Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao. Bilbao, Spain
Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao.
Bilbao, Spain
It is the second largest and most visited museum in the Basque Country and one of the richest Spanish museums outside Madrid. It houses a valuable and quite comprehensive collection of Basque, Spanish and European art from the Middle Ages to contemporary artists, such as Gauguin, Delaunay, Léger, Bacon, Hockney, Alechinsky and Kapoor. Overall, a good museum to visit when you are in Bilbao. The current exhibition of Zuloaga (1870-1945) is astonishing - photography of the current exhibition is not allowed. Enjoy the short video of the permanent collection of the museum.
The Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art Bilbao Spain
My visit to the Guggenheim Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art was extraordinary. The building housing a collection of contemporary art was the most interesting sculpture I've ever seen.
Three stories high, it houses some 20 large galleries under roof. Each gallery has huge pieces, size, which dominate the room. One has ample room to move around and experiencing the artists view of his work. It appears that the particular gallery was customized with the visitor in mind. Altogether, Frank Gehry's design created a spectacular sculpture-like structure, perfectly integrated within Bilbao's urban pattern and its surrounding area.
The exterior is even more exotic. A masterpiece of sculpture is it
covered with almost 30,000 thin titanium plates. The building is so uniquely designed, reflecting a theme of ships, Bilbao was once a shipbuilding and fishing economy, that it attracts more than a million visitors a year.

The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is an art museum located in the city of Bilbao, Spain. The building of the museum is located entirely inside the city's Doña Casilda Iturrizar park. Bilbao Fine Arts Museum is the second largest and most visited museum in the Basque Country, after the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum and one of the richest Spanish museums outside Madrid.
Bilbao Fine Arts Museum houses a valuable and quite comprehensive collection of Basque, Spanish and European art from the Middle Ages to contemporary, including paintings by old masters like El Greco, Cranach, Murillo, Goya, Van Dyck, Ruisdael and Bellotto, together with 19th century and modern: Sorolla, Mary Cassatt, Gauguin, Henri Le Sidaner, James Ensor, Peter Blake and Francis Bacon.
The Museum of Fine Arts in Bilbao was established in 1908. After moving through various venues, the final headquarters were built in 1945, in a great neoclassical building that was to undertake paths expansions in 1970 and 2001 to house the growing museum collection.
The collection of the present Bilbao Fine Arts Museum originated with the merger of the collections from the first Museo de Bellas Artes, inaugurated in 1914, and the Museo de Arte Moderno (Museum of Modern Art) in 1924. In 2008 the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao reached its century under the slogan 100 Years of History, 10 Centuries of Art.
The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum was established in 1908 and opened in 1914, guided by the will to modernize individuals and adapt to the cultural moment that the city lived. Its main objectives was to provide a space which at that time was considered essential in any modern society and provide historical role models to the local arts community that would help to complete and develop their training.

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a museum of modern and contemporary art designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, and located in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was inaugurated on 18 October 1997 by former King Juan Carlos I of Spain. Built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Cantabrian Sea, it is one of several museums belonging to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and features permanent and visiting exhibits of works by Spanish and international artists. It is one of the largest museums in Spain.
One of the most admired works of contemporary architecture, the building has been hailed as a signal moment in the architectural culture, because it represents one of those rare moments when critics, academics, and the general public were all completely united about something. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was the building most frequently named as one of the most important works completed since 1980 in the 2010 World Architecture Survey among architecture experts.
The museum notably houses large-scale, site-specific works and installations by contemporary artists, such as Richard Serra's 100-meter-long (340 ft) Snake, and displays the work of Basque artists, as well as housing a selection of works from the Foundation's modern art collection. In 1997, the museum opened with The Guggenheim Museums and the Art of This Century, a 300-piece overview of 20th-century art from Cubism to new media art. Most pieces came from the Guggenheim's permanent collection, but the museum also acquired paintings by Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko and Clyfford Still and commissioned new works by Francesco Clemente, Anselm Kiefer, Jenny Holzer and Richard Serra.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao was opened as part of a revitalization effort for the city of Bilbao. Almost immediately after its opening, the Guggenheim Bilbao became a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the globe. In its first three years, almost 4 million tourists visited the museum, helping to generate about €500 million in economic activity. The regional council estimated that the money visitors spent on hotels, restaurants, shops and transport allowed it to collect €100 million in taxes, which more than paid for the building cost.

Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain 2016
Bilbao's buildings display a variety of architectural styles, ranging from gothic to contemporary architecture. The Old Town features many of the oldest buildings in the city, as the St. James' Cathedral or the Church of San Antón, included in the borough's coat of arms. Most of the Old Town is a pedestrian zone during the day.
Since the deindustrialization process started in the 1990s, many of the former industrial areas are being transformed into modern public and private spaces designed by several of the world's most renowned architects and artists. The main example is the Guggenheim Museum, located in what was an old dock and wood warehouse. The building, designed by Frank Gehry and inaugurated in October 1997, is considered among architecture experts as one of the most important structures of the last 30 years, and a masterpiece by itself. The museum houses part of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation modern art collection.
