The National Museum of Damascus opened its doors to the public once more on Sunday, after being closed for the past seven years due to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Visitors were able to see a collection of artefacts recovered by the Syrian Arab Army alongside archaeological findings from the prehistoric, historical, classical and Islamic epochs. Many of the country's archaeological sites were destroyed or badly damaged as a result of the ongoing fighting, but many of the museum's most precious pieces were hidden around the country for safe keeping until now.

Syria army continues battle near Damascus
/
The Syrian army continues to fight foreign-backed militants near a refugee camp outside the capital Damascus and inflicts losses on them, Press TV reports.
On Monday, the Syrian soldiers as well as Palestinian volunteer fighters were engaged in heavy battles against the militants near the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp.
The Syrian soldiers and the Palestinian fighters have been advancing towards a pivotal square at the camp.
God willing, we are fifteen meters away from Al-Regie square and we are advancing. Soon, we will control it. We are in a very tight spot because of how close the buildings are to each other. As we advance, the streets will be wider, we can gain more ground, said a Palestinian fighter.
The Yarmouk camp is home to the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria. The camp turned into a flashpoint area in Damascus when unrest broke out in the Arab country in 2011.
Syrians Celebrate 70th Army Day
Syrians celebrated the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Syrian army in Damascus on Saturday.
Around 400 soldiers participated in the array and weapons such as heavy machine guns and mortars were displayed during the show.
The most important task for the army is to protect the people and the Syrian territory. Only the army can protect us. We have to join hands,” said a woman.
“The army signifies victory. The army has made sacrifices for Syria. The soldiers are from our brothers, friends and neighbors. We respect them. Without them, we could not stand here today,” said another audience member.
The Syrian army, established in 1945, was greatly weakened after the eruption of the Syrian crisis in 2011. It has been reduced from an initial strength of about 320,000 men to an estimate of 150,000, according to Institute for the Study of War.
However, it still plays the most important role in fighting against the extremist groups.
“Today is the Army Day. It is also an important festival for Syria. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Syrian army. It was this army that overthrew the French colonial rule and now they are fighting various extremist groups,” said Mowafak Joumaa, a former commander of the Syrian army.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid respect to the soldiers in a written statement before the Army Day and a series of photo exhibitions will be held as a part of the celebration.

Syria: Aleppo museum reopens after years-long closure

The National Museum of Aleppo has reopened in the Syrian city on Thursday, following its closure in 2012 amid heavy clashes.
The museum was founded in 1931, occupying a small Ottoman palace. Following the Directorate of Antiquities' decision, the palace was dismantled and replaced with a modern structure some three decades later. The museum hosts items from many historical periods, including the Late Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the classical period. The museum also exhibits finds from numerous archaeological sites, including those from northern Syria.
Member of the Heritage Committee in the Engineers' Association of Aleppo, Mohammad Ismail Ahmad, said that it is a very nice occasion today that the museum is back to work after the destruction that took place in most important locations of Aleppo.
The museum is the place where civilisations in Syria meet, adding that it is a museum for the north of Syria entirely.
The Aleppo museum suffered significant structural damage, including a partial destruction of the concrete roof, after being targeted by numerous missiles and mortars, allegedly fired by militants.

Several buildings in Beit Saber, a town near Damascus, were allegedly destroyed during a missile strike carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Tuesday night, as seen in footage shot in the Syrian capital on Wednesday.
Footage shows the aftermath of the bombing, with multiple collapsed or damaged buildings, cars, and rubble in the streets.
Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Syrian air defence missiles intercepted most of the Israeli missiles and that at least two civilians were killed in the attack.
The IDF said they hit military targets of the Iranian Quds forces and the Syrian army in Damascus on Tuesday night in response to rockets fired from Syria into Israel, and also stated that they were targeting Syrian air defence batteries.

Footage filmed on Thursday shows the extent of the damage inflicted on the Mosaics Museum of the Syrian town of Maarat al-Numan in Idlib province, also known as Khan Murad Basha, after it was recaptured by the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).
According to the director of antiquities and museums of Idlib, Ghazi Alloulo, the outer facade of the museum sustained great damage, however, most of the mosaic artifacts were saved by the protective sandbags that were placed over and around the artifacts after the start of the war.
Maarat al-Numan mosaics museum is nestled in a UNESCO-listed region of ancient villages. It was built in the 16th century, as a khan (Caravanserai) and was later converted into a museum. Among the museum's most prized works is a depiction of the birth and life of Hercules and a mosaic artifact depicting Romeo and Romulus.
According to reports by the UN cultural agency (UNESCO) the Maarat al-Numan Museum was targeted by heavy artillery several times during the combat in 2016 and 2018.

Syria: Foreign tourists visit Palmyra as govt shows area is safe
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
A group of foreign tourists visited the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra on Wednesday, in what appears to be a growing trend with the state media reporting about several such tours in the past months. The visitors were filmed walking among the ruins and taking photographs.
The Syrian Arab Army recaptured Palmyra, known locally as Tadmour, from the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) in March 2017. Militants destroyed large parts of the city including temples, statues and tower tombs.
The Syrian government is aiming to show that the site of global heritage is safe to visit despite occasional fighting in the area. Lebanese media reported that several IS militants were killed east of the city on Wednesday.
