Arizona Distilling Company
It took 85 years for Tempe to have its own distillery since Prohibition was repealed in 1933, but once you taste the spirits distilled at the Arizona Distilling Company, you’ll agree the product was well-worth the wait.
PHOENIX & Tempe, Arizona - Layover Day | Truly Remarkable Life
We set out in the morning on a truly remarkable journey that has taken us back to one of our favorite places... Phoenix, Arizona! A 10:30 am flight meant that we didn't have to wake up at zero-dark-thirty in the morning. It also meant that we missed the early-birds at the TSA lines. Parking and security was a breeze.
Arriving in Phoenix, we grabbed our luggage and called the hotel shuttle. (Pro-tip: When possible, choose a hotel with an airport shuttle to save on the cost of a taxi, Uber, or rental car.) We checked in and freshened up quickly. The two-hour time difference meant we still had the entire day in front of us. Plenty of time to explore!
The hotel manager suggested we check out the nearby downtown district in Tempe (near ASU). Phoenix has an awesome light rail system. We were able to get day passes for both of us for $4 each. We hopped on and had the freedom to ride back and forth all day - stopping wherever we wanted to explore.
The shuttle driver recommended a Mexican restaurant called El Hefe for lunch. It was just a few blocks from the train. The food was basically elevated bar cuisine that catered to the students. The rustic, biker-garage theme kept it casual, but the food was nicely done.
After lunch we explored the avenues and discovered a lot of new-age boutiques, hippie-themed gift shops, smoke shops and countless bar/grill combos - all set among multi-story campus buildings with hidden courtyards and plazas. It was pretty interesting.
We stumbled across a ceramics museum run by ASU. We were pleasantly surprised to find beautiful ceramics from all around the world and spanning the past six decades. The Chinese Ceramics were phenomenal.
Later, we walked about ten blocks to our favorite Phoenix haunt - OREGANO's. We are not sponsored by or affiliated with the restaurant in any way... we just love it! Check it out online.
SHOUT OUT to our server, Anthony! Thanks for the remarkable service and putting up with a couple of hot, tired tourists!
KJ had a free ride from Uber, so we skipped the ten block walk back to the train and took a short ride back to the hotel where KJ immediately went to work on this video.
We are having so much fun sharing our adventures with you. It truly makes it more meaningful for us and we hope you enjoy it too! There's more to come! Where will we go next?
We hope to see you down the road, in the air, or whatever form of travel that works for you! Check out the links below for ways to connect with us!
Go find your Truly Remarkable Life!

Adventurous Stills | Tap That AZ Video Podcast - S02E06 [Crowler Series]
I have a secret to tell you. I’ve never told anyone this before. I really enjoy beer. I know. Shocking. But I wasn’t always a beer drinker. In my early years I was surrounded by the likes of Genesee and Natural Light so on nights out I would usually opt for a Jack and Coke even though I wasn’t a huge fan of pop (as we called soda in the Midwest). But hey, I had to drink SOMETHING. Then I moved to Arizona and my life changed. In many positive ways. But in the category of alcohol consumption for the purpose of this article. I was first turned on to craft beer which I quickly feel in love with. My love affair with quality spirits was a much longer courtship.
The first taste of Scotch I even had was a 15 year Highland Park that my father in law bought to share with a group of us for Christmas. There were about 8 of us and we each got a pour to taste, contemplate and discuss. The first sip immediately triggered my inner dialogue to respond with “Spit it out! Now! You have just ingested some sort of handcrafted black-market Mongolian cleaning solvent!”. Luckily I had the self-control to NOT spit it out on the table and avoid embarrassment despite my strong desire to do exactly that. Now my mind was racing (“This sip was less than 10% of the total volume of liquid still left in my glass. I can’t keep this up. What do I do?!?!” So I did what I have done for years to get out of anything that I HAD to do: I closed my eyes, said 3 Hail Mary’s and threw it back like an old-school Slick Rick album. Damn, that wasn’t so bad. And now it’s over. But then they get to me in the roundtable discussion.
Them: “So what do you think?”
Me: “Of what?”
Them: “Of the Scotch”
Me: “Oh. Yeah. It was good. REAL good”
Them: “WAS?!? You drank it already?!?!”
At this point I had no choice but to confess I drank my portion of this $90/bottle Scotch in less than 2 seconds like it was a $3 Flaming Dr. Pepper to get amped up for the Limp Bizkit concern. Needless to say they gave me flack for that for a long time. But they also never gave up on me. Every time we all got together someone would buy a bottle of good whiskey and we’d all taste it. And my palate developed quite nicely. Now there are times where I enjoy a good whiskey more than a beer. Not often. But occasionally. Why? You got some of the good stuff?
So anyways, since starting this podcast I have ventured off the beer path a few times to check out some of the awesome spirits being made in this great state with my visit to Hamilton Distillers and Arizona Distilling Company. Not too long ago Chase from Adventurous Stills reached out and invited us over to check out their place in Tempe. I had heard some great things about their products before going there so was excited to check it out but was even more blown away once we go there. The fact that pretty much everything they use is hand made is amazing in itself but their spirits were REALLY good.
In this episode I sit down with 2 of the 3 owners, Chase and Kelly, to talk about the challenges they face selling top-shelf spirits and how the water is Tempe is perfect for making spirits. Enjoy the show!

Arizona craft breweries are embracing new beer law
One of the owners of Tempe-based Four Peaks Brewery said the brewery plans to hire more people and expand its brand, which includes releasing more specialty beer. The bar's co-owners said they were thrilled when Gov. Doug Ducey signed the Arizona Beer Bill.

Adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting device for arid climates
Adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting device for arid climates. Hyunho Kim et al (2018), Nature Communications
Water scarcity is a particularly severe challenge in arid and desert climates. While a substantial amount of water is present in the form of vapour in the atmosphere, harvesting this water by state-of-the-art dewing technology can be extremely energy intensive and impractical, particularly when the relative humidity (RH) is low (i.e., below ~40% RH). In contrast, atmospheric water generators that utilise sorbents enable capture of vapour at low RH conditions and can be driven by the abundant source of solar-thermal energy with higher efficiency. Here, we demonstrate an air-cooled sorbent-based atmospheric water harvesting device using the metal−organic framework (MOF)-801 [Zr6O4(OH)4(fumarate)6] operating in an exceptionally arid climate (10–40% RH) and sub-zero dew points (Tempe, Arizona, USA) with a thermal efficiency (solar input to water conversion) of ~14%. We predict that this device delivered over 0.25 L of water per kg of MOF for a single daily cycle.

Every act was just so perfect - Shen Yun in the US Capital
Shen Yun Performing Arts have just competed their Washington D.C. premiere on Tuesday at Kennedy Center. The widow of Tom Lantos, formerly a member of the House of Representative, was there to enjoy the show.
On January 29th, Shen Yun Performing Arts wrapped up its first show of 2013 in the US capital.
[Ms. Annettee Tillemann, Wife of Late US Congressman, Tom Lantos]:
It was great and congratulations. I think this one was one of the best I've seen. It was outstanding. Every act was just so perfect.
Amongst the audience members at the prestigious Kennedy Center was Annette Tillemann. She's the wife of the late US Congressman, Tom Lantos.
[Ms. Annette Tillemann, Wife of Late US Congressman, Tom Lantos]:
The beauty and the meaning that every one of the act has, I think, really communicates itself with the audience.
Ms. Tillemann is here with her daughter. She wants her to appreciate more than just Shen Yun's music and dance, but also its deeper messages.
[Annette Lantos Tillemann-Deick, Daughter of Late US Congressman Tom Lantos]:
It's so wonderful to be able to bring her to something that is so purely uplifting. Where do you see so many beautiful young people, so disciplined yet so joyful? And, telling a story that needs to be reiterated. All that is beautiful comes from our Creator. We will return there and we will be reunited with one another. It's an absolutely wonderful message, timeless and of eternal significance.
Shen Yun Performing Arts aims to revive China's 5,000 years of culture. Ms. Tillemann says the principles distilled from this culture should be understood by everyone.
[Annette Lantos Tillemann-Deick, Daughter of Late US Congressman Tom Lantos]:
When we bring our children and our grandchildren to see the Shen Yun dancers, it's because we want them to somehow internalize these timeless principles that's been so beautifully developed over five thousand years of practice and virtue and discipline. It's truly manifest magnificently in this astonishing performance.
Shen Yun Performing Arts' New York Company will be performing seven shows at the Kennedy Center, until February 3rd.
Ms Tillemann:
I hope you do it every year. We will be here every year to enjoy it.

Jeff Loomis - Devil Theory (Rhythm cover)
Hey guys, I've recently joined Jeff Loomis' band and have been practicing these songs like crazy, so I figured I'd throw up some videos of a few songs. I'll be playing that parts that I do live, so there's not any lead playing.
Come check us out on tour with Soilwork this spring!
