When the South African (Boer) War began in 1899 Tasmania was still an independent colony. Initially the war was popular with the local population, keen to show their support of Britain. It was reported that 15,000 people gathered to farewell the first contingent of troops who went to fight.

Soldiers on fossil hunt DPR/TV/1504
Soldiers from a Sydney based unit helped in a search for fossils in the Forbes, New South Wales, district last week. The diggers, from Fifth Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, based at Holsworthy, were instructed in what to look for by Dr Alex Ritchie, Curator of Fossils at the Australian Museum in Sydney. The search was a joint Army and Museum project. The equipment, enthusiasm and manpower was supplied by the Army, and the expertise by the Museum. The soldiers dug, scratched, shovelled and gently probed for the fossilised remains of an early form of fish required for research by the Museum. The search was for the remains of Bothrioletis, a fish noted for the armour plating over its head and upper body. Specimens were found in two disused road metal quarries. Fishing with pick axe, shovel and jack hammer may seem incongruous but there was water once. Vast lakes covered much of the Forbes area when the Bothrioletis lived back in the days before the birth of man. Led by Captain E. A. Windsor-Clive, an officer of the Coldstream Guards on exchange duty with the Australian Army, the Fifth Battalion party found the excavation a diversion from conventional field training. Their participation is part of a growing concept in the Army to provide adventure training which tests the individual skills and initiative of soldiers in unusual circumstances. Also identified: Sergeant Ray Caldwell of Holsworthy, NSW; Private (Pte) Peter Oakford, 21, national serviceman, of Risdon Vale, Hobart, Tas; Pte Cliff Cornish, 22, of Glenroy, Vic.

An historical film showing members of the Tasmanian Expeditionary Force in 1914.
This version has commentary by Major Chris Talbot from the Australian Army Museum Tasmania recorded on the 18th of December 2014.
Much of the footage is shot at the Brighton Army Camp where you can see Lighthorsemen; soldiers practicing with cannon and marching as well as relaxed and having fun in front of the camera. It also includes footage of a Church Parade through Hobart, junior cadets from the 93rd Battalion and soldiers from South Australia marching on the Queens Domain.

Queens Domain, Hobart
The area called the Queens Domain takes up most of this hill in the centre of the city, including the Botanical Gardens, Government House and the bush land up to the 'look-out' at the top. Recognised as being reserved for the people since the early days of the settlement, and frequently under threat from development, Parliament formally recognised its value as a public space in 1858.

Cascade Brewery - it's a lie! Forgotten Tasmania Episode 18
The traditional story of the Cascade Brewery has been blown away with research by Greg Jefferys. It turns out that Peter DeGraves was a bit of a con man and re-wrote history. It's a ripper of a story and this video is my summary of Greg's excellent paper;
The brewery is currently owned by a public company and has no relationship to Peter DeGraves criminal past. It's also a great to take the tour around the factory.
