Art Basel in Basel 2019 | Highlights
Watch highlights of the 2019 edition of Art Basel in Basel, which drew to a highly successful close on Sunday.
In this new video, select gallerists share insights into some of the artworks they exhibited this year. Learn from the experts as Alexander Gray discusses Joan Semmel's largest ever painting, Tornabuoni Art's Ermanno Rivetti presents Alighiero Boetti's acclaimed Mappe series, and Salon 94's Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn sheds light on the origins of Huma Bhabha's colossus We Come In Peace (2018), presented in the Unlimited sector. Also featured are Galerie Buchholz's Peter Curie on Wolfgang Tillmans, Galerie 1900-2000's David Fleiss on his favorite Picabia (clue: it's tiny!), and P.P.O.W.'s Wendy Olsoff on the feminist icon Carolee Schneemann.
Discover these and many more in our highlights video – and share memories using the hashtag #artbasel. The next Art Basel show will take place in Miami Beach from December 5-8, 2019.

Basel, Switzerland what to see in 1 day + Art Basel 2019 | Art and museums
Basel, in Switzerland is a city popular among art lovers mainly for two reasons: Art Basel, the art fair that takes place every year in June, and its museums with collections full of masterpieces.
If you happen to go to a different time than the fair don't worry because there are still many things to see and a couple of days can really fly. If instead, like me, you decide to spend a day in the fair and one day for the city tour here are my suggestions on what to see in Basel.
Let's discover together the Kunstmuseum, the Munsterplatz area, the Beyeler Foundation and much more. But I also tell you about Art Basel 2019 and the works that impressed me the most in the most important and famous art fair in the world.

Meet the Institutions | Kunstmuseum Basel
Opening to the public over 350 years ago, the Kunstmuseum Basel is a living symbol of Baslers’ love of art. Its program unfolds over three striking venues – the Hauptbau, Neubau, and Gegenwart – that are located by the Rhine and operate like ‘three parts of a single organism’s body’, says director Josef Helfenstein. The Kunstmuseum Basel’s collections range from Pre-Renaissance painting to installations by Modern and contemporary artists. Yet far from relying on such riches, the museum constantly strives to offer visitors new perspectives on its holdings.

Top end of the art market is thriving at Art Basel
(11 Jun 2019) LEAD IN :
The world's premier art fair, Art Basel in Basel, has opened after another year of strong growth in the top end art market.
It is the place where the ultra-rich of the world go to pick up works by artists such as Picasso, Miro, Calder and many more.
STORYLINE
It is that time of the year again, when the global art marker descends on the Swiss city Basel for the annual Art Basel fair.
It is a perfect time to look through the looking glass and examine the state of the global contemporary art market.
Prices certainly seem healthy, at least in the top end of the market.
This painting called Woman with Dog by Pablo Picasso, is available for 32 million dollars.
The very top end of the market is growing steadily, according to Clare McAndrew, an art market economist who also writes the annual Art Basel global market report.
Well, the market has done fairly well for the last two years. We have seen two years of consistent growth and it grew last year by about six percent so it has reached about 67-billion so you can see by size alone that it does spark the interest of the kind of mainstream investment community, she says.
At this stage it is a big business. But that is not measuring one aggregate market, it is lots of different markets interacting in different ways. So, some regions have been performing better than others. For example, last year the US performed really well but China contracted.
Some 44 percent of all the art sales were made in the US in 2018, with the UK second on 21 percent and China on 19 percent.
But it is the high end of the market that is driving growth, says McAndrew.
The middle and low end of the market is struggling.
At Art Basel a painting by Joan Miro called Le Vol De L'Oiseau is available for 25 million dollars while an abstract impressionist watercolor painting by Joan Mitchell is selling for 4.8 million dollars.
As long as we can keep fueling the market at the high end with the pieces that people want, then there is always going to be a demand for those because it is driven by scarcity, says McAndrew.
So, everybody is chasing the same very few names at the top end. So, it creates that kind of scarcity and it keeps prices being driven up.
There is a fear of a recession in many countries, and the stock market has slowed down significantly in many countries.
However, financial worries like that doesn't affect the ultra-high end of the art market, says New York based art advisor Todd Levin.
The truth is, if you are worth a billion plus dollars today, and the market corrects by 30 percent, then you are worth three quarters of a billion dollars tomorrow. It is not really going to stymie you too much from going ahead and purchasing works if you so choose too.
One major trend in the global art market is that more and more art collectors are doing their shopping at Art Fairs, like Art Basel.
The share of sales that are made on art fairs have increased from 30 percent in 2010 to 46 percent in 2019.
It is because people just simply don't have time to visit a number of galleries anymore, and they prefer to get all their art purchases done at one show to save time, says Lisa Schiff, a New York based art advisor
Art Basel opened to invited guests and the press on June 11. The show opens to the public on June 13 and runs through June 16.
