. Early in the season meant a lot of snow still left in the mountains, but also lesser crowds and of course, the midnight sun.
The whole trip was from 10. June - 1. July and summed around 300km en route Abisko - Kebnekaise - Nikkaluokta - Kebnekaise - Hukejaure - Ritsem - Saltoluokta - Kvikkjokk. Read more about the hike at hhhoel.blogspot.com
Thank you Merilin, Fabian, Michael, Erik, Johanna, Niklas, Fredrik and Samuel for making this trip a lot more than what I planned for.

8 Hidden places in Sweden Even the Swedes Don’t Know About. Enjoy a new experience in these places.
Hidden places in Sweden Even the Swedes Don’t Know About.
Sweden is more than just Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. In fact, a good portion of Sweden is unpopulated, which means there are vast swathes of unspoiled nature. While the further you go north the fewer people you’ll find, the southern areas also have their own special treats. Here are the 8 best-hidden spots in the country.
1. Blekinge.
Welcome to Blekinge! It's a little enchanting and beautiful destination with surprisingly close to all destinations. Enjoy islands hopping, sunbathing on archipelago cliffs, sandy beaches, lakes, wilderness and the thick forest with bright green meadows. Did you know that the sun also shines a little more hours than other places in Sweden? Well, that makes your stay even better. Explore the historic naval base; it's a part of the maritime world heritage. Taste the locally produced food, experience music, arts, crafts and family things to do.
2. Jokkmokk.
Way up in the north of Sweden, above the Arctic Circle, you’ll find Jokkmokk, where Sweden’s indigenous Sami people have roamed the vast expanses of Lapland for centuries and where you’ll find the World Heritage site Laponia. Thousands upon thousands of trails make the area perfect for hiking, while the small town is known for its Winter Market, where you can shop for Sami handicrafts, or enjoy the local food and music. Also make sure to check out the Jokkmokk Alpine Garden, which is bursting with alpine plants.
3. Delsjön.
Delsjön consists of two coherent lakes, Stora Delsjön, and Lilla Delsjön, located in eastern Gothenburg, in the Delsjöområdet nature reserve. They serve as a reservoir for the city, receiving water from the Göta River. At the shore of Stora Delsjön, there is a popular beach. The Delsjö area is home to a nature reserve, big lakes, and stunning woodland. A very short trip from the city center, this is where you go to calm down in nature for a walk, swim or a canoe trip. The lake Stora Delsjön offers a big beach and you can also swim from rocks and bathing platforms. If you're sporty fellow hiking trails and jogging tracks starts from the Skatås fitness center.
4. Tree Hotel.
Living in a tree house is the dream of many a child but in Harads, Sweden you’ll find Tree Hotel, a grown-up version that will blow your childhood fantasies away. Inspired by the 2008 Swedish documentary The Tree Lover, the village of treehouses are suspended four to six meters in the air and each one is unique. From the reflective room to the UFO treehouse, most rooms sleep four to six people and are designed to not just reflect nature but to be fully integrated into it.
5. Kebnekaise.
Part of the Scandinavian Mountains, Kebnekaise is Sweden’s highest mountain, with two peaks. The southern one, which is glaciated, stands at 2 097.5 meters above sea level, while the northern peak, which is ice-free, is just a smidgen shorter, at 2 096.8 meters. The mountain is close to Kiruna and Kungsleden, the hiking trails that run between Abisko and Nikkaloukta. Due to some very inclement weather, a warmer weather visit is recommended and the glacier should be avoided for those who don’t have experience with mountain ice – fatal falls are not unheard of.
6. Kalmar Castle.
Kalmar Castle is found in the town of Kalmar in the ancient province of Småland, which has been inhabited for more than 800 years. Built over the course of more than a decade in the 13th century, the castle was rebuilt in its current design in the 16th century and is considered one of the most significant examples of northern European fortifications in the Renaissance. Archeologists have found traces of ancient burials from the Stone Age, some of which are on display in the castle.
7. Fulufjället National Park.
Fulufjället National Park is a virtually untouched nature area in the southern part of the mountain range. The mountain rises in the landscape as a plateau that has steep sides and is flat on top. No reindeer graze here, so the mountain heath is covered with a thick carpet of lichen. The Njupeskär waterfall is the highest in Sweden, cascading a total of 93 meters with a free fall of 70 meters. For thousands of years, the water has chiseled out a deep canyon. Most of the visitors come to see it. From the top of the falls, you have a fantastic view of the canyon and the landscape.
8. Luleå.
Luleå is the heart of northern Sweden with big city amenities and small-town neighborhood. A real winter wonderland with white expanses and a summery island city that tops the sun league tables year after year. Luleå combines the fascinating nature with culture, shopping, entertainment, good accommodation, and good service.

Kebnekaise (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈkɛbnəˈkaisə];[3] from Sami Giebmegáisi or Giebnegáisi, Cauldron Crest) is the highest mountain in Sweden. The Kebnekaise massif, which is part of the Scandinavian Mountains, has two main peaks, of which the southern, glaciated one is highest at 2,097.5 metres (6,882 ft) above sea level as of August 2014. The northern peak is 2,096.8 metres (6,879 ft) and free of ice.[1] Kebnekaise lies in Sapmi, about 150 kilometres (93 mi) north of the Arctic Circle and west of Kiruna near the Kungsleden hiking trail between Abisko and Hemavan.
Due to the shrinkage of the glacier surrounding the southern peak, it is possible the northern peak will assume the title of the highest point in Sweden; as of Summer 2016 the difference in altitude was just one foot.[4] By August of 2018, because of record heat, enough of the glacier on the southern peak had melted so that the northern peak is now the highest.[5] However it is likely the height of the southern peak will increase in the winter so that it may regain its title as the highest peak.
