[JAPAN] Tribute to Sir. Donald L. Keene, Ph.D.
This video is dedicated to Sir. Donald Lawrence Keene, Ph.D., a former professor of Japanese Literature at Columbia University in the City of New York and a well-known novelist.
Donald Lawrence Keene (born 18 June 1922 - 24 February 2019 in Tokyo) is an American-born Japanese scholar, historian, teacher, writer and translator of Japanese literature. Sir. Keene is University Professor Emeritus and Shincho Professor Emeritus of Japanese Literature at Columbia University, where he taught for over fifty (50) years. Soon after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, he retired from Columbia, moved to Japan permanently, and acquired citizenship under the name Kīn Donarudo (Donald Keene in the Japanese name order). His poetic nom de plume (雅号 gagō) is Kīn Donarudo, which he occasionally also used as a nickname.
Before becoming Sir. Keene, Donald as a young man obtained his bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1942. He then studied the Japanese language at the U.S. Navy Japanese Language School in Boulder, Colorado and in Berkeley, CA. He served as an intelligence officer in the Pacific region during World War II.
During WW II, Donald wrote that he walked through the aftermath of the battlefields in the Pacific Islands. The Imperial Japanese soldiers were never captured to become P.O.W.s during the war; the ones captured as Japanese were all Koreans for the Korean Peninsula was annexed to Imperial Japan from 1910-1945. The Japanese, both soldiers and civilians, chose to kill themselves than to be captured and enslaved by the enemy. This is Bushido, the way of Samurai.
When the belongings of dead Imperial Japanese soldiers were gathered and checked by Donald's team for information gathering, Donald was astonished. There were beautifully written poems called, Ha.i.ku, describing the soldiers' feelings at the time on the battlefield. At first, Donald and the team were expecting to find something about their military information but there were none to be found from those dead soldiers' memo-notes.
Indeed, the Imperial Japanese soldiers were all highly skilled poets regardless of their social status. Donald and the team began wondering who their enemy really was, having such sophistication and high moral standard.
Upon Donald's discharge from the U.S. Navy, he returned to Columbia University where he earned a master’s degree in Japanese Literature in 1947. He was determined to find out what Japanese people are all about. So, his research continued.
After Columbia, Donald studied for a year at Harvard University and then to Cambridge University in England where he earned a second master’s degree and became a Fellow of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge from 1948–1954, and a University Lecturer from 1949–1955. In the interim, in 1953, he also studied at Kyoto University in Japan, earning his PhD from Columbia in 1949. Donald credits Prof. Ryūsaku Tsunoda as a mentor during this period.
WW II in the Pacific to Donald was a life-changing experience. The Japanese Imperial soldiers were poets; as a matter fact, they were all well-educated and highly sophisticated which image was completely contrary to the image created by the U.S. gov't propaganda. This discrepancy shocked young Donald tremendously.
In September 1945, after WW II, Donald saw the live Japanese people in Japan for the first time. The Japanese were kind and polite despite their entire country was bombed beyond recognition by Donald's country, the U.S.A. Japanese people were still quite civilized to Donald; this shocked and puzzled him.
When Donald travelled around Japan, seeing what remained of her... especially a few cities which weren't bombed such as Kyoto or Hagi in Yamaguchi-prefecture, he was heart-broken. Those ruined cities were just like Kyoto and Hagi if the war didn't happen. Japan was indeed serene and beautiful; yet, everything was gone. Japan is the world most ancient nation-state and Democracy which is considered by the world people that she is one of the most important world treasures. Donald decided himself to preserve this world treasure called Japan with all his utter best until his death.
Please enjoy the video and give a massive thumbs up; thanks indeed for watching. My videos are sort of related to each other, so enjoy others as well. Peace out... to all the beautiful souls out there in the world... ; D
P.S. (3.05:4.20) error there: I meant to say, “as one of the professors at Columbia Univ. in New York City”

Took a small trip to Yakushima. This island is home to Japanese Cedar trees that can date back thousands of years. The initial inhabitants of this island were Yakushima Macaques and Sika Deer, while Yakushima hosts the largest migration of Loggerhead Sea Turtles in the North Pacific!
Much of Yakushima is protected land, and because of this, much of the island has gone untouched showing a wide range of natural beauty.
