Located next to the sea, between Setúbal and the fishing town of Sesimbra, Arrábida Natural Park has incomparable natural beauty, where the blue of the sea alternates with the white tones of the chalk cliffs and the depths of the green vegetation that covers the mountain range.
One of the main attractions of the Park is the wealth of its indigenous vegetation. One of the rare examples of Mediterranean maquis in Portugal can be found here, and its preservation was one of the reasons which led the Arrábida zone to be considered as a genuine international scientific relic. In order to preserve these vegetation species, it is only possible to visit certain areas when accompanied by an official guide indicated by the Park’s services. There are also various accredited companies that organise radical activities, such as speleology, diving and mountain climbing.
If you want to learn more about the animal and plant life, visit the Oceanographic Museum, installed in the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Arrábida, next to Portinho beach. Almost directly in front, it's possible to see the Pedra da Anixa, a small island that constitutes a zoological reserve, due to its underwater vegetation.
In addition to the Serra da Arrábida, the Park also includes other mountain ranges such as the Serra do Risco, which contains the highest peak along the Portuguese mainland coast -- it is a magnificent cliff measuring 380 m high, that overlooks the sea, from which it is possible to appreciate an unforgettable panoramic view over the Atlantic.
The action of the sea against the mountains has originated a line of beaches characterised by fine sand and transparent waters, that we might otherwise believe could only be found in the Mediterranean, such as Figueirinha, Galapos and the Portinho da Arrábida.
The zone was appreciated by Franciscan friars between the 16th and 19th centuries, who inhabited the convent that still exists in the zone and meditated in the isolated chapels dispersed throughout the mountains. Arrábida has excellent conditions for farming activities and pasture, and has thus originated high-quality products. Examples include the wines that can be discovered by following the Costa Azul wine route, which leads visitors to the friendly town of Azeitão where they can sample some delicious cheeses.

PROGRAMME:
Captain Arrábida tours are scheduled for every Saturday and Sunday and are available for groups between 4 and 8 pax, subject to booking. The cost is €150 per pax.
It includes:
A five-hour tour (1pm–6pm);
Lunch at a typical restaurant in Portinho da Arrábida;
Lisbon–Setúbal–Lisbon transfer (exit at Marquês de Pombal).
Tours may also take place during weekdays, for which booking in advance shall be required.

* Tides depend on the Moon and dolphins depend on the tides in order to feed themselves; hence, during certain Moon phases they may happen to move west (towards the ocean) or east (towards the Sado Bay, where Captain Arrábida tours pass).
Captain Arrábida is therefore unable to guarantee the sighting of dolphins.

The Natural Park of Arrábida in Setúbal, Portugal, is an area where there are more than 1,000 species of marine animals and plants and belongs to the European Natura 2000 Network. Was proposed for inclusion in Indicative List of World Heritage and proposal the World Heritage, in 2011.

This time our friends, who recently moved to Portugal, invited us to their place to give us a present and to show us The Nature park of Arrábida, a very beautiful area with mountains and beaches. We all have different skills, the girl is a calligraphist and her boyfriend is a drone pilot. We came up with the idea to use all our skills to create a Christmas greeting for our friends and family in a very special way.
We are very happy that winters in Portugal are warm and sunny and we enjoyed the ocean and a beautiful sunset in Arrábida mountains and filming all this beauty with the drone. We loved Setúbal and we will definitely go there again.

The 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) - The Golden Gate's twin sister was completed in 1966. This suspension bridge across the Tagus River remembers the Portuguese Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974. It has the longest central span in Europe (1013m), longer than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Both bridges are located in regions of high possible seismic activity and their designs are almost identical. The south tower the Lisbon suspension bridge extends for 79m below the water level deep into the solid bed rock. The bridge was originally named Salazar Bridge (Ponte Salazar). The bridge went under extensive expansion in 1995, increasing the number of lanes from 4 to 6. A train line was added below the road level in 1999.
The Sesimbra Castle (Castelo de Sesimbra, Castelo dos Mouros) - The Moorish castle of Sesimbra was one of the first victories for the Christian conquest of Portugal over the Moors in the 12th century.
Azeitao - The Jose Maria da Fonseca Winery Museum is a Legend of the Portuguese wine industry. In Portugal´s heyday, winemakers realised there were profits to be made shipping his vintages to the colonies, particularly Brazil. The moscatel (or muscat) grape has a particularly aromatic flavour with high sugar levels, which makes it ideal for refining into sweet, fortified wines and fortified wines are better able to survive long sea journeys. Jose Maria da Fonseca set up his first winery in the Setubal district south of Lisbon. His reputation was secured with two types of wine - Setubal Moscatel and Periquita - which he created within a year of each other in 1849-50.
The Arrabida Natural Park (Parque Natural da Arrabida) is located on the northern shore of the Sado River estuary in Portugal. The park covers the Arrabida Hills, the Mediterranean-like vegetation and microclimate of which resemble Adriatic locations such as Dalmatia. The highest point in the park is the Serra da Arrabida at an elevation of 499 metres. Two of the park's beaches - Portinho da Arrabida and Figueirinh - are popular among the inhabitants of Lisbon and Setubal. Overlooking the two beaches is the Convent of Our Lady of Arrabida (Convento de Nossa Senhora da Arrabida), a former monastery established in the 16th century.
The city of Setubal is located on the northern bank of the Sado River estuary. In the beginning of the 20th century, Setubal was the most important center of Portugal's fishing industry, particularly sardines. A dolphin colony inhabits the Sado River. Across the river on the south bank lies the peninsula of Troia, a place with vast white/golden sand beaches where several luxury hotels and resorts were recently built. The Troia peninsula can be sighted from the city, across the river.
The Vasco da Gama Bridge (Ponte Vasco da Gama) is a cable-stayed bridge flanked by viaducts and rangeviews that spans the Tagus River in Lisbon. The purpose of Europe´s longest bridge is to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's other bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril), and to join previously unconnected motorways radiating from Lisbon. The bridge was opened to traffic in 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.
Alfredo Marceneiro (1891-1982) - Alfredo Rodrigues Duarte, better known as Alfredo Marceneiro because of his original profession as a woodworker, (marceneiro), was a Portuguese Fado singer, with a singular voice. Marceneiro became a standard against which generations of fado singers are still measured today. In 1984, he was awarded posthumously Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by former President of the Portuguese Republic, General Ramalho Eanes.

Arrabida Nature Park is just 45 minutes drive from the centre of Lisbon and yet it seems like it's in the middle of nowhere. This park is filled with beautiful hiking trails, where we picked one that wasn't too long nor too difficult.
Actually we went for an easy hike, but as it turned out it was much more challenging than we anticipated. And in a good way.
We feel so blessed to have this beautiful nature park of Arrabida in our backyard. This place is simply fantastic and a GREAT place to let your mind unwind.

Praia da Figueirinha (Aerial View) - Arrábida Natural Park
Praia da Figueirinha is an oceanic beach located west of the city of Setúbal, set in the Arrábida Natural Park, in Portugal. The access is from Setúbal through the Rasca Road that winds through the Arrábida Mountain, partly by the sea.
Close by is a wooded area on the banks of the river that flows into it and in summer is used for picnics. The sea is usually calm, so Figueirinha becomes a busy beach during the summer season. A long sandbar emerges during low tide making this beach particularly appealing to children.
Integrated in the Serra da Arrábida, it also has a beautiful view of Troia (opposite) and the Portinho da Arrábida which is located on your right.
It has as support infrastructure a paid parking of 277 places, restaurant, surveillance, awnings and games.
For the seventh consecutive year, the beach bears the Blue Flag, a distinction that attests to the quality of excellence of this seaside area of Setúbal.
