Queenstown to Arrowtown Cycling via Arthur's Point
New Zealand December 2019.
What turned into potentially the best cycling trip I have completed since moving to Queenstown started off as a small and not so well planned route from Queenstown to Arrowtown which ended up much more ambitious than expected.
The first section saw me cycling from my home up in Fernhill, down to town and out to Arthur's Point along Gorge Road and crossing the Edith Cavell Bridge over the shotover canyon.
From Arthur's Point I cycled down to the Lower shotover single track which started with climbing a steep hill.
I followed the ridge that runs parallel to the shotover river for a short while, taking in the magnificent sites, including a filming from The Hobbit across the river which was used as the forest at the slopes of the Misty Mountains.
As I began to descend down into the river valley below the trail became more narrow and steep on the hills edge, which made for a thrilling ride.
At the bottom I explored some bizarre looking sand and gravel cliffs before meeting up with my friend Jirka.
Together we headed towards the Queenstown Trail Countryside ride, along the way passing through fields of wild Lupins next to the Shotover River. Lupins were originally introduced to New Zealand as sheep and cattle feed but eventually were intentionally spread throughout the south island of New Zealand for their beauty. Although considered as an invasive species, originating in the America's, the Lupins draw in thousands of tourists every year to admire their beauty. Another plant considered a pest to the area is the bright yellow Scotch Broom but all these invasive colours made for an interesting ride.
Once we reached the Countryside trail we cut through the open rural area of Speargrass Flat to the stunning Millbrook Gold Resort, set on an old Wheat Farm from the 1860's with some of the old rustic buildings still in tact.
Our final section of the journey took us to Arrowtown where we stopped at the Fork and Tap for beer and Pizza before the bus journey home!

Queenstown to Arrowtown Mountainbike Ride
May 2016 we hired two electric mountain bikes from chargeabout bikes in Queenstown New Zealand. We rode from Queenstown to Arrowtown on a gorgeous Autumn day, had lunch and then rode back. On the cycle trails between Queenstown and Arrowtown there are quite a few hills but the bikes make short work of those. You get all the good bits of bike riding with none of the bad bits. It leaves you to focus on the scenery, which is spectacular. The cafe in Arrowtown has a recharge station so you can top-up your bikes while enjoying lunch. Queenstown is simply gorgeous and exploring the region by bike has got to be one of the best options, if you are ever visiting contact chargeabout.co.nz
