Legends Resort - The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz
Legends Resort of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina is the focus of this edition of The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz with Blair O'Neal. Presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday - GolfHoliday.com.
Blair talks with Matt Biddington, Golf Professional at the Legends Resort and Golf.
Three different championship courses, all 4.5 Stars by Golf Digest says Matt. We'll start off with the Heathland, that opened first back in 1990, and it's definitely the more forgiving of the three. It's a Scottish links style golf course, Par 71, designed by Tom Doak.
The Moorland is the second course. It was rated the 37th most difficult golf courses in the United States by Golf Digest, so it's a little more challenging. A P. B. Dye Design, a lot of elevated tees, elevated greens, very scenic out there.
The Parkland, came a year after that in 1992, and is a more traditional style, tree-lined fairways, and it goes back through the housing developments and the golf villas that we have here on site.
In addition to the three courses we have here on site, we also have a 35-acre lit practice range as well as an acre-and-a-half putting green behind the clubhouse. There a lot of things to do right here.
Can you tell me about one of the toughest holes out here? asks Blair. It would be on the Moorland course, the sixteenth hole, and actually has it's own nickname, so you know its a good golf hole. It's called Hell's Half-acre. It's actually a drivable par four,
but if you don't hit the green, then that's where the Hell's Half Acre comes in. There's a lot of waste areas, a lot of small pot bunkers, a very difficult hole. It's the ultimate risk-reward, and par is a very good score.

Ryan McCarty Shaftesbury Golf & Fish Club Myrtle Beach SC
I met Ryan McCarty, the Director of Operations, at Shaftesbury Golf & Fish Club in the pro shop and later interviewed him in front of the Scottish Castle that is a clubhouse downstairs and five Shaftesbury Suites upstairs. He spoke of owner Paul Himmelsbach and how he caddied as a young lad at Winged Foot Golf Club and brought that golf course to South Carolina. The ownership group of brothers Paul and Jack along with Marvin Arnsdorff started with Heather Glen and Glen Dornoch. Later they converted Himmelsbach family farmland into the Shaftesbury Masterpiece of generous and manicured fairways leading to well-bunkered elevated bent grass greens. Ryan grew up playing golf in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and moved to Myrtle Beach to be in the golf business year round. Though second in the title the fishing in the Waccamaw River behind the castle clubhouse is reported to be as good as the golf by golfers and fisherman alike. AG&TD2014046

Meadowlands Golf Club - Hole #3 - Course Spotlight by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday
MYRTLE BEACH GOLF HOLE OF THE WEEK: NO. 3 AT MEADOWLANDS
Myrtle Beach is full of quality golf courses that don’t attract the spotlight; it’s a byproduct of having 86 layouts in the game’s most popular market.
One such course is Meadowlands Golf Club, located just across the state line in Calabash, N.C. Meadowlands has quietly emerged as a golf package favorite, providing outstanding conditions and, just as importantly, a chance to score.
Golf is a challenging game under any circumstances, but Meadowlands has always placed an emphasis on playability, highlighted by a 2012 renovation project that softened two of the layouts most difficult holes. Our Myrtle Beach Golf Hole of the Week – the par 4 third – was one of the two holes that underwent a facelift.
Now, we are going to give you an inside look at how to play the signature hole at Meadowlands.
No. 3
Par: 4
Yardage: 480 yards (raven tees); 455 yards (heron tees); 408 yards (egret tees); 351 yards (hummingbird tees); 298 yards (red tees).
Handicap: 1
The course’s most memorable hole, No. 3, had a lake that many mid to high handicappers were able to reach off the tee, forcing a layup that often left an approach that was to long for comfort. With that in mind, part of the lake was filled in during the 2012 renovation, allowing players more room to drive the ball, which in turn sets up a more manageable approach.
All the being said, the third hole deservedly remains the No. 1 handicap hole. The hole plays 408 yards from the egret tees – Meadowlands’ version of white tees – which provides plenty of distance.
If your drive stays to the right, you can hit the ball as far off the tee as you would like, but the water begins encroaching much earlier on the left side of the fairway. Optimally, you would hit a 250-yard drive up the right side, leaving a 150+ yard approach that minimizes the length of the carry over water to the green.
The reality is most people can’t hit the ball that far on command. There isn’t a lot of room between the edge of the lake and the front of the green, so the best piece of advice is to play smart. If your drive isn’t great and you have a 180-yard approach that is on the outer limits of what you could reasonably expect to do, use your head.
Don’t be afraid to layup and play the hole as a par 4.5, if that’s what your tee shot dictates. Bogey is much better than what you will likely record if you hit the ball in the drink.
Meadowlands is one of the area’s most playable layouts, but you better bring your ‘A’ game to the third tee box.
Have you played Meadowlands? How have you fared on this hole? Tell us in the comments below!
Possum Trot Golf Club - #13 - Hole Spotlight from Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday
MYRTLE BEACH GOLF HOLE OF THE WEEK: NO. 13 AT POSSUM TROT
July 18, 2017 by Chris King
Possum Trot Golf Club is home to one of the game’s most unique names, but an unforgettable moniker isn’t what brings people back to the course 49 years after its opening.
The North Myrtle Beach layout has long prided itself on being the area’s friendliest course and it delivers on that promise on a couple levels. Possum Trot Golf Club is a classically designed layout and prides itself on providing good old-fashioned customer service.
Staffers greet golfers with a smile and they place an emphasis on pace of play, helping ensure what is generally one of the Grand Strand’s quickest rounds. The challenges at Possum Trot are straight-forward and the greens don’t require a book to read, helping make the layout a player-friendly one from the jump.
Our Myrtle Beach golf hole of the week showcases the best of Possum Trot, providing a challenge without overwhelming players.
No. 13 – Possum Trot
Par: 3
Yardage: 203 yards (blue tees), 163 yards (white tees), 115 yards (gold tees), 106 yards (red tees)
Handicap: 9
On a course that doesn’t feature an abundance of water, it’s the defining trait on Possum Trot’s most memorable hole. The 13th is named, appropriately, “Analysis is Paralysis.”
In a game that often rewards the thinking man, that’s not the case on Possum Trot’s signature hole. A lake threatens from tee-to-green and the length of the hole (163 yards from the white tees) adds to the challenge, but there is some room to miss to the right.
Don’t stand on the tee and overthink the shot; if you do, all you will see is the trouble. Grab the club you are most comfortable with from 160 yards and take a smooth swing.
You don’t have to be perfect to find success on the 13th, so don’t think your way into trouble.
If you are interested in playing Possum Trot and its sister courses – Glen Dornoch, Heather Glen and Shaftesbury Glen – check out Boardwalk Beach Resort’s Glens Group Package.

Thistle Golf Club - The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz with Blair O'Neal
Blair O'Neal, host of The Myrtle Beach Golf Buzz visits The Thistle Golf Club. Presented by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday - golfholiday.com.
TRANSCRIPTION: Blair O'Neal: Hi, my name is Blair O'Neal, host of the Golf Buzz
presented by Myrtle Beach Holiday. Today I'm at the beautiful Thistle Golf
Club and today we're going to go inside and speak to head golf
professional, Gene Weldon.
So, I've made my way into the member's room at the Thistle Golf Club and
I'm with Gene Weldon. Thanks for having me today.
Gene Weldon: My pleasure, been looking forward to this.
Blair: So can you tell us a little bit about the Thistle Golf Club?
Gene: Well, we're located in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. We have 27
holes. Definitely a Scottish flavor. The wind pretty much always blows here as the Scots say,
nay wind, nay golf. So they get plenty of golf in when they come here. The
course itself, a lot of stacked sod bunkers, a few pot bunkers, but it's
wide open. You can really get away with hitting it a little bit crooked
maybe but the greens make up for it.
Blair: Play the low shot.
Gene: Oh yeah.
Blair: On the low end.
Gene: But they're very undulating and fun to play.
Blair: You know, I think it's really interesting, most golf courses have
their tee time spread out nine minutes apart and here you guys do it a
little bit differently, right?
Gene: We do. We have twelve minute tee times, basically what that means to
the golfer is when you're on the first tee with 12 minute times, the group
in front of you is putting out and leaving the green so what that means is
when you get to the second tee, you don't run into the same people that you
just saw. They're on the green down the way. So it spreads it out and
allows the golf course to play maximum four hours, four hours and fifteen
minutes on a busy day. But even a busy day with twelve minute tee times is
not really that busy.
Blair: Yeah. And I imagine it would make it a little more relaxing pace of
play.
Gene: Definitely.
Blair: And I hear that there's a family that's presently living on the
golf course, a family of Bald Eagles?
Gene: We do have a family of Bald Eagles. I've been here about seven and a
half years now and there was one, now there are four. So, we're assuming
it's mom and the boys or the boys and girls, I'm not sure. But we have
actually seen four of them in the air at one time.
Blair: Really?
Gene: And it's quite a sight.
Blair: I bet. I know it's a Scottish layout and inside we have a Scottish
feel to the club house and inside the bar there's an imported bar that's
actually physically imported from Scotland, correct?
Gene: It came out of a little hotel bar up in the northern highlands of
Scotland. We added to it, but you can still the original bar and the dings
in the top of it from all the beer mugs that have been on it.
Blair: Play golf, go inside, have a drink and the specialty drink here I
hear is Scotch. You have a good selection.
Gene: You can pretty much, if it's sold in the United States, the single
malts and the blends, we pretty much have every single one.
Blair: So the Scotch lover this is the place to come.
Gene: Oh, certainly.
Blair: So I hear there's a lot of history here around the golf course.
Gene: We're actually named after the original Thistle Golf Club. It was in
Leith, Scotland. It's not longer there. It was formed in 1815 and we have
the majority of the artifacts on display in the club house, the original
documents for the club, people that had written in. We have them dated
1815, 1818. It's neat to look at if you've never seen the Scottish hand
writing back in 1815, it's absolutely unbelievable.
Blair: Well I took a look and I thought it was really interesting. What
other courses, where are you going to see something like that? So it was
definitely something you guys have that's one of a kind.
Gene: That's true.
Blair: It's not something any other course have.
Gene: No, that is definitely true.
Blair: Yep. And as far making a tee time, how do we go about making a tee
time out here?
Gene: GolfHoliday.com.
Blair: Okay.
Gene: Just go straight to them, or to your package provider through the
hotels, or you can call us direct.
Blair: Sounds good. Thanks so much for having me. The course was amazing,
the clubhouse was amazing. I'm definitely going to come back and play some
golf here soon.
Gene: Sounds great.
Blair: I'm Blair O'Neal and thanks for watching the Golf Buzz. To book
your tee time go to GolfHoliday.com
