Ex-Nihilo and Arrow Leaf Cellar
Anne visited Vernon for the cousin's surprise birthday. To keep us from getting busted, we took her to Ex Nihilo winery at Lake Country for lunch and wine tasting. T he pizza was good by the way. We finished off with dessert at Arrow Leaf Cellar. The view there was amazing. It was a quick and wonderful date. I had my share of wine and pizza. I could not ask for more. :)

Wine Tour in Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley Wine Region
Our visit to Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley wine region.
We left Whistler and made the 8 hour drive to Kelowna. We stayed with family and our daily goal was to explore Kelowna and the Okanagan, taste wines, tour wineries and eat delicious oknagan fresh fruit.
The Okanagan produces 80% of British Columbias wine. There are over 182 licensed wineries with the majority of them situated along the Okanagan lake. Wine has been produced in Kelowna and the Okanagan since the 1850’s. Unfortunately in the early days prohibition had wiped out most of Kelowna’s wineries and it wasn’t until the 1930’s when the wine industry in Kelowna and the Okanagan was revitalized.
There are over 60 different types of grapes that are grown in the Okanagan including, merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, pinot noir, pinot gris, chardonnay, cabernet franc and much more.
We visited Rollingdale Winery, Tantalus Winery, Vibrant Vines, Frequency Winery, Arrow Leaf Winery, Summerhill Pyramid Winery and Ex Nihilo Winery. These wineries are located in various locations throughout Kelowna and you would likely want to limit yourself to 3-4 wineries per day. Please take a taxi or have a designated driver.
We highly recommend taking a trip down to Kelowna and doing a wine tour, it's a ton of fun and very close to Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.

▷ Kelowna is a city in the south of Canada’s British Columbia province. It’s in the Okanagan Valley, on the eastern shore of Okanagan Lake, surrounded by provincial parks, pine forest, vineyards, orchards and mountains. Its downtown area incorporates waterfront City Park and a lakeside cultural district. More than 20 local vineyards offer wine tours and tastings.
▷ Peachland is a district municipality of over 5000 residents in the Okanagan Valley. It is located on the west side of Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada.
▷ The Okanagan is a region in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It's known for its wineries and fruit orchards. The main city of Kelowna, on the shore of huge Okanagan Lake, is surrounded by pine forests and provincial parks. Kelowna's downtown area incorporates waterfront City Park and a lakeside cultural district. The area around the cities of Kelowna, Vernon and Kamloops is home to several ski resorts.
▷ The unique 8-sided Peachland Baptist Church was constructed, mainly by volunteers, in 1910 and served as a place of worship until 1964. Over the years it has functioned as a temporary Municipal Hall, Parks and Recreation Office, Fire Brigade Hall and Public Library.
The picture on the left shows it under construction. Note the peach tree growing in the foreground. Since 1980 the building has housed the Peachland Museum and since 1981, the church building was declared an official British Columbia Heritage site.
Hundreds of historical artifacts, photographs, newspapers and documents are on display. Together, they offer a glimpse into the rich history of Peachland and its people.
The personal histories of pioneer Peachland families are documented in three volumes: Peachland Memories 1 & 2 and the 2009 Centennial Picture Book. The books are available for purchase at the Museum.

Ex Nihilo Vineyards - British Columbia
The Okanagan Valley of British Columbia in Western Canada is home to an ideal Icewine vineyard, known as Ex Nihilo. This vineyard, due to the effects of its microclimate, slope and soils, is considered one of the best sites in the world to produce premium Icewine. The Rolling Stones Icewine is crafted in limited quantity from grapes grown exclusively from this site. Strict vineyard practices are followed throughout the year at Ex Nihilo vineyard to ensure grapes of only the highest quality are used in the production of the Rolling Stones Icewine.
WINEMAKING:
The Rolling Stones Icewine is one of the rarest wines in the world. Our Pinot Noir grapes are left to hang on the vine well into to the winter months. When the temperature reaches -8°C the frozen grapes are handpicked and pressed in the extreme cold. This remarkable process intensifies the sugar, acid and flavors in the grapes, resulting in a wine unlike any other.
TASTING NOTES:
Fresh berry with intense raisin. This wine will also gain complexity with additional cellaring, estimated at 8 - 10 years
WINEMAKERS:
Dr. Allan Marks, Graham Pierce, Rob Thielicke

BC Winegrowers - Gray Monk Estate Winery
Where is the Okanagan Valley wine culture today? Notable Vancouver Sun wine writer Anthony Gismondi explores the region in a three day road trip almost covering the 200 km long valley from north near Vernon to the south near Osoyoos.
In this first video, Anthony visits George and Trudy Heiss, the founders of Gray Monk Estate Winery.
The government said their grapes wouldn’t work at the site they’d chosen. Three years later, they came back to crib their notes. 40 years later, they are one of the largest producing wineries in the valley and Pinot Gris is the number one planted varietal in B.C.
Wineries of the Okanagan: Ancient Hill
Meet Richard Kamphuys, proprietor and winemaker of Ancient Hill Winery located in Kelowna, BC. Richard has been making wine in the Okanagan for over 20 years, and focuses on classic varietals: Pinot Noir, Gewurtraminer and Blaufrankisch. His vineyards are farmed organically, and he focuses on making food friendly, easy drinking wines.

BC Winegrowers Inniskillin Okanagan (Oliver)
Inniskillin Okanagan’s Dark Horse Vineyard sits on the Okanagan Valley’s newest, and only official appellation, the Golden Mile Bench. According to winemaker Derek Kontkanen ‘Dark Horse’ is an appropriate moniker for the stony bench that is home to Inniskillin’s Discovery Series program. The series features a number of varietal wines that are atypical to the south Okanagan. Join us as we discuss the process of looking for the perfect match between grape and terroir. And speaking of perfect pairings Derek takes us on a tour the new Inniskillin Okanagan tasting room where we match the basic tastes to a bevy of famed Inniskillin Okanagan icewines.
