Ardgillan Castle in Ireland is one of the best day trips from Dubin. The gorgeous home is set amongst spectacular parklands overlooking the Irish Sea. The ‘castle’ is a large eighteenth-century country-style house with magnificent views of Mourne Mountains to the north and Lambay to the south-east.
Ardgillan is a sanctuary for many species of animals, mammals and birds. The park consists of 194 acres of rolling open grassland, mixed woodland and gardens.
Built by Robert Taylor in 1783, ‘Prospect House’ its original name also houses a permanent exhibition of 17th century ‘Down Survey’ maps of Ireland.
This sprawling estate features a walled and a rose garden dating back to the 1800s. The Walled Garden was originally a Victorian-styled kitchen garden and was a source for fruit, vegetables and flowers for the house.
Today, Ardgillan Castle is a popular visitor attraction with a range of facilities including castle tours, garden tours, afternoon tea, children’s parties, theatre events and more. You can also host special events like weddings here.

The magnificent Ardgillan castle demesne lies on the coast of Fingal overlooking the Mourne mountains and has stunning views no matter what the weather. The castle was built in 1738 and was original called prospect house and later castleised and the name changed to Ardgillan Castle. The Taylor family lived in the house from the beginning but when they were forced to sell due to rising costs of the house, they sold to Henrich Potts, a German man. His sister then inherited the house and she sold off everything in the house and now Fingal county council own the demesne and Ardgillan Castle LTD run the House on a day to day basis, running loads of great activities including Afternoon tea in the drawing room, castle tours, children's parties,Paws dog cafe, the very popular playground, beautiful walks and much much more.
