Iowa: Des Moines, The Des Moines Art Center
The Des Moines Art Center is an art museum with an extensive collection of paintings, sculpture, modern art and mixed media. It was established in 1948.
The architecture of the original museum wing was designed in a combination of Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles by Eliel Saarinen in 1945 and completed in 1948.
The second addition, originally intended for large-scale sculpture, was designed in a Modernist style by I.M. Pei in 1966 and completed in 1968. Legend says that Pei designed the south windows, which look out onto the rose garden, to resemble PEI, but he has denied this.
The third wing was designed by Richard Meier and completed in 1985. This wing was designed to allow as much natural ambient light in as possible.
The Des Moines Art Center is free of charge.
There is a special exhibition on Vivian Maier's works. I watched a movie on her life a while back and love her photos. Now I got to see her works in person, what a nice surprise!

★ About Bernie:
Bernie Sanders is a Democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the U.S. Senate after winning re-election in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. Sanders previously served as mayor of Vermont’s largest city for eight years before defeating an incumbent Republican to be the sole congressperson for the state in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lives in Burlington, Vermont with his wife Jane and has four children and seven grandchildren.
Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to immigrant parents and grew up in a small, rent-controlled apartment. His father came to the United States from Poland at the age of 17 without much money or a formal education. While attending the University of Chicago, a 20-year-old Sanders led students in a multi-week sit-in to oppose segregation in off-campus housing owned by the university as a Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) officer. In August of 1963, Sanders took an overnight bus as an organizer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee to hear Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech firsthand at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
After graduation, Bernie moved to Vermont where he worked as a carpenter and documentary filmmaker. In 1981, he was elected as mayor of Burlington as an Independent by a mere 10 votes, shocking the city’s political establishment by defeating a six-term, local machine mayor. In 1983, Bernie was re-elected by a 21 point margin with a record amount of voter turnout. Under his administration, the city made major strides in affordable housing, progressive taxation, environmental protection, child care, women’s rights, youth programs and the arts. In 1990, Sanders was elected to the House of Representatives as the first Independent in 40 years and joined the Democratic caucus. He was re-elected for eight terms, during which he voted against the deregulation of Wall Street, the Patriot Act, and the invasion of Iraq.
In 2006, Sanders defeated the richest man in Vermont to win a seat in the U.S. Senate as an Independent. Known as a “practical and successful legislator,” Sanders served as chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs where he authored and passed the most significant veteran health care reform bill in recent history. While in the Senate, Sanders has fought tirelessly for working class Americans against the influence of big money in politics. In 2010, he gave an eight-and-a-half hour filibuster-like speech on the Senate floor in opposition to extending Bush-era tax breaks for the wealthy. In 2015, the Democratic leadership tapped Bernie to serve as the caucus’ ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee.
Known for his consistency on the issues, Senator Sanders has supported the working class, women, communities of color, and the LGBT community throughout his career. He is an advocate for the environment, unions, and immigrants. He voted against Keystone XL, opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, wants to expand the Voting Rights Act, and pass the Equal Rights Amendment.

The video was created by an Art Center volunteer, Isabelle van Vleuten, using sketch-up. Klingner's Hannah Hillyard created the 3D design in Revit which was imported into Sketch-up. The project is currently in fund-raising.
Ronald Prill Memorial
Ronald Louis Prill, 81, of Fairfield, died peacefully in his sleep Sept. 9, 2013, at Jefferson County Health Center. Ron Prill was born April 15, 1932, in Fairfield, the son of Orville and Elvira Rudi Prill. After her death, Ron's father married Mary Barnes Gunerson. Ron Prill married Betty Lou Bipes on Dec. 18, 1955, in Ottumwa. She died Oct. 12, 2001. Mr. Prill graduated from Fairfield High School in 1950. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Parsons College in 1954 and a Master of Arts degree in music education from State University of Iowa in 1962.
In 1948, Mr. Prill joined the Iowa Army National Guard, 34th Army Band, as enlisted trombonist. He was named the director and company commander of the 34th Army Band in 1972, a post he held for 20 years. He retired from the Iowa Army National Guard in 1992 after 44 years of service. He received many awards, including the Legion of Merit. As a member and later commander of the 34th Army Band, Mr. Prill played a large role in performing summer band concerts in Central Park. When the 34th Army Band could no longer play concerts in the park, Mr. Prill organized the Fairfield Municipal Band in 1987 so summer concerts could continue. Mr. Prill directed the municipal band for a few years; however, even after he stepped down as director, he continued to play with the band until June of this year. In all, Mr. Prill brought music to the community for more than 50 summers.
On July 30, 2013, Fairfield City Mayor Ed Malloy dedicated the bandstand in Central Park to Mr. Prill for his years of dedication to the city of Fairfield. After receiving this award, Mr. Prill directed the municipal band in a march for the last time.
Please click here to see a short video from the bandstand dedication ceremony:
After earning his Bachelor of Arts degree, Mr. Prill taught vocal and instrumental music from 1954-56 at New Sharon Independent School District in New Sharon. In 1956, he accepted a position as elementary music teacher for Fairfield Independent Schools. He was later named music teacher at the new Fairfield Junior High School (now Pence Elementary). When his mentor Dillon Lowell retired in 1972, Ron accepted the position of band director at Fairfield High School, a position he held until his retirement from teaching in 1992.
During his tenure at FHS, Mr. Prill took band students on many trips. Under his supervision, FHS band students were able to perform at International Lions Conventions in Mexico City and Phoenix, Ariz., as well as Disneyland, Disneyworld and Winnipeg, Canada.
In addition to his involvement with the FHS, 34th Army and Fairfield Municipal bands, Mr. Prill played in many small music groups, including church and community bands. He was an original member of the Fairfield Dixieland Band and a member of the Iowa Military Veterans Band and Tarnished Brass Band in Van Buren County. He also sang in the Fairfield Community Chorus.
After his retirement from teaching and the military, Mr. Prill served as the Jefferson County Emergency Management Coordinator for four years. He was a member of the Fairfield Lions Club for more than 50 years. He also was a member of First Lutheran Church ELCA, the Fairfield Concert Association and the Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools.
Mr. Prill served as president of the CALU Apartment Board and the Iowa Bandmaster's Association. He also was editor of the Iowa Bandmaster's Association state magazine for four years. In addition to his lifelong devotion to music, Mr. Prill enjoyed golfing, swimming, biking, boating, waterskiing, camping and creating jewelry art and memory books for his family.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Prill Leathers and spouse Jerry Leathers of Stockport and Linda Prill Mench and spouse R. Michael Mench of Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany; and five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one stepaunt, Elaine Peters.
His parents, his stepmother and his wife preceded him in death. A funeral was held at 10 a.m. Saturday September 14, 2013 at United Methodist Church; Rev. Stacy Grau officiating. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield with military rites by the 34th Army Band, Iowa Army National Guard. Memorials may be made to the Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools for a planned Ron Prill Memorial Scholarship, First Lutheran Church, or Fairfield Concert Association. Cards and memorials can be sent to Linda Prill Mench at Raymond Funeral Home, 112 W. Burlington Ave., Fairfield, Iowa 52556. Arrangements are in the care of the Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.
