Churchill, Canada - Helicopter Flight - 09 Nov 2016
NOTE- Helicopters are shaky!
Zooming in magnifies the shake. As soon as you get a bead on a bear it is almost under you and out of sight. Did the best I could. No color corrections, etc. Panasonic GH4.
Still glad I did the flight.
The Return of the Train to Churchill
Sometimes a train is just a train, until it’s not. Earlier this month, we sent Joey from our Content Team on the first train back to Churchill after 560 days of suspended service.
In what were certainly celebratory circumstances, Joey’s first ever trip to Churchill was an emotional one. Here’s his story about the historic ride to this remote town, and the people who call it home.

Dog sledding in the Arctic at Churchill Manitoba, Canada #1 of 2
On my return trip from an amazing adventure north to Seal River, to photograph Polar Bears and other wildlife, I stopped over at Churchill Manitoba to try out dog sledding. It was definitely a first time for me, and a very worth while experience!.
I had the good fortune to meet up with a local legend: Gerald Azure and his Bluesky Expeditions.
An excerpt from his Web-site: Gerald Azure is the owner/operator of Bluesky Expeditions. Born and raised in the Northern Métis Community of Cormorant, Manitoba. He is the youngest of 10 children. His parents earned their living commercial trapping and fishing, and used sled dogs as their primary form of transportation until the early 1970's when ski-doing came into being.
Gerald started our run, but soon offered me the sled to drive; I was surprised but didn't hesitate to accept!! It's hard for me to put into words what it's like to be in the Arctic and experience what so many people have done for so long as their only means of long range transportation. The dogs are amazingly powerful.. and truly seem to love their work!
An experience I will forever remember!

Churchill Manitoba - The Polar Bear Capital of the World!
Churchill, Manitoba is so easy to get to! Located just a short flight north of Winnipeg in central Canada, this town of 900 humans becomes home to hundreds of polar bears for the months of October and November. Polar bears naturally migrate through this area each fall as they travel to spend their winter on the frozen Hudson Bay. Churchill, Manitoba is the best place in the world to see polar bears in their natural habitat.

The Auroras of Churchill
My 5-minute music video features time-lapse movies of the Northern Lights shot in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, over 5 nights from January 25 to 29, 2017, at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre. I was the instructor that week for a group of participants in the “Arctic Skies” Road Scholar program.
The auroras that week were typical of nightly Churchill displays, with the northern town under the auroral oval at 58° North latitude and 97° West longitude. During the displays the Kp Index was reading no higher than 3; most were at Kp 1 or 2. Nevertheless, the aurora puts on a good show on any clear night in winter. But displays with Kp indices higher than 3 or 4 are even more impressive. See my other aurora music videos here for examples from Churchill in 2016.
I shot the time-lapses with a Nikon D750 camera and Rokinon 12mm full-frame fish-eye and a Sigma 20mm lens, and a Canon 6D with a Sigma 8mm circular fish-eye lens. I shot about 3200 frames for the sequences here. Exposures varied from 1 second to 10 seconds per frame. Intervals were always 1 second.
Frames were processed with Adobe Camera Raw and LRTimelapse, and assembled with Time-Lapse from Microprojects using a 2- or 3-frame Tweening effect to smooth the motion.
