Armagh Planetarium in 360 Degree Video - Northern Ireland
The Planetarium and Observatory in Armagh is an amazing place to visit for the day. Check out this short 360 degree video on the place and see if it ticks off all your star gazing ambitions :-) Hope you enjoy! (
Visiting Armagh Planetarium will be like taking a break from all the cultural related museums and places that you will get to check in Northern Ireland and also will feed your knowledge about astronomy and give those who already love it the chance to know more and take a step closer.
Armagh Planetarium is a world renowned astronomical educational establishment that was opened back in 1968 and its main purpose was to bring the world of astronomy to the people. This educational facility is different because what we found out is that it tends to carry information for every single person, starting from those going to nursery and ending with adults as well who might want to enhance their knowledge about the world of astronomy or even start their journey in it.
Since the mission of Armagh Planetarium is to promote the knowledge and understanding of astronomy and related sciences, it also tries to make the journey that schools and other visitors make to the place one that is not delivered in so much of an educational way, but instead let people perceive all the information in a way that don't give them the feeling of teaching. For schools, the place always tends to work on the concept of asking children some questions to let them engage through the answers.
It was a good experience for us - me and Michelle and not just the kids :-) - and we really enjoyed being in that theatre-like place which gives visitors the chance to sit back and get entertained with the educational shows that bring the stars, the planets, and spacecraft in full color on the surface of the planetarium's dome as narration, sound effects, and music take us through an educational journey about the wonders of the universe.
Armagh Planetarium is situated in Armagh city in Northern Ireland and it is close enough to the city centre where Armagh Observatory is found in about 14 acres of landscaped grounds which is known as the Armagh Astropark.
It is really interesting to get to know more about the planet you are living in as well as those other ones surrounding it and that is exactly the thing that brought us to Armagh Planetarium and got us to walk through it and see what it has from information to offer us - it was really an informative trip which we are happy about doing.
Just next to the planetarium, there is the observatory where around 25 astronomers are based, studying stellar astrophysics, the sun, solar system astronomy, and the Earth's climate - this is another place that you could explore in the Astropark while visiting Armagh Planetarium and where you could also get some information that will enhance the knowledge you already have.
You might consider this trip as some kind of educational one, but there are still other beautiful places that you could check and visit in Armagh, Northern Ireland ( From these places that one could visit in Armagh city, there is Navan Centre and Fort which is about the Celtic myths of the Ulster Cycle ( St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral is also another important destination in this city ( Armagh Cathedral is also a must visit ( and there is also Armagh County Museum (
Don't worry about the idea of taking your kids to the observatory because what you will find out later is that you too got the chance to receive some good information which you might have never even thought about trying to search for - which was what happened with me while being there and is one reason why I loved the place.
We have tried to bring this trip in a 360 degree video in order to give people the chance to enjoy their time in the planetarium and feel as if they are the ones standing there - even help those who might be facing some problems in going to the place and checking it all by themselves - so we hope you get that feeling and enjoy being in the place.
The planetarium is a registered charity and that is another thing we love about the place and one thing that got us excited to go and check it all by ourselves - and we even recommend it for all those who will be in Armagh city or will be near and could pass by during their stay - they will never regret the time they are going to spend there.
Have you been to Armagh Planetarium or Observatory before? What will you mention as being the highlight of your visit which made you fall in love with the place as a whole?

Clare Glen Tandragee Co. Armagh
Clare Glen offers a beautiful river walk near Tandragee Co. Armagh. A circular walk of approximately 2.25 miles takes you along the banks of the River Cusher through a beautiful wooded glen. There are other walks within the Glen - some which climb fairly steeply from the main path - but are every bit as tranquil and beautiful. Well worth a visit at any time of the year.
Armagh County Museum - Orchard County's History - NI
Armagh County Museum is a small building located in the city centre. Armagh city is in County Armagh Northern Ireland.
The museum includes many old wedding dresses, military uniforms, railway memorabilia and natural history specimens. If tempted to visit Armagh - its definitely worth a stop. Especially for anyone interested in old costumes - including the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
Armagh is a medium-sized city that is located in county Armagh, Northern Ireland, and although it is an old city when it comes to the history that it carries, it is considered not much of an old one when it comes to receiving the city name which it received in 1994.
One of the most famous historical places and touristic attractions in Armagh city is St. Patrick's Cathedral which was built by Saint Patrick back in 457 and which eventually became the ecclesiastical capital. It is also known that Saint Patrick is the reason behind making this city one that is educational and religious (
It is not just about St. Patrick's Cathedral that one would visit Armagh city to know more about its history, but there are also some other important historical places which happen to be educational at the same time and one of them happen to be Armagh County Museum.
Armagh County Museum is a museum that is located in Armagh city, just on the edge of the tree-lined Mall in the centre of the city. Armagh County Museum is considered the oldest County Museum in Ireland since it opened back in 1937. While walking the streets of Armagh city, there are a couple of buildings which you might come across and ask yourself what these are, one of them happen to be Armagh County Museum.
The interesting thing to know about this building is that the building passed through other steps before becoming a museum and this tells much about the history of the building and how old it is. Inside this museum, one will get the chance to know more about the stories of those people who lived, worked or even had any other kind of connections with Armagh city.
Armagh County Museum offers visitors different things that they could see and which will let them know more about the history of this city, the collection inside range from local history and fine art to archaeology and natural history; in other words we could say that it is the ideal place for people to explore and experience a flavor of the famous orchard county.
There are lots of stories inside this museum which are delivered through the things that are displayed inside, there are wedding dresses, military uniforms, rural crafts and lots of other things with every single one of them telling its own story and the story of the person who was related to it; every one of them will tell its story that has been there throughout the history.
It is not just about the things which are displayed in the museum, but it is also about the exhibitions which are held there. There are some temporary exhibitions held in the museum that highlight objects from the collections and material borrowed from further afield. Since this is working with the local community, there is a venue which is open for a wide variety of exhibitions that include the stirring music of the pipes and the best of contemporary works by local artists.
There is always something to explore in every single city you manage to visit and go to and when it comes to Armagh city in Northern Ireland, there are different places to check in addition to St. Patrick's Cathedral and Armagh County Museum, there is also the Famous Armagh Observatory and Planetarium which has been there since a very long period of time but which has gone through lots of advancements to be in the same form it appears in today (
There is also the famous Navan Fort that is considered also from the things that highlight this city and one of the places that people tend to visit Armagh city for ( which is one of our favorite places to visit and one of those which we will keep recommending for those asking about places to visit when they are in Armagh city, county Armagh.
Armagh city is one of the old historical cities in Northern Ireland which is filled with stories told through the touristic places that people tend to go to and visit and which are part of those buildings that usually grab the eyes and bring people to come inside them and discover more.
We have been to Armagh city before and visited Navan Fort, Armagh County Museum, Armagh Planetarium and Observatory, and we have also checked St. Patrick's Cathedral, but we still believe that there are other things which we have to visit in this medium-sized city and get to know more about its history (

Armagh Cathedral - Saint Patrick's Cathedral
This stunning Cathedral that is located in Armagh city is St. Patrick's Cathedral - or as it is sometimes referred to Armagh Cathedral - which overlooks this beautiful city and brings back history that is related to Saint Patrick who was behind building the church.
For this cathedral to come to life, it went through different building phases that started in 1840 and ended in 1904, and it was mainly built in order to serve as the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Armagh, the original Medieval Cathedral of St. Patrick having been transferred to the Protestant Church of Ireland at the time of the Irish Reformation.
This Cathedral stands on a hill that is known as Sandy Hill and so does its Anglican Counterpart; this is the reason why this cathedral overlooks the whole city of Armagh and makes one important historical attraction for those coming to visit the city and check what it has to offer them.
This cathedral which was built by Saint Patrick has gone through years of construction and there were those times in which the construction phase was the most slow. One of the longest gaps in this construction process was during the years of the Great Famine since the cathedral funds were diverted to the more pressing cause of the famine relief.
Since it took lots of years for this cathedral to come to life and open its doors to the people of Armagh, there were different Archbishops who were behind the work done in this cathedral. Archbishop William Crolly negotiated the current site for the cathedral and the original architect was Thomas J. Duff Newry. Primate Joseph Dixon who took the work from 1852 to 1866, declared East Monday as a Resumption Day, not just for the financial contributions for the cathedral, but also for the first bazaar that he organized and for which there were different gifts sent over, such as the grandfather clock which is now standing in the cathedral sacristy.
After the death of architect Thomas Duff, J. J. McCarthy took over and he even came up with a new plan but which was not entirely followed, it was used as a continuous plan for what Duff initially started. Under Archbishop Daniel McGettigan the cathedral was completed and he even witnessed the construction of the seven-terraced flight of steps leading from the cathedral gates to the piazza in front of the west door, and he also completed to make other additions since he built the Archbishop's house in 1879-1877 and the sacristan's lodge in 1884-1886 just inside the cathedral gates.
And eventually came Cardinal Michael Logue who was the one to bring lots of changes to the cathedral and since the interior of the cathedral was dull and undecorated, he even traveled to Italy on his personal expenses to see what the Vatican city has and try to implement some things from it; the walls decorated with mosaic, the stained glass windows, the oil ceilings, and every other thing was the work of Logue.
We have to say that St. Patrick's Cathedral in Armagh city is a piece of art, whether from the inside or from the outside, and this goes for the different eras it has been built in and the different minds who helped in adding different ideas to its building phase - it is definitely a place which those coming to Armagh city for the first time should visit and check.
St. Patrick's Cathedral has been built in the Gothic Revival Style and that was one of the reasons why the plan that Duff has placed was never changed afterwards by those other architects who came after. The interesting thing about the completion of this cathedral is that it was completed mainly by using Irish materials and workmanship, which means that it is a locally built cathedral.
The cathedral later on went through a restoration phase that took place in 2003 for major structural repairs that needed to be done and this also included restoring and enhancing the interior decoration and the upgrading of the existing facilities. There were different changes done to the cathedral and there were even things that were transported to other places to make a new one for praying and meditation.
Being in Armagh city, Northern Ireland, urges you to walk through the city in general and check some of the most famous places that is found there and which will even attract you generally with their buildings ( There are some recommendations which we have, such as Armagh County Museum ( Navan Fort ( Armagh Planetarium and Observatory ( as well as some other buildings like the library for example.
This is one of the most famous Cathedrals in Northern Ireland and one that carries great history behind; it should be already on your list!

Navan Fort Armagh - Navan Fort Archaeology to Celtic Myths
Visit Navan Fort and Centre in Armagh - the famous home of the Red Branch Knights and listen to the stories from the Ulster Cycle of tales (
Considering the different places which one could visit in Armagh city in Northern ireland, Navan Fort is usually placed among the list for the history that it carries behind. Navan Fort is an ancient ceremonial monument near Armagh city in Northern Ireland, which according to history is one of the great royal sites of pre-Christian Gaelic Ireland and the capital of the Ulaidh.
Navan Fort is a large circular hilltop enclosure, that is marked by a bank and a ditch, where a circular mound and the remains of a ring barrow are found inside. There are some investigations that say something other than what we tend to see today, it says that there were once some buildings on the site that include a huge round-like structure that has been always seen and regarded as a temple.
It was believed that Navan was a pagan ceremonial site and was regarded as a sacred space, and it was featured prominently in the Irish mythology, especially in the tales of the Ulster Cycle.
Navan Fort is not a trip that you will be making to this destination only, but it is actually the heart of the larger Navan Complex which includes the ancient sites of Haughey's Fort (an earlier hilltop enclosure), the King's Stables (a manmade ritual pool), and Loughnashade (a lake which has yielded votive offerings).
Navan comes from the Irish name Eamhain Mhacha which is known to be an anglicisation of the Irish An Eamhain which has been interpreted as Macha's Twins or Macha's brooch.
According to how people describe this place, it is where myth and reality meet. Navan Centre and Fort is actually one of the most important archaeological sites to visit in Northern Ireland and this goes back to the story about the place and about the legendary Emain Macha, the ancient goddess of war and fertility, who scored the earth with her brooch pin and traced the famous outline of this sacred stronghold of the hero Cu Chulainn, home of the famous Red Branch Knights and Ulster Cycle of tales.
In this place, you will be taken back in time to 2,000 years and experience how people used to live their lives, how they did manage to survive, and what their homes even looked like; this place will let you wander with your mind through the stories which will be unfolded in front of your own eyes.
In addition to the things which one will get to experience in Navan Fort in order to know more about the history of the place, this is also considered a good chosen place for kids for the amount of fun they will have since they could get the chance to get dressed in costumes to experience the life as a Celt, completing trails to get prizes at the end, digg in the archeo-pit to uncover bones, coins and sometimes even teeth, and that of course comes in addition to exploring the discovery room and playing in the outdoor activity - it is a place that would excite both adults with the information they will receive, and kids with those different opportunities they will get.
This was one of the exciting trips we ever had in Northern Ireland, not just for travelling back in time, but also for receiving this information in that manner and through these ways - it made the whole thing appear to be more interesting and got us even more excited about the idea of wandering the whole place and recommending it for other people who will be visiting Armagh city.
If you are going to be in Armagh city in Northern Ireland ( and you are wondering about those touristic places which you should pass by and visit then there are a couple of ones to keep in your mind and this will include: Armagh Planetarium and Observatory ( Armagh County Museum ( St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral (Armagh Cathedral) (
When you come to visit Navan Fort in Armagh, you should come prepared to learn the skills of those old people during their old times that let them survive as ancient warriors, or else sit and relax and give your imagination the chance to wander back in time through the stories which will be told about the old people who used to live there.
This is definitely an interesting place to visit and know more about the history of the Celts and how they used to live, and not just that, but also get the chance to be involved with the different ways and techniques they used to follow in cooking and in other things related to their life styles.
It is a place that you should definitely visit and get to know more about the history of the Celts - never miss such a chance!
