SOLD 9909 N La Cholla, Tucson AZ 85742 - Tucson Horse Property for Sale
As you probably know from my intro, horses and the dream of owning a horse property was one of my primary reasons for leaving New York and moving to Tucson! I’ve owned horses ever since. They are majestic and caring, strong yet gentle, and have captivated my heart and the hearts of my children. In fact, my daughter, Gabby, is a champion in riding and jumping competitions!
The only drawback of horse ownership has to be finding a location that you trust to care for your horse when you aren’t there. While I know of many quality stables in the area, you really can’t beat the ability to walk out of your backyard and into your very own horse facility. Not only do you get to ride more often, but you can take better care of your equine companion and you guys will form a more enduring bond.
This bond is special and must be experienced to truly be understood. Thankfully, Tucson is a horse town and you can usually find homes with horse facilities throughout the metro area. This sprawling, 3.3 acre horse property I just listed is in a perfect location and has direct access to wonderful hiking and riding trails. With the stables already built, this is a can’t miss opportunity to live the rest of your life on the saddle. Give me a call today at (520) 909-7653 to experience the quintessential Western life today!

Road trip with gorgeous scenery from Green Valley, AZ to Sierra Vista, AZ 10202019
Just what the title says! In the beginning, I incorrectly mention highway 86 when I should have said highway 83. I correct it later in the video. We took this trip on Sunday to pick up the old intake manifold from the engine Dave built for me, and of course the machine shop was closed. However his wife Nancy was kind enough to set the intake manifold outside for us as her husband Dave was out of town for his Mother's funeral. If you need machine work or an engine built in this part of the state, please contact Dave of Precision Machine Service at:

Chino Canyon Foray to the Base of Elephant Head
Anchored by the range highpoint Mount Wrightson, the fourty-ninth highest summit in the state of Arizona and the highest peak in the Tucson, Arizona area, the Santa Rita Mountains are a special and beautiful Sky Island range in far southern Arizona.
These mountains are roughly 40 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, halfway between Tucson and the international border between the USA and Mexico. While they can be accessed from the more remote East side, most visitors to and residents of Tucson will access this range from the more populated West side.
Elephant Head (5,640 ft) is a prominent natural land mark in the Santa Cruz Valley visible on the westerly edge of the Santa Rita Mountain Range. This enormous chunk of rock can be seen from Tucson, and boasts nearly 1,000 feet of vertical rock face.
No one really seems to know just how or when it got its name, but when looking at the profile of it, from either north or south, the shape is unmistakable. This peak was named “ Pacacho de Diablo or Devils Peak” on the 1887 Rand McNally map, that early settlers to this area commonly used for geographic landmark.
The drive to the Chino Canyon trailhead requires a high clearance vehicle; though with four wheel drive, one might be able to drive further than this description suggests, depending upon current conditions of the rough road snaking up Chino Canyon. The topography resembles a Box Canyon of sorts to us?!
The two hiking routes join at the head of Chino Basin, and then follow a decaying road bed that once served the abandoned Quantrell Mine, high up in Chino Canyon. Roughly a mile short of the mine, an unmaintained hiker’s route to Elephant Head leaves the road and plunges steeply into upper Chino Canyon and then climbs to the broad saddle east of the peak.
The Quantrell Mine is not unlike many other mines on the south side of the Santa Ritas. Places like Dunesque and Harshaw have stood the test of time and serve as reminders of what once drew men into these mountains. The Forest Service reports that Quantrell once produced large amounts of gold and silver in its better years. Today the only thing that sets it apart from the numerous other mines and prospects that litter the winding course that bears its name is its sheer size and the plurality of the works left on site. Quantrell boasts remains of loading works, three large tunnels, and a massive scree hill that can be seen on the Google satellite image of the area.
The views to the east of Mt. Hopkins and its Multiple Mirror Telescope are excellent.
Elephant Head drops sharply into Chino Canyon. The Quantrell Mine trail climbs east (right) away and the Elephant Head trail continues down canyon. The trail winds its way up loose rock and reaches the first of several old mines after about a quarter of a mile. This initial section of trail seems to see a lot of use by ATV trafficl. An OHV trail connects to Quantrell from Chino Canyon. Apparently, the trail beyond this first mine seems to only use by bikes, equestrians, and hikers. The trail climbs away from the first mine and passes several more spectacular forests of Santa Rita Prickly Pear, before winding its way west and narrowing in places. Its easy to see how this was once a road traveled by motorized vehicles.
Many of the minor canyons the trail encounters see it built up using crushed stone native to the area as support. In a couple of places these supports are crumbling or gone completely.
The hills have washed down and trees sprung up, leaving the trail impassible to vehicles as it winds its way around to the west.
Shortly after winding back east, Quantrell Mine is visible off on the hillside below the minor peak to the south that houses a few television and cell phone towers. This final stretch of trail is pleasant and easygoing. You now enter juniper and pinon and finally feel like you're actually in the Santa Ritas.
A few paces before the mine a route marked by a large cairn breaks due west toward Elephant Head, and eventually achieves its summit. The trail approaches the mine and its large tailing piles after roughly four-tenths of a mile of following the ridge. The final section of trail winds its way north and then turns southeast to climb atop the mine tailings.
Amazing views of Chino Canyon and Elephant Head dominate. Care should be exercised around the mine and its tailings.
The Quantrell Mine trail approaches and seamlessly becomes the down-canyon section of Elephant Head. The trail will take you past the ruins of the mine workings, but even more impressive is the road construction. Hand laid rocks form the support for the road bed, built by Chinese workers in the early 1900's.
