Top best places to visit in Sofia, Bulgaria
Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria, lies close to mountains and three different seas.
Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. For the longest time the city was known as The Serdica.
In the center of the city is the Statue of St Sofia, a monumental sculpture and a symbol of the city.
In the vicinity is an ensemble of three government edifices, a prime example of Socialist Classicism architecture, the Largo.
Amid one of these buildings is located the Church of St George, a red brick rotunda that is considered the oldest building in Sofia.
Behind the National Bank and the Largo is the former royal palace, today the National Art Gallery.
Opposite the gallery, in the City Gardens, is the National Theatre, the oldest and most authoritative theater in the country.
A little further is the Military Club, an important social center of the capital.
On the same street is the monument of culture for its historic significance, the National Assembly.
Near the Statue of St Sofia begins also the pedestrian zone and the main commercial street, the Vitosha.
Sofia’s most spectacular modern landmark is the largest multifunctional conference and exhibition center in south-eastern Europe, the National Palace of Culture.
But the most prominent tourist attraction is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches worldwide, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
Sofia has many other sacred temples worth a visit, such as:
The Seven Saints Church, named after Cyril and Methodist and their five disciples.
The Cathedral of St Joseph, the largest Roman Catholic church in Bulgaria.
The Holy Sunday Church, a medieval place of worship that has been destructed and reconstructed many times through the ages.
The Banya Bashi Mosque, built over natural thermal spas is the only functioning mosque in Sofia.
Vis-a-vis is the Central Mineral Baths, nowadays a history museum.
Nearby is the Central Market Hall and behind it is the largest synagogue in Southeastern Europe, the Sofia Synagogue.
Worth seeing is also the University of Sofia, the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria.
And standing next to it the National Library, that possesses many notable collections of scriptures and old prints.

We took the Istanbul - Sofia express to start our Bulgaria series, ending our time in Turkey. This travel vlog we show what to expect on an overnight train between Turkey and Bulgaria and what it looks like on the 2 Berth Cabin. We are making our way to Bansko, a town in the mountains of Bulgaria, the Pirin national park. The train cost 420 lira for both of us in the sleeper train. Not bad for our own private cabin.

After 5 years of aimless, yet enjoyable, backpacking around the world we found ourselves in New York City battling with depression. Our time spent battling depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. In our vlogs, we talk openly and honestly about our travel experiences, the digital nomad life and depression. We hope our videos can help to inspire you to create a life that makes you happy!

SOFIA - Bulgaria Travel Guide | Around The World
Sofia (Bulgarian: София) is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. 1.3 million people live in the city and 1.7 million people live in its metropolitan area. The city is at the foot of Vitosha Mountain in the western part of the country. Being in the centre of the Balkan peninsula, it is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.
Sofia has been an area of human habitation since at least 7000 BC. Being Bulgaria's primate city, Sofia is a hometown of many of the major local universities, cultural institutions and commercial companies. Sofia is one of the top 10 best places for start-up business in the world, especially in information technologies. Sofia was Europe's most affordable capital to visit in 2013.
Sofia is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bulgaria alongside coastal and mountain resorts. Among its highlights is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, one of the symbols of Bulgaria, constructed in the late 19th century. It occupies an area of 3,170 square metres (34,122 square feet) and can hold 10,000 people.
Sofia holds Bulgaria's largest museum collections, which attract tourists and students for practical studies. The National Historical Museum in Boyana district has a vast collection of more than 650,000 historical items dating from Prehistory to the modern era, although only 10,000 of them are permanently displayed due to the lack of space. Smaller collections of items related mostly to the history of Sofia are in the National Archaeological Museum, a former mosque located between the edifices of the National Bank and the Presidency. Two natural sciences museums — the Natural History Museum and the Earth and Man — display minerals, animal species (alive and taxidermic) and rare materials. The Ethnographic Museum and the National Museum of Military History are other places of interest, holding large collections of Bulgarian folk costumes and armaments, respectively.
Vitosha Boulevard, also called Vitoshka, is a pedestrian zone with numerous cafés, restaurants, fashion boutiques, and luxury goods stores. Sofia's geographic location, in the foothills of the weekend retreat Vitosha mountain, further adds to the city's specific atmosphere.
The city has an extensive green belt. Some of the neighbourhoods constructed after 2000 are densely built up and lack green spaces. There are four principal parks – Borisova gradina in the city centre and the Southern, Western and Northern parks. Several smaller parks, among which the Zaimov Park, City Garden and the Doctors' Garden, are located in central Sofia. The Vitosha Nature Park (the oldest national park in the Balkans) includes most of Vitosha mountain and covers an area of 266 square kilometres (103 sq mi),[88] with roughly half of it lying within the municipality of Sofia. Vitosha Mountain is a popular hiking destination due to its proximity and ease of access via car and public transport. Two functioning cable cars provide year long access from the outskirts of the city. The mountain offers favourable skiing conditions during the winter when multiple ski slopes of various difficulty are made available. Access to the ski slopes is regulated, they are maintained daily and health and safety personnel are available to assist in case of injury. Skiing passes typically allow unlimited access to the ski slopes, cable cars and other transport facilities. Skiing equipment can be rented and skiing lessons are available.

Our first impressions traveling in Sofia Bulgaria
On our very first day exploring Sofia, Bulgaria we encounter many street performers, a mob of football fans and an angry looking guard. Bulgaria is a country we visited on a whim. Having already spent nearly 10 days in Istanbul, Turkey we had just under a week before my Mom arrived. While sitting down and exploring different options to consider (including traveling more in Turkey) we decided to hop on an overnight train bound for Sofia.

Sometimes visiting a destination without much prior research is rather refreshing.
You visit a place with a fresh set of eyes and very few (if any) preconceived expectations.
Our first day exploring Sofia was full of quirky surprises and random encounters.
I couldn't believe the amount of street performers we noticed while randomly roaming around the downtown core.
From male singers belting out throaty tunes to grown adults dressed up as birds on stilts, it was certainly an eclectic combination of performers.
One of my personal favorites was a man wearing a formal suit without a head. Audrey had fun posing with him hamming it up for the camera and camcorder.
As we continued to randomly wander around (we originally started out with a free walking tour but we quickly decided we'd rather do our own thing) we noticed a loud noise coming from a distance.
At first, I thought it was some kind of political rally as I heard sounds of bangs, shouts and random explosions
However, as the mob drew closer I noticed it appeared to be peaceful.
Young men with shaved heads hollered in excitement as they saluted in the air.
It appeared this was some kind of a skinhead Neo-Nazi rally.
Suddenly it dawned upon me that this was most likely a football celebration, which I later was able to confirm.
Irregardless, it was exhilarating (and also scary) to suddenly be caught up in it all.
As if our day wasn't filled with enough random moments, the funniest encounter was still yet to come.
Outside stood a male guard dressed in formal attire wearing a thick winter Ushanka (winter hat).
As I stood from a distance, I used my tiny camcorder to zoom into his face.
With a scowl reminiscent to the wicked witch's guards in the Movie Wizard of Oz, his shifty eyes moved from side to side.
This was hardly the stoic representation of the typical guards I'm used to seeing in Canada or England.
Overall, what a day. From quirky performances to mobs to disgruntled guards, Sofia certainly left a distinct first impression upon me that I'm sure I won't forget anytime soon.

FOOD & THINGS TO DO IN SOFIA CENTER | Sightseeing in the city | Bulgaria Travel Vlog
Sofia city center has some incredible food, things to do, sightseeing and attractions to see. This travel vlog shows Bulgaria and it's food... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
Sophia aka Sofia, is the largest city in Bulgaria and home to some amazing buildings, history and attractions. The city center is the best place to start on your sightseeing hunt and covers a good amount of the best things to do and what to see in Sofia.
Bulgarian food is incredible, but our priority was the traditional Bulgarian breakfast for the purpose of this vlog! Bulgaria has some delicious cuisine, but any country that eats dessert for breakfast is high on our list of things we have to try! Mekitsa in Sofia was a must taste! They call it food, we call it dessert :)
Bulgaria is an easy place to make a travel vlog, city centers like in Sophia make our job easy with deciding what to see. For the most part, the city offers incredible buildings, churches, ancient ruins and age old structures. To really tackle the larger things to do in Sofia you probably need to get out of the city and venture deeper into Bulgaria as a whole. In upcoming travel vlogs we'll also show the other main attractions a few hours away, known as top sightseeing stops, to add some contrast to the concrete of the city along with more food where we can.
Stay tuned for more Bulgaria and Sofia vlogs from in and around the city including a free food tour coming soon.
