Snow blankets age-old horse ranch

Snow has blanketed a thousand-year-old horse ranch in Zhangye City, northwest China, turning it into a beautiful scroll of landscape painting.

The Shandan Military Horse Farm is located in the middle of the Hexi Corridor, an important route that is part of the ancient Silk Road. It is one of the oldest and largest horse farms in the world, tracing back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – 8 AD). The snow added a silvery-white touch to the nearby Qilian Mountain, providing an ideal winter playground for the thousands of horses herded there.

President Xi Jinping makes inspection tour in NW China's Shandan

Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Shandan County of Zhangye City, northwest China's Gansu Province, on August 20 as part of an inspection tour. President Xi visited Shandan Bailie School, exploring the local vocational education system. He also paid a visit to the Shandan horse ranch and examined the Qilian Mountain’s ecosystem restoration and protection work.

Qinghai Province is situated in the northeastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau which is known as the Roof of the World”. Qinghai is named after the Qinghai Lake, the largest lake in China. Qinghai is famous for its unique natural scenery and culture.

Nianbaoyuzhe (Chinese: 年宝玉则) is a holy mountain and a national park in Guoluo Plain with its main peak being at an elevation of 5,369 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by around 160 beautiful lakes.

It is also a perfect hiking place for photographers and outdoor lovers.

Best time to go to Qinghai is in June, July and August when the flowers are everywhere.

The Shandan Army Racecourse (Chinese: 山丹军马场) is the largest horse farm in Asia and the oldest horse race in the world. An annual horse racing festival is held here in July and August.

Xianmi National Forest Park in Menyuan county offers wonderful countryside and primeval forest landscapes.

Located in the Qilian Mountains, the Qilian County (Chinese: 祁连县) enjoys the high reputation of 'Oriental Switzerland’ because of its splendid scenery found every year between June and August.

Zhuo'er Mountain, an example of the Danxia landform (various landscapes found in China that consist of a red bed characterized by steep cliffs”), is made up of red sandstone and other conglomerates.

Beacon towers, also called watch towers or guard towers, are the oldest telegram system probably in the human history. In ancient times, if intruders approached, soldiers on the tower would create smoke in the daytime and light a fire at night to inform their troops.
