The Arikok National Park takes up approximately 18 percent of the island of Aruba and includes three primary geological formations: the Aruba lava formation, a quartz diorite formation, and a limestone formation that extends inward from the coast. These formations have directly influenced Aruba's human settlement, as well as its natural wonders.
Aruba is home to several species which only live on the island, including two unique species of snake and two bird species. Rock outcroppings also create micro-climatic conditions to support these unique plant and animal species, as well as settlements. These are located within the Arikok National Park almost exclusively. Inside the park are some of the island's oldest Arawak paintings, and has since drawn attention from the government.
Indigenous reptiles include the cascabel (Crotalus durissus unicolor), the santanero or (Aruban) Baker's cat-eyed snake (Leptodeira bakeri), and the kododo blauw or Aruban whiptail lizard (Cnemidophorus arubensus). Birds include the shoco or Aruban burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia arubensis) and the prikichi or Aruban parakeet (Aratinga pertinax arubensis).
First designated as an important national area in the 1980s, Arikok National Park is home to popular hiking trails, covering all kinds of terrain from hills to gold mines, and even plantation ruins.

Quadirikiri Cave | Arikok National Park, Aruba
In the last Aruba episode we were on the hunt for the elk horn coral, and after battling the waves we finally found it looking healthy and happy.
In this episode we will visit the Quadirikiri Caves, close to Butucu, located east of Oranjestad.
Its about a 45 minute drive to the grounds of the Arikok National Park from our location, which is located at Hudishibana near Arashi Beach on the northwest tip of Aruba.
On the way we ditched the car so that we could hike on the shores of Dos Playa to catch these breathtaking views of the ocean.
While hiking along the coast we found that we were actually walking on a ancient coral reef.
As you can see from the fossils here, the entire structure was once a thriving coral reef.
Quadirikiri Cave is a limestone cave with many openings in the ceiling and plenty of space to explore the caves. Because of the natural lighting from the openings, you can see a lot of the cave.
Legend has it that the daughter of an Indian chief who fell in love with a man who was unacceptable to her father was imprisoned and died here, her spirit vanishing to heaven through the holes in the roof of the cave. It may or may not be true, but it is quite a romantic story.
Supposedly, if the wind is just right, and you stir up enough dust you will see a dust tornado form inside the cave.
Unfortunately after many attempts we weren’t able to produce the dust tornado.
The Quadirikiri Cave is famous for its two chambers, illuminated by the sunlight streaming through holes in the roof of the cave. The cave extends for about 100 feet. In the darker portions of the cave nest hundreds of harmless bats.
If you like what you’ve seen and want to see where we explore next, don’t forget to hit that subscribe button and catch my next episode where we hike to the the Conchi natural pool.
