Hiking in Terelj National Park, Mongolia: Exploring the Ariyabal Temple
Aryabal Buddhist Meditation Center, Gorkhi-Terelj National Park, Tov, Mongolia, Asia
Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is one of the national parks of Mongolia. The Terelj tourist zone has a number of tourist camps. It is connected with Ulan Bator by a paved road. The road comes to the Gorkhiin Davaa pass. Most of the tourist camps and tourist attractions are before this pass. The road then ends in Terelj settlement, which features small shops and restaurants. Terelj settlement is located in the Terelj gol river dale, approximately 66 km from Ulaanbaatar city center. The national park tourist zone is formally Nalaikh düüreg (district) part of Ulaanbaatar, the rest (protected) zone begins to the North from Terelj Gol river and is located in Mongolia's Töv aimag. A small southern portion of the park is developed for tourists, with restaurants, souvenir shops, horses and camels for rent, and tourist ger camps, many of them run by Juulchin, the former state tourism company. However, most of the park is undeveloped and difficult to access. Attractions include Khagiin Khar Lake, a 20m deep glacial lake 80 km upstream from the tourist camps, and Yestii Hot Water Springs, natural hot springs 18 km further upstream. The park also has a Buddhist monastery that is open to visitors. Park wildlife includes brown bears and over 250 species of birds. The Tuul River flows through the park. The park has many rock formations for rock climbers, and includes two famous formations named for things they resemble: Turtle Rock and the Old Man Reading a Book (Praying Lama Rock). Many Westerners were introduced to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park when the CBS reality television program The Amazing Race visited the park in the second episode of its tenth season.
Spinning the prayer wheels at Aryabal Buddhist Temple in Terelj National Park in Mongolia
The Aryabal Buddhist meditation temple is located on a steep hill in Terelj National Park in Mongolia.
There is a set of 108 steps that lead to the entrance of the temple.
From the entrance to the temple’s grounds, there is a walking path leading to the set of stairs.
The walking path is designed for walking meditation and reflection.
72 signs with 144 Buddhist teachings, written in English and Mongolian, lined the sides of the path.
When you make it to the top of the stairs you will find 108 prayer wheels surrounding the temple. They are devices for spreading spiritual well being. It is believed that when one spins all 108 wheels, which contain more than 3 million written mantras will find happiness and fulfillment in their lives.

Video recorded inside the temple. I was the only foreigner inside, and there were people praying, so I made the recording quietly from a corner.
