Shimabara Castle is located in Shimabara, Japan. This castle sits between the popular Mount Unzen and Ariake Bay. This castle is five stories tall and was originally built in 1624 until 1874. The castle has since been rebuilt and now acts as a museum, while the moats and stone walls are still part of the original structure.

The volcanic MT. UNZEN AND KUMAMOTO CITY: (Source of Information, Wikipedia)
Mt. Unzen volcanic activities on May 21, 1792, had created two earthquakes and a landslide that swiped Shimabara and the Ariake Bay. The landslide hit the ocean and resulted a huge waves (tsunami) with the height between 10-20 m, before bouncing back to Shimabara and Ariake Bay.
15.000 people were killed at that time, 5000 presumed to be killed by the landslide, another 5000 by the earthquakes and 5000 more by the tsunami. Mount Unzen eruption also caused collapse of the Southern flank of the Mayuyama dome in front of Mount Unzen!
Between 1991- 1995 Mt. Unzen shows its activities again. June 3, 1991 eruption has created pyroclastic flow and killed 43 people. The famous volcano filmers Maurice and Katja Krafft and geologist Harry Glicken were among those lost. The landslide reached as far as the coast and buried part of Kumamoto as you can see in the slide film which I made during my visit to this area in July 2012.

Yūtoku Inari Shrine 祐徳稲荷神社 is a shrine located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture. It is one of the most famous Inari shrines in Japan.
Dedicated to Inari, the wild fox kami, it is the third largest of its kind in Japan. It was constructed in 1688 as the family shrine of the Nabeshima clan who ruled what would become the Saga area (called Hizen at that time) during the Edo period. It was built to the Inari kami of the harvest by a princess from Kyoto named Manko Hime 萬子媛 who married Nabeshima Naotomo. The Nabeshima clan was entrusted with protecting Edo’s interests in Kyūshū, in particular the city of Nagasaki, which was one of the few ports open to foreign contact during Japan’s period of isolation.
Its main hall stands on tall wooden beams 18 meters above the valley floor, not unlike Kyoto's Kiyomizudera Temple. From the main hall's terrace, a walking trail leads further into the wooded hill behind the shrine. Sections of the path are covered by torii gates and lined by smaller shrines. After about a ten minute climb, visitors will find the small Okunoin shrine hall at the top and nice views over Kashima City and the nearby Ariake Sea.
Higashi-yama Koen, a park making up the outer garden of the shrine, is known for the splendor of its azaleas.
