Phenomenal ARMENIAN FOOD at Sherep Restaurant - Citrus Lamb, BBQ Fish & Lavash | Yerevan, Armenia
My second full day in Armenia continued in the capital city, Yerevan. Come along with me as I try Armenian food at Sherep Restaurant, including citrus lamb, BBQ fish, and lavash in Yerevan!
Armenia Travel:
My adventure began with my friend Vanuhi from Armenia Travel at a handicraft market. Right off the bat, I saw handmade jewelry, handmade and hand-painted clay cups, and large wine jugs.
Further on were wooden crafts. I saw a man carving the Armenian alphabet and designs of grapes and crosses in a piece of stone. His work was beautiful and time-consuming!
Then, I met some clothing makers, who let me try on a red jacket. Next were crafts from Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia. There was a lot more to see, but I was starving, so we headed over to Sherep Restaurant!
After 5 minutes, we arrived there. It’s a fancy, modern restaurant and is the first in Armenia with an open-air kitchen.
I ordered a glass of wine; 3 types of Armenian bread; a cheese board with figs, walnuts, string cheese, and three other cheeses; veggies wrapped with eggplant; a fresh herb salad; and a greens and meat salad.
I liked the semi-sweet wine and loved the grilled veggies wrapped in roasted eggplant. The peppers and carrots inside were almost caramelized. It was phenomenal, oily, a little sweet, and had so many different flavors!
Next was the salad with veal, sweet walnut sauce and cheese. It was fresh and crunchy, and I loved the tenderness of the veal. The cheese was really nice as well. It was light and gamy!
Up next was the cheese plate! The lavash was so great with the walnut and different cheeses. It was so good! I followed it with a nice fig!
Next was baked lamb, which was citrusy and had orange zest on it. I guessed that it was cooked in an orange sauce as well. It was super fresh and I could tell it had never been frozen. I loved the fat on it. It was so tasty! It came with citrusy mashed potatoes, which were different but good!
Then, I started on the trout. I had to be careful of bones and spines, so I dug through it and picked them out. The trout was so buttery! It was a phenomenal trout! I ended the meal with another phenomenal red wine. It was full-bodied, sweet, and fruity!
After lunch, we headed back out to Sergei Parajanov Museum.
Sergei Parajanov was a controversial Soviet film director whose cinematic style broke away from Soviet Realism, the only sanctioned artform in the USSR. He was imprisoned many times due to his controversial work, lifestyle, and behavior.
The museum was founded in 1988 and showcases another side of his artistry: his plastic artwork! On the first floor are pieces dedicated to his family, and on the second are pieces he made from broken pieces of china, beads, shells, and more. There’s also a movie hall where you can see clips from his films. The next part of the museum shows his furniture, and the final area contains artwork he created while in prison.
It’s a beautiful museum. One of my favorite pieces was his elephant made from his friend’s luggage! The Soviets couldn’t imprison him for having an open mind, so they put him in jail for being gay instead.
Parajanov was a genius! He was a filmmaker and also did glass work, clay work, silver work, and more. The glass work was really impressive. I saw three different fish he made from glass, a representation of a flower, and more. He also wrote and drew on dishes after a dinner party!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me to have Armenian food at Sherep Restaurant in Yerevan! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Yerevan - Unknown Armenia (in German)
YEREVAN - UNKNOWN ARMENIA (IN GERMAN)
A program by NDR Fernsehen German television channel (June 22, 2014 broadcast)
Enjoy a sneak preview of a capital city that has managed to preserve its ancient traditions, culture and architecture while integrating the latest innovations and technology.
The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC by king Argishti I at the western extreme of the Ararat Valley. After World War I, Yerevan became the capital of the First Republic of Armenia as thousands of survivors of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire settled in the area. The city expanded rapidly during the 20th century as Armenia became part of the Soviet Union. In a few decades, Yerevan was transformed from a provincial town within the Russian Empire, to Armenia's principal cultural, artistic, and industrial center, as well as becoming the seat of national government.
Yerevan is home to dozens of museums, art galleries, concert halls, city parks, churches and many other attractions. The most prominent of these are the National Gallery of Armenia, The State Opera House, The Cafesjian Museum of Art, Sergei Parajanov Museum, The Matenadaran Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, “Ararat” Brandy Factory and Armenian Genocide Memorial.

FAMOUS ARMENIANS | ЗНАМЕНИТЫЕ АРМЯНЕ
Thought you knew nothing about Armenians? Think again - here are some of our most famous people!
The Armenian people are an ethnos, which belongs to the large Caucasian racial group of peoples, that have inhabited the Armenian Highlands since the Stone Age. The earliest possible record identified with Armenians, is from Sumerian records from around 2,700 BC, in which the Armenians are referred to as the sons of Haya, after the regional god of the Armenian Highlands.
Oral history explains the origin of the Armenian people as being the direct descendants of Noah's son Japheth. Armenians call themselves Hay and identify their homeland not by the term Armenia but as Hayastan. In the Bible, the area designated as Armenia is referred to as Ararat, which the Assyrians referred to as Urartu.
The indigenous people of the land of Ararat, Armenians shaped their national identity with the rise of powerful Armenian kingdoms, being the first nation to have adopted Christianity as a state religion, and the creation of the Armenian alphabet, which spurred the development of literature, philosophy and science.
Armenians are born survivors. Since the start of their history over 3,000 years ago Armenians have been the subject of all kinds of atrocities, foreign domination, natural disasters, hardships and genocide. Particular historical fate of the Armenian people formed such features of national character as expressive national pride and merit, love for their land, hospitality, surprising diligence, energy and perseverance.
The number of Armenians in the world counts approximately 10 million people, of whom around 3 million people live in the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. Another 3 million Armenians live in various countries of the ex-Soviet Union, mainly in Russia. About 2 million Armenians are dispersed in the Americas. About 1.5 million Armenians live in various European countries, and 500,000 Armenians live in the Middle East and Africa. There are 50,000 Armenians in Turkey, 4,000 in Cyprus and 20,000 in Australia.
The most common ending for the Armenian last name is ian, or yan (Kim Kardashian, William Saroyan). When Armenians moved from Armenia or from the Middle East, some changed their last names to adapt better to their new societies. Sometimes the ian or yan ending was dropped and the root kept, such as Charles Aznavour (was Aznavourian), or Andy Serkis (originally Sarkissian).

Yerevan,Erivan:
Yerevan (sometimes spelled Erivan is the capital and largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Situated along the Hrazdan River, Yerevan is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of the country. It has been the capital since 1918, the thirteenth in the history of Armenia, and the seventh located in or around the Ararat plain.
The history of Yerevan dates back to the 8th century BC, with the founding of the fortress of Erebuni in 782 BC by king Argishti I at the western extreme of the Ararat plain. Erebuni was designed as a great administrative and religious centre, a fully royal capital. By the late ancient Armenian Kingdom, new capital cities were established and Yerevan declined in importance. Under Iranian and Russian rule, it was the center of the Erivan Khanate from 1736 to 1828 and the Erivan Governorate from 1850 to 1917, respectively. After World War I, Yerevan became the capital of the First Republic of Armenia as thousands of survivors of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire arrived in the area. The city expanded rapidly during the 20th century as Armenia became part of the Soviet Union. In a few decades, Yerevan was transformed from a provincial town within the Russian Empire to Armenia's principal cultural, artistic, and industrial center, as well as becoming the seat of national government.
With the growth of the economy of the country, Yerevan has been undergoing major transformation as many parts of the city have been the recipient of new construction since the early 2000s, and retail outlets as much as restaurants, shops, and street cafés, which were rare during Soviet times, have multiplied. As of 2011, the population of Yerevan was 1,060,138, just over 35% of the Republic of Armenia's total population. According to the official estimate of 2016, the current population of the city is 1,073,700. Yerevan was named the 2012 World Book Capital by UNESCO. Yerevan is an associate member of Eurocities.
Of the notable landmarks of Yerevan, Erebuni Fortress is considered to be the birthplace of the city, the Katoghike Tsiranavor church is the oldest surviving church of Yerevan and Saint Gregory Cathedral is the largest Armenian cathedral in the world, Tsitsernakaberd is the official memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, and several opera houses, theatres, museums, libraries, and other cultural institutions. Yerevan Opera Theatre is the main spectacle hall of the Armenian capital, the National Gallery of Armenia is the largest art museum in the Republic of Armenia and shares a building with the History Museum of Armenia, and the Matenadaran repository contains one of the largest depositories of ancient books and manuscripts in the world. The neoclassical Republic Square is the center of the city and the monumental Cascade steps lead from the city center to Victory Park, home of a Luna Park and the statue Mother Armenia overlooking Yerevan.Wikipedia

A weekend in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia
Yerevan is the capital of Armenia, a country located in the Caucasus, bordering Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Iran. It is largest city of Armenia as well as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
In addition to this video, also check out my blog post 10 reasons why I fell in love with Yerevan, Armenia:
In this video, you will see Yerevan's most important sights and tourist attractions, including the following:
Republic Square can be considered the main square of Yerevan. The Government House, the History Museum and the National Gallery, the Marriott Hotel and several other government buildings are located on this huge square. Originally designed by Alexander Tamanyan in 1924, Republic Square is the favorite hangout of the locals. With its unique pink neoclassical buildings and the reflecting pool, Republic Square can easily be considered Yerevan’s architectural highlight. What I found remarkable about this square was the unified architectural style – all buildings share the same pink-ish and yellow-ish neoclassical design.
The Cascade is a staircase that connects Yerevan’s center (Kentron) with the Monument neighborhood. It consists of multiple levels and a total of 572 steps. Apart from its architectural magnificence, the Cascade offers sweeping views of the city and, on clear days, mighty Mount Ararat in the background.
The Cafesjian Center for the Arts is an arts museum located within the Cascade complex. It offers a variety of exhibitions and dozens of modern and contemporary sculptures by well-known international sculptors. The sculptures are scattered around Cascade Park, the green area in the lower section of the Cascade complex.

UNDERRATED VEGAN TEA HOUSE IN ARMENIA | Yerevan, Armenia ????????
YEREVAN, ARMENIA - Armenia is one of my favorite countries in the world, seeing as I have been back here to visit three times now. When it comes to plant based foods, the Armenian cuisine is not very suitable to the plant based lifestyle. But there are a few pioneering entrepreneurs in Yerevan who are pushing the needle forward and bringing plant-based options to the city. One shop that embodies this spirit and is a joy to visit when I am back in Yerevan is Shanti Tea House.
If you enjoy beautiful scenery, architecture and love to indulge in traditional Armenian cuisine, I highly recommend you to visit the country of Armenia on your next adventure. Remember to add Yerevan to your itinerary. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this beautiful country.
