kobe ningyo automaton doll
. As you turn the knob on the side of the piece, the head of a man who is holding a Shamisen (a Japanese 3 stringed instruments similar to a lute ) in his left hand pivots side to side while he strums the strings with a plectrum (called Bachi) with his right hand all while opening and closing his mouth as he appears to sing. His friend is more interested in drinking his sake ! ! (pouring into vessel, raising it up to mouth and throwing his head back)
Kobe toys are wooden mechanical dolls. Each piece is hand made and a 'one-off'. They are also called the Kobe Dolls and the original production began after the opening of the Kobe port in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan in 1868 as a high-class expensive souvenir and only foreigners who came to Kobe with luxurious ships could afford to purchase them.
This is a particularly unusual one as it features two characters - most have only one.
