On a trip to Iceland with Chris Burkard I was fortunate to witness the cold water surfers from Under an Arctic Sky on a week long photography workshop. Flying the drone over these arctic surfers was incredible to watch.

An Arctic Surf Story: Surfing Iceland's Winter Solstice
Surfing the Arctic circle was easily the craziest two weeks of my life. Two of us embarked on this 15 day expedition, we entered Iceland in high winter. The trip was aligned exactly 1 week before, and one week after the winter solstice, meaning these were the coldest and darkest two weeks in the Northern Hemisphere. We were expecting to face ice cold water and harsh conditions, but upon arrival it was immediately apparent that we were not prepared for the brutality of the Icelandic surf. We had set out unequipped and ill-prepared to surf some of the most barren, remote, and hostile waters we could have imagined. With water temperatures regularly below the freezing point, consistently hovering around minus 15 degrees Celsius accounting for wind chill, and beaches covered with layers of thick snow, the extent of our challenge was profoundly confronting.
Having only entered mild hypothermia a few times, the trip was the coldest, roughest, most insane, and most rewarding idea we have ever had.

Winter in Iceland can be interesting. Surfing is something you can actually do at this time of the year. It's an extreme sport fit for experienced surfers who are willing to plunge in ice-cold water. For the less adventurous people, there are other reasons that you must visit Iceland in winter.
Winter In Iceland: A Reality Check
Icelandic winters are too cold - this is a common misconception of tourists who have never been to Iceland. In reality however, Icelandic winters are mild considering its spot on the map. The southern lowlands tend to have the mildest climate with temperatures averaging at 0 degrees Celsius. Northerly regions are the coldest at around -25 to -30 degrees. High-altitude places in Iceland are usually -15 to -20 degrees cooler than northern Iceland. The lowest temperature ever recorded on the history book while it is winter in Iceland was around -40 degrees Celsius.
Why Visit Iceland In Winter?
1. Winter in Iceland is not that cold. The country only got its misleading name after Norwegian Floki Vilgeroarson found ice when he landed in northern Iceland. The Gulf Stream allows Iceland to enjoy a warmer climate compared to countries in the same latitude. Winter in Iceland is pretty much like winter in Amsterdam and New York in terms of temperature.
2. Less tourists. Iceland gets a lot of tourists throughout the year except during winter when the number of people visiting the country drops to half. Even the most popular Icelandic tourist spots like the Blue Lagoon of Iceland gets no more than a handful of guests. Moreover, you will have an easier time finding accommodations, riding transportation, and booking last-minute tours. The only exception is Reykjavik which gets a lot of local Icelanders as tourists.
3. Traveling to Iceland in winter is cheaper. Since it's the opposite of peak travel season, the cost of tours and accommodations tend to be cheaper. Economy in Iceland is also recovering from its recent collapse, giving you the opportunity to find better deals during winter.
4. Nightlife. Iceland only gets 6 hours of sunlight, leaving 18 hours to the night. Nightlife is happening throughout the year but it peaks at winter in Iceland, especially around December when universities are on their semester break.
5. See the Northern Lights. Also known as Aurora Borealis, this remarkable natural phenomenon can be witnessed only when it is winter in Iceland. Catching one may be a hit-or-miss experience but your best bet is to watch the sky on a clear and cloudless winter night. Be mesmerized by this spectacular dance of light during Icelandic winters. There is no other time of the year to see it.
6. Excellent sunrise and sunset photo opportunities. When it's winter in Iceland, the sun never goes higher than the horizon. What happens is that the sky appears as if it were stuck in an endless sunrise or sunset depending on the time of the day. This provides you with excellent photo opportunities, especially if you're into photography.
7. Enjoy summer activities.That's right. You read it correctly. Even if it's winter in Iceland, you can still get some summer fun. You can still spot some whales, see volcanoes, and climb glaciers among other things.
8. Surfing in Iceland. Of course, surfing in Iceland is still an option if you're into that sort of thing. You do need to wear a wetsuit and prepare your body for the challenge. It is also recommended that you have prior experience in surfing and adequate skills before surfing in Iceland during winter. The waves can be mighty out there.

NIXON SURF CHALLENGE 2013 - ICELAND | EVENT RECAP
The 12th edition of the Nixon Surf Challenge, in association with Monster Energy, Dragon and Reef, headed all the way north to Iceland for an incredible adventure just below the Arctic Circle, May 13-19 2013.
After a week of exploring the volcanic island and surfing little-known breaks peppered along Iceland dramatic coastline, France's Vincent Duvignac was voted Best Overall by his fellow surfers. The 25-year-old stood out from the crowd thanks to his tireless motivation to score waves despite the freezing temperatures, as well as his consistently impressive performances in the glacial water.
Australia's Chippa Wilson walked away with the Best Trick award, doing just about enough in the eyes of his fellow surfers to edge out William Aliotti. Armed with his huge arsenal of aerial tricks and an uncanny ability to eek the most out of the conditions, Chippa took to Iceland like a duck to water.
The third and final award was the 'I Rocked Iceland' prize. And that went to the Canary Islands' Jose Maria Cabrera. Bursting with positive energy throughout the trip, Cabrera was a veritable force of nature that embraced the daily challenge of paddling out in barely-above freezing water temperatures while still finding the energy to party with the best of them on fun-fueled nightlife adventures in Reykjavik.
