Areni Wine Factory
Areni is famous for an indigenous Armenian grape variety of the same name that has survived the harsh climate of high elevation and developing a distinct character from the area’s coarse sedimentary and rich volcanic soil and has been grown for thousands of years. The Wine Factory is a quaint little place with a mixture of interesting souvenirs, upstairs restaurant and a wine tasting area. We were able to sample a number of grape and fruit wines.

Areni Wine Festival 2018
In 2011, archaeologists discovered the world’s oldest winery dating back 6,000 years in Areni Cave. Armenian winemakers today are reinvigorating the world’s oldest wine sector, using indigenous varieties and world-class methods to create award-winning labels. Each October Armenian winemakers and tens of thousands of visitors gather in Areni village to celebrate the harvest and heritage during the annual Areni Wine Festival.
Join the festivities, located at the base of a stunning cliff facing scenic Areni village. The festival includes a parade of winemakers, competitions, folk music and dances, local vendors selling crafts and foods, and—most importantly—a lot of wine tasting.

The village of Areni (1730 p, formerly called Arpa) is famous for its wine, much of which is produced in Getap further down the road.
Visible to the right of the main road is the Holy Astvatsatsin (Mother of God) church of 1321, built during the tenure of Abbot Hovhannes. The architecture as well as the carvings are the work of Momik, and there are interesting tombstones outside.
