Stranraer is a town in Inch, Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. Stranraer lies on the shores of Loch Ryan, on the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland. Stranraer is Dumfries and Galloway's second-largest town.
Stranraer is an administrative centre for the West Galloway Wigtownshire area of Dumfries and Galloway. It is best known as having been a ferry port, previously connecting Scotland with Belfast and Larne in Northern Ireland; the last service was transferred to nearby Cairnryan in November 2011. The main industries in the area are the ferry port, with associated industries, tourism and, more traditionally, farming.
Some argue that the name comes from the Scottish Gaelic An t-Sròn Reamhar meaning The Fat Nose, but which more prosaically might be rendered as the broad headland. The most commonly accepted explanation is that it derives its name from the strand or burn which divides the row, raw, of houses on its banks. (The town burn, now under the two Strand streets.) In time Strandraw was named and spelled Stranrawer, and afterwards Stranraer.
The A77 runs north towards Ayr, Prestwick and Glasgow. The A75 runs east from Stranraer to Gretna, with links to the M6 going to Carlisle. The A75 is part of European route E18, but, like all European routes, it is not signposted as such in the United Kingdom. The main national coach providers operate services from Stranraer. National Express offer a service to London, and Scottish Citylink (in association with Ulsterbus) operate services to Edinburgh.
Stranraer railway station is the southern terminus for one of the branch lines of the Glasgow South Western Line. Trains are provided by Abellio ScotRail daily to Ayr, Glasgow Central, and Kilmarnock. From Stranraer connections to the West Coast Main Line, can be made at Glasgow Central, or traveling via Ayr, Kilmarnock, Dumfries to Carlisle. Onward trains from either Glasgow Central or Carlisle connect direct to London Euston and other destinations such as Manchester Piccadilly, Crewe and Birmingham New Street.
The Castle of St. John is a medieval tower house, built around 1500 by the Adairs of Kilhilt. It has been used as a home, a court, a prison, and a military garrison, the last during the Killing Times in the 1680s. The Old Town Hall, built in 1776, now houses the Stranraer Museum with its displays of Victorian Wigtownshire and the town's polar explorers, Sir John Ross and his nephew James Clark Ross. The town is also home to the North West Castle, built in 1820 and the first hotel in the world with its own indoor curling ice rink.

Glenwhan Gardens – a 12-acre (4.9 ha) garden near Dunragit.
Logan Botanic Garden, near Port Logan village, one of the four sites of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
Mull of Galloway – the most southerly point of Scotland, with a lighthouse, visitor centre and RSPB bird reserve.

The Robert the Bruce Trail begins at Loch Ryan, near Stranraer.
Southern Upland Way – a 212-mile (341 km) coast-to-coast path between Portpatrick and Cockburnspath.

Historical Make-over at Hobcaw House
This is a photo journey of the historic restoration of downstairs guest bedroom of Hobcaw House on Hobcaw Barony,Georgetown, SC. Hobcaw House was the winter retreat of Bernard Baruch, Wall Street financier and advisor to presidents, later owned by his daughter Belle Baruch. It sits on a bluff overlooking Winyah Bay and has served as a retreat to presidents, prime minisers and premiers who made decisions that affected national and international events of the twentieth century.
The house remains almost fully furnished with family pieces and a prominent art collection and the entire Barony is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Behind every beautiful interior lies an intriguing story. This one begins in the fall of 1931 amidst a flurry of national publicity. Bernard Baruch was opening his newly built Colonial Revival mansion - Hobcaw House. The thirteen thousand square foot Georgian-style residence would play host to luminaries of world society and within two months of opening, Winston Churchill would arrive for a visit! Over the years other world leaders, Franklin Roosevelt, the Prince of Monaco, and a host of American generals like Pershing, Bradley, Clark and Marshall came to take time from the glare of public life and enjoy Baruch's famous hospitality and the Barony's world-class sporting oppurtunities. Visitors from the arts, entertainment and literary worlds were overnight guests in the downstairs bedroom, including publishers Henry and Clare Booth Luce of LIFE MAGAZINE, author Jack London, composer Irving Berlin and many prominent women of history, such as Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, Elanor Roosevelt and Diana Churchill.
Breathing life back into this beloved guest bedroom where so many famous has stayed, required patience, a long hard look at original Hobcaw Style, marriage of available modern resources and a story-like approach, in order to reveal the legendary people who had lived and visited here. Local Pawleys Island designer, Rebecca Ceron Martin focused on the Baruch's sophisticated Lowcountry-sportsman style of elegance and gave the room a refined femine perspective to contrast with the adjacent guest bedroom, FDR's favorite, which exhibits masculine appeal.
Learning that the Baruchs also favored the English Country look populare with affluent society of the thrities, drapery and coverlet fabric selected was a floral chintz pattern by the exclusive English fabric house, Beacon Hill. Its pattern, Ardwell Gardens, acquaints visitors with the Baruchs' Scottish heritage and the nearby beloved Fetteresso Castle, where they summered. Other touches developed to give the room past while using modern materials, included purposely under-stuffing upholstered pieces so they wouldn't look plump and new, selecting textiles not necessarily matchng to suggest an evolved-over-time look, and using ivory underlay instead of white to contribute to the agingof the room. Layers of wallpaper were removed, plaster repaired, rotten window sills refurbished and hardwood floors buffed to a spit-shine to give the room a nostalgic glow, suggesting it had simply been awaiting the Baruch's return home!
Valuable original furnishings, lamps, art and accessories definitely set the stage, but period-accurate reproduction textiles of the finest quality and design standards as originally selected by the Baruchs were its backdrop. Primary and companion fabrics wereaged to avoid a newly done look; wall and trim paint duplicates the exact sytle of the room in the thrities. Design inspiration, and custom pillows were created from a Smithsonian Schumacher archival fabric that is no longer in production. The bathroom shower curtain and window treatment were fashiioned from song-bird fabric reminiscent of the period from Thiabaut, the nation's oldest continuously operating wallpaper firms since 1886.
Ceron Martin, who generously gave her time and talent to the project, said It takes a lot of work for something to look this undecorated and to use new materials to achieve a gently aged look...

Old Photographs Portmahomack Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of photographs of Portmahomack, Easter Ross. This small fishing village is situated in the Tarbat Peninsula in the parish of Tarbat. Ballone Castle lies about a mile from the village. Portmahomack was a centre for the white fishing boom that lasted up until the early part of the 20th century. The bay was so full of boats at time that it was said you could walk from the harbour to the rocks on the other side of the bay without getting wet. The harbour was improved by the famous engineer Thomas Telford and was important in grain export in the 19th century. Thomas Summers West, born 18 November 1927, died 9 January 2010, was a British chemist educated at Old Tarbat Public School in Portmahomack and then Tain Royal Academy. He then studied chemistry and obtained a B.Sc degree at Aberdeen University. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
