The renovated Argotti Gardens were inaugurated by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in a ceremony held on Friday evening. Works to improve the gardens and their surroundings began in 2016, when bastions started being restored, with repairs to the gardens themselves starting 12 months ago.

Floriana Gardens and Railway Station, Malta
The area that is today occupied by the town of Floriana was fortified in the early 17th century to strengthen the defences of the capital city Valletta. The bastions and fortifications were designed by the Italian military engineer Pietro Paolo Floriani and were called the Floriana Lines. The city that grew within during the reign of Grandmaster Antonio Manoel de Vilhena (1722-1736) was named Borgo Vilhena in the Grandmaster's honour. However the residents preferred to continue to call their town Floriana (Maltese: Furjana) and this is the name that endured. The open spaces and gardens of Floriana were conceived as a recreational area for the Knights outside of the City of Valletta. Today Floriana is endowed with several public and historical gardens. Many are located above or within the bastions overlooking the Grand Harbour in the east or Marsamxett Harbour in the west. Floriana also boasts several historic fountains including the Tritons Fountain, just outside Valletta, the Lion Fountain (1728) in St. Anne Street and the Wignacourt Fountain that was moved to St. Philip Gardens from St. George Square (Main Guard) in Valletta. Among the more impressive monuments in Floriana are the statue of Christ The King (1913) by the famous Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino, located in The Mall just in front of the Phoenicia Hotel, The War Memorial within the roundabout at the end of St. Anne Street, the Vilhena Monument near the Granaries and the Monument to Pietro Paolo Floriani. This video starts at The Mall promenade and visits the Granaries, the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial garden, Vilhena Gardens, Sir Luigi Preziosi Gardens, King George V Garden, Herbert Ganado Gardens, St. Philip Gardens, Argotti Botanical Gardens, Sa Maison Garden Tal-Milorda and the Msida Bastion Historic Garden (Garden of Rest). One little known fact is that the Maltese patriot Mikiel Anton Vassalli is believed to have been buried in this cemetery. This video also visits Floriana's underground Victorian railway station (12:35), that was opened to the public for the first time since the War on just one day, 23rd October 2011 and also takes an unusual peep inside the Wignacourt Water Fountain (1615), that was also open to the public.
The video was shot mostly during November 2011.
Music: Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5 Emperor, Mvt 1 and extract of Mvt 2, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Zubin Mehta, Alfred Brendel

Għanafest World Music Festival 2016 - TVAM Feature
Għanafest Malta World Music Festival celebrates the diversity of Mediterranean and world music, bringing together a rich programme of għana, Maltese music bands and international world music acts.
Għanafest Malta World Music Festival will be held at Argotti Gardens in Floriana between the 10th and 12th of June 2016. Tickets, at €3 per night or €7 for a three-day block ticket, are available at the door.
The Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana form part of the University of Malta and their development as a botanic garden dates back to the early 19th century when the first Chair of Natural History was established. Argotti started of as a private garden of Bailiff Ignatius de Argote y Guzman in the 1740's and still has several original architectural features dating back to this period including the unique Nympheum and the Summer Villa.
Message from the Artistic Director
This is a particularly significant period for arts and culture in Malta, and Għanafest is right there on our cultural calendar with a huge potential to grow more in the years to come. Malta will be very much on the international cultural radar with the country hosting the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018. I want to see a gradual build-up in Għanafest’s profile which will in turn attract more international attention. I also would like to see this festival as a growing multinational get-together, an event that celebrates multi-ethnicity and cross-border collaborations. These, I believe, are the elements that will bring a new vitality and a positive energy in a world that is tainted by xenophobic attacks and social unrest. So let’s see a manifestation of creative vitality and variety, where artists and bands blend the old with the new.
I'm looking forward to welcoming all the artists that make up this year's line-up. From the powerful trio Ezza who blend modern rock sounds with Tuareg and North African pulse, to the passionate and bright interpretations of 13th Century troubadour music by Sirventés and the shooting stars of Estonian folk fusion music Trad.Attack! And closer to home we'll have the witty folk rock members of Mistura, the Indian fusion sounds of Cushion and the joyous, colourful sounds of KażinSka and all the għannejja (Maltese folk singers) who will grace the Għanafest stage.
It's all happening between the 10th and 12th of June. So pencil in these dates and I hope to see many of you there!

Sa Maison Garden fortifications, MALTA ( ‘il-Gnien tal-Milorda’ )
The Sa Maison Garden is also known as ‘il-Gnien tal-Milorda’ (Her Ladyship's Garden) in memory of Lady Julia Lockwood, who loved this garden between 1842 and 1856 until her house was demolished and taken over by the military. After 1903, this beautiful piece of land was handed over to the civil government. Even though the Sa Maison Garden is quite small, it is very pretty and nicely decorated, well known for its military heritage.
