Qalansiyah Beach in Socotra Island, Yemen
Qalansiyah Beach in Socotra Island, Yemen
Sometimes you need an escape. And I’m not talking about Las Vegas for the weekend or a few days camping in the mountains — I mean a real escape. The kind of escape where your phone won’t work and the people speak a different language, where the rest of the world can be forgotten while you relax on soft sandy beaches, wander island canyons, and sleep under the shade of ancient Dr. Seuss-like trees.
Socotra Island is your place. A small archipelago 150 miles east of the Horn of Africa, Socotra is full of amazing beaches and impressive landscapes that's technically part of Yemen. For an outdoor enthusiast or adventurous soul this place has all of the makings of an ideal escape: camping, hiking, swimming, and exploring to your heart's content. Few tourists know and take advantage of this exceptionally gorgeous retreat so it is relatively uncrowded throughout the year.
There are tons of beaches on Socotra Island, so anyone who likes to swim in the blue brine of the sea and squish their toes in warm sand will be perfectly happy here. Qalansiyah Beach is one of the most popular for those looking to relax, tan, and splash around. But there is also Shoab, Ghost Crab, Arher, Delisha and Aomak Beaches scattered around the coastal circumference. Finding beaches here is no difficult task - in fact, it is usually harder to narrow down which beach you want to go to.
Surrounded by jagged limestone mountains, Qalansiyah Beach offers white sand and turquoise water. You can choose to hike here or arrive by a short boat ride. Enjoy a dip in the clear water or don a snorkeling mask to notice an array of tropical fish swimming just below the surface.

Arher beach, part 1, Socotra, November 2018
Arher beach where sand dunes standing 150 m (492 ft) high have been piled up against the sheer rock faces by the prevailing westerly winds. In Arher there is a fresh creak coming out from a granite massive is meeting salty sea water on the beach. You can relax on green grass around the creak, swim in the sea or if you feel fit you can climb a huge sand dune to get a fantastic view over this charming spot.
Socotra - Yemen - Really Amazing Worlds
Socotra Yemen - The Alien Islands: The most alien-looking place on Earth.
The island of Socotra is part of an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is so isolated that a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet. Notable are the dragon’s blood trees that look like flying saucers perched on trunks.
Adenium socotranum are trees that look like elephants’ legs with pink flowers on top. Birds such as the Socotra starling, Socotra sunbird, and Socotra grosbeak are found nowhere else on Earth. Bats are the island’s only native mammal.
In 2010 a Russian archaeological team discovered the ruins of a city on Socotra dating to the second century. The island is also held by some to be the location of the original Garden of Eden, due to its isolation, biological diversity, and the fact that it is located on the edge of Yemen’s Gulf of Aden, which many connect with the ancient Sumerian tales of a paradise called Dilmun.
There are almost no roads on the island, which is also home to a collection of caves and a number of shipwrecks.
