Beautiful arts and crafts of Romania
A visit to the ceramic workshop in Marginea, where the famous Black Pottery is made. Next, we stopped to admire the fine handicrafts at the Maison de Bucovine, and enjoy some excellent homemade tuica, courtesy of owner Mihaela Albu. Lastly, we enjoyed a delicious meal and an egg painting demonstration by Letitia Orsvischi, at her lovely pensiune in Vama. Photos taken by me during our Romanian trip in May, 2006.

Fair Craft - Basket Weaving
In the village of Fofeldea, there are still several Roma families who master the traditional craft of wickerwork. Fofeldea is located between Sibiu and Sighisoara, five kilometers off the main road. Previously, these baskets were used in agriculture and in the yard. The basket weavers and basket makers made these baskets in the cold season and then sold them in different villages. Unfortunately, people in the region today prefer to buy plastic containers. Not least because they are cheaper.
The traditional wicker models from Fofeldea are the corfa and the cylindrical cos. The corfa has the shape of a hemisphere and two handles. The framework is made of hazel and this is then plaited with split hazel and willow. This basket is extremely stable and durable. The advantage of the cos is that it has a straight bottom due to its cylindrical shape and therefore can be used wonderfully as a laundry basket, wastebasket etc. The cos is braided out of willow.
Nicolaie and Stella Subtirel braid almost exclusively corfe and share the work. Nicolaie brings the willows and hazel sticks home and bends the upper frame of the basket. He also splices the hazelnut sticks. Stella is responsible for the weaving and the finer work. Nicolaie is still trying to sell the baskets from his horse-drawn carriage in the various villages.

Medieval Festival Oradea 2018: DAY 3
Every year, at the beginning of July, Oradea Fortress embraces a medieval breath, during the Medieval Festival, one of the biggest festivals of this kind in Romania.
The event revives the time of knights and princesses, and gathers hundreds of fighters in stunning armours, in historical battle re-enactments.
During the third day of our festival, we saw spectacular horseback riding archery contests, we danced and laughed along with cheerful artists, and we witnessed the art of medieval craft-work.

Sighisoara Fortress is a medieval complex of military architecture, civil and ecclesiastical, included in UNESCO patrimony. It is the oldest and continuously entirety inhabited citadel in Southeast Europe. The fortress and medieval burgh were built by Saxon settlers beginning in the twelfth century. The settlement has developed rapidly, so that already in the fifteenth century reached the form that we see today. Flourishing city is largely due to guilds system. The guilds were also responsible for raising and maintaining the city walls (totaling 930 m long) and the 14 towers (of which remained 9). The most important of the towers, the Clock Tower, defend the main gate of the fortress and is its symbol. If it was in the medieval times the town hall, currently houses the Museum of History. In the city are over 160 old houses over 300 years, historical monuments. Video performs a tour of the Fortress, being achieved most of the objectives of tourist interest.

Transylvanian Highlands, ecotourism destination
Green hills with a mosaic of agricultural crops, meadows and forests, Saxon villages and fortified churches all form the set of a genuine fairy tale. Remember, while gently strolling through, to feel the spirit of the place and to breathe in the scents of nature: you are surrounded by wonders.
Some of the old buildings, steeped in history, are on the UNESCO World Heritage List (the fortified churches in Viscri, Saschiz and Biertan), forming ”the last truly medieval landscape in Europe”.

Romanian hobbits, friendship and music
Meet the Romanian hobbits at the Village Museum, next to the biggest park in Bucharest - Herastrau.
With hundreds of houses moved to this location piece by piece, from where they were originally built, this museum will keep you busy for a whole day. Yes, you will come across bordeie, the underground built houses strikingly resembling the little dwellings in the shires. However, there is a perfectly good reason for this.
Find out about Romanian crafts and countryside life before deciding to go visit.
